Case Study: Design of Pulp Slurry Lines
In-depth structural/mechanical design reduces capital cost
Client: Multinational Paper Manufacturer
Project Background
Tight deadline to commission a second pulp slurry feed tank due to
changes in production
Client proposed to use a redundant adjacent tank of similar size
Client had first-pass design taking a longer piping route at low level but
was unsure of loadings on roof structures and tank agitator nozzle
Important that design took into account all pipe work stress and
structural loads
Valves were free issue from another part of site, redundant plant
Client had no in-house design capability, so must engage a competent
designer

Engineering Scope
Detailed site survey
Draft proposals discussed with client to ensure acceptable
Proceed with general arrangement design
Complete pipe stress calculations in Caesar II
Complete structural calculations in STAAD Pro
Mechanical Designer, Stress Engineer and Structural Engineer work
closely to ensure design satisfies each others’ requirements, involving
some design iteration
Complete isometrics and pipe support drawings
Issue structural and stress calculations
Final design review with client

Summary
Proposed new, shorter, less complex pipe routing
Saved significant capital cost but required more mechanical/structural
calculations particularly for tank roof supports
Completed full site survey, considering every detail and left nothing to
chance
Fully checked out design with stress/structural calculations using the
latest software tools
Produced fully detailed deliverables for construction or purchase,
internally checked and approved
Minimal supervision requirement from client
Completed for lump sum, within budget and timescale
