y Hypertension (HTN) or high blood pressure isa chronic medical condition in which the systemicarterial blood pressureis elevated. It is the oppositeof hypotension. It is classified as either primary (essential) orsecondary. About 9095% of cases are termed "primaryhypertension", which refers to high blood pressure for whichno medical cause can be found. The remaining 510% ofcases (Secondary hypertension) are caused by otherconditions that affect the kidneys, arteries, heart, or

endocrine system.y Persistent hypertension is one of the risk factors

for stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure andarterial aneurysm, and is a leading cause of chronic kidneyfailure. Moderate elevation of arterial blood pressure leads toshortened life expectancy. Dietary and lifestyle changes can

improve blood pressure control and decrease the risk ofassociated health complications, although drug treatmentmay prove necessary in patients for whom lifestyle changesprove ineffective or insufficient.

    Awareness

y The World Health Organization attributes hypertension, orhigh blood pressure, as the leading cause of cardiovascularmortality. The World Hypertension League (WHL), anumbrella organization of 85 national hypertension societies

and leagues, recognized that more than 50% of thehypertensive population worldwide are unaware of theircondition. To address this problem, the WHL initiated aglobal awareness campaign on hypertension in 2005 anddedicated May 17 of each year as World Hypertension Day

(WHD). Over the past three years, more national societieshave been engaging in WHD and have been innovative intheir activities to get the message to the public. In 2007,there was record participation from 47 member countries ofthe WHL. During the week of WHD, all these countries in

partnership with their local governments, professional societies, nongovernmental organizations and private industries promoted hypertension awareness among the public throughseveral media and public rallies. Using mass media suchasInternet and television, the message reached more than 250

million people. As the momentum picks up year after year, theWHL is confident that almost all the estimated 1.5 billion peopleaffected by elevated blood pressure can be reached.

    Circulatory system

The systems involved in giving part to the

development of hypertention is the circulatorysystem.

The circulatory system is a networkthat carries blood throughout the body.

The human circulatory systemsupplies the cells of the body with the food and

oxygen they need to survive. At the same time, itcarries carbon dioxide and other wastes awayfrom the cells. The circulatory system also helpsregulate the temperature of the body and carriessubstances that protect the body from disease. Inaddition, the system transports chemicalsubstances called hormones, which help regulate

the activities of various parts of the body. One ofthe parts of the circulatory system is the heart. Itis a hollow, muscular organ that pumps blood. Itconsists of two pumps that lie side by side. Thesepumps relax when taking in blood and contractas they send out blood. The left side of the heartis a stronger pump than the right side.

  • 8/8/2019 Case Pres in HTN

    29/37

y . The stronger pump receives blood from the lungs and sends it to cellsthroughout the body. The weaker pump receives blood from the cells

throughout the body and sends the blood to the lungs.Another of the parts of the circulatory system are the blood

vessels. They form a complicated system of connecting tubesthroughout the body. There are three major types of these vessels.

Arteries carry blood from the heart. Veins return blood to the heart.

Capillaries are extremely tiny vessels that connect the arteries and theveins. The blood consists chiefly of liquid called plasma, and threekinds of solid particles known as formed elements. Plasma is made upmostly of water, but it also contains proteins, minerals, and othersubstances. The three types of formed elements are called red bloodcells, white blood cells, and platelets.
