Purpose
• “Survival rates after sudden cardiac arrest decrease approximately 7% to 10% with every minute that defibrillation is delayed.”
(American Heart Association. Circulation 2000.)
• An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) drill is designed for non medical personnel to practice emergency response procedures and to evaluate and improve upon the effectiveness of those procedures.
The Emergency Response Plan for Schools
• This 2004 American Heart Association publication emphasized routine AED practice drills and evaluations in schools.
• Considering the importance and effectiveness of fire drills, the need for routine practice of rescuing a sudden cardiac arrest patient, a life or death situation, is a logical conclusion.
Main Goals for the AED Drills
1. Raise awareness of sudden cardiac death.
2. Know when and where to grab the AED.
3. Understand how to use an AED.
CAS Project Plan
• Submit detailed plan to Administration for final approval.
• Educate Student Body– Further research signs and symptoms of cardiac
arrest to present to students.– Create 5 minute instructional video to show in
each class about the drill and AED locations.– Arrange hands-on AED demos for the students
during lunch.• Recruit trained health professionals.
CAS Project Plan
• Conduct school-wide practice AED drill.• Organize biannual AED drills that coincide
with Michigan School AED weeks in November and February of each year.
• Potential to expand to Clarkston Jr. High and Sashabaw Middle School.
Conclusion
• For successful implementation, this project will require the assistance of other IB students.– This project would include Creativity in the design
process and video. – Service in the area of educating the student body on
how to act when they see someone suddenly collapse.
• This drill is very important to the well-being of the entire Clarkston Community by helping to create the next generation of life-savers.
