We are going to create a three-tier prompt based on: Country > Resort > Service Line Let’s begin by opening the Beach.unv (Island Resort Marketing) universe. Click File > Open, or press <Ctrl-O> Choose the BEACH universe. It should be one of the available universes if you have done a standard installation.

We will be creating our Cascading Prompts for the Island Resort Marketing exampleUniverse. We are going to create a three-tier prompt based on:

Country > Resort > Service Line

Let’s begin by opening the Beach.unv (Island Resort Marketing) universe.Click File > Open, or press <Ctrl-O>

Choose the BEACH universe. It should be one of the available universes if you havedone a standard installation.

We are going to being working our way through the Resort class. Open the Resort classand select the Resort object. Double-Click it to open the Edit Properties Window.

Click on the Check-Box for Automatic refresh before use. This will ensure that the“prompts” are rebuilt at each run. Once this is selected, click on the Edit… button.

Bring the Country object to the Conditions Panel. Once there, we will begin by settingup an “in list” prompt on the possible Country values. Select In List from the availableOperators.

Select Type a new prompt from the available Operands.

I’ve set up my prompt as: “What Country are you interested in?”Since we don’t really want to “populate” this List of Values, click on theSave and Close button.

Back at the Edit Properties window, click on the Apply button. This will change ourList of Values and leave the Edit Properties window open.

Click on the Service Line Object and we should see the Edit Properties window changeto reflect your new selection. If you had closed it, just Double-click on the Service Lineobject. Ensure that the Automatic refresh before use check-box is selected and clickthe Edit… button.

Bring Resort to the Conditions panel.

We will set up this Condition in the same manner. Choose In List from the availableOperators, Type a new prompt from the Operands and then:

“What Resort are you interested in?” for the prompt.

Make sure that you Click on Save and Close.

Click on Apply and then select the Service object.

Again, ensure that the Automatic refresh before use check-box is selected and click onthe Edit… button.

Bring the Service Line over to the Conditions panel. Choose In List from the availableOperators.

Select Type a new prompt from the available Operands.

Enter: “What Service Lines are you interested in?” for the prompt and then Click onSave and Close

Click on the OK button and we are ready to save our revised Universe. We used OKinstead of Apply since we don’t have any further changes to make and can safely closethis Edit Properties window.

Save your Universe by either clicking on the Disk icon or by pressing <Ctrl-S>

Launch BusinessObjects through the Tools Menu: Tools > Run > BusinessObjects

We should be ready to test our new Cascading Prompts. Select Generate a standardreport, and click Begin >

Select Universe as our source and click Next >

Select the Island Resort Marketing universe from the available list and click Finish.

For the Result Objects, select: Country, Service Line and RevenueFor a Condition, bring Service Line to the Conditions and set up a prompt using In Listas the Operator.

Select Type a new prompt and enter: “What Service Lines are we tracking?”Click Run

You should be prompted for Service Line with our prompt. Click on the Values…button.

This is where the fun begins… You will then be prompted for a Resort, so click on theValues… button.

You should be prompted for Country. Once again, click on the Values… button.

This time we are given a List of Values for Country. Now we begin to step “Down”through the Hierarchy, answering our prompts in the correct order.

I selected France and US and then clicked OK.

Click OK and you will be prompted for our next choice.

You should get a List of Values for Resort displayed. Select Bahamas Beach, FrenchRiviera and Hawaiian Club. Then Click OK.

Click on OK

At the List of Values for Service Line, select: Accommodation and Food & Drinks.Once selected, Click OK.

Click OK and our report should run.

If you selected the same prompts, your report should return the following:

If you have any issues getting the Cascading Prompts to work, please feel free tocontact me. At present there is no way to “control” the order in which the promptsappear (to only prompt you in one direction).
