T his year marks our 68th anniversary in the Ceramic Arts industry, and we couldn’t be more excited for another year full of new ideas, new ventures and new paths to creativity.
I know that our founder, my grandmother Erma Duncan – a talented artist, ceramic arts educator and businesswoman – would be proud of the direction this company is heading in, as we continually operate under the notion of embracing constant change, improvement and innovation; an idea that serves as one of our core guiding principles.
And as part of our commitment to constant change, improvement and innovation, we’ve decided to create a more focused, specialized experience to meet your individual needs by offering two Duncan® Selection Guides instead of one; this guide is focused specifically on all Duncan® Ceramic Arts color lines and brushes for their application, while the other features Duncan® Oh Four® Bisque and specialized color lines with Paint Your Own Pottery Studio appeal. Make sure to look for the new Duncan® Design Selection Guide in the fall.
I am also proud to announce that our dedication to our mission of making it easy to experience creativity for people of all ages, skill levels and style preferences has led to another year of growth for our Duncan® Ceramic Arts division. We plan to expand on that growth with another year of investment in our ceramic arts business as we reach out to new markets and continue to develop a variety of innovative color lines that meet your artistic needs – all supported by an industry-leading global distribution network.
As you know, iLoveToCreate®, a Duncan Enterprises Company, is home to a variety of brands, but we wouldn’t be who we are today without the solid foundation of our Duncan® brand and its commitment to consistent, superior-quality ceramic arts products. I hope you share my enthusiasm in the coming year as we move full speed ahead toward new opportunities and adventures in the ceramic arts industry.
Most importantly, I humbly thank you for your continued support and invaluable contributions to the Duncan® Ceramic Arts brand.

style and unrivaled talent and have pieces featured throughout this color selection guide.
David HoffDavid Hoff has more than 50 years of experience in the ceramic arts industry, including time spent as a hobbyist, home studio owner, large storefront, distributor, independent traveling instructor and 30-year educational consultant for Duncan Enterprises. He has been a full participant in the development of the ceramic arts industry throughout his career and continues to work with iLoveToCreate®, a Duncan Enterprises Company, as well as a writer for Fired Arts Magazine.
David is currently a traveling fired arts educator and consultant for several companies, including iLoveToCreate® and other contemporary and traditional studios, using his extensive product knowledge to assist consumers.
He also teaches specialized classes in his home studio in Fresno, California.
Michele ZulimMichele Zulim has created fired art for more than 35 years, specializing in clay and ceramics along with porcelain, stoneware and glass. Michele loves a challenge and didn't skip a beat when asked to create a mosaic drum set for iLoveToCreate®.
Michele currently owns and runs Watermarks Mosaics, creating mosaics for swimming pools and other surfaces using Duncan® fired products.
Kathy Cano-MurilloAuthor and artist, Kathy Cano-Murillo is the founder of the award-winning website, CraftyChica.com. She has been making, selling and teaching her "Chicano Pop Art" crafts since 1990. Her handmade pieces have been carried by large chains such as Target, Bloomingdales and Hallmark, as well as hundreds of indie boutiques across the country. Kathy also has her own craft product line through iLoveToCreate® and has been featured in The New York Times, USA Today and on Lifetime TV, HGTV and the DIY Network.
Kathy began dabbling in painting ceramic bisque a few years ago when she began her gig at iLoveToCreate®. She started by painting a mug here and there and thoroughly enjoyed it! She loved finishing her project and then counting down the hours while the kiln worked its magic! Soon mugs became platters, pie plates, you name it, Kathy now LOVES to unleash her creativity on almost anything bisque.
A former newspaper craft columnist for the The Arizona Republic, Kathy has authored seven craft books and she is currently writing her third novel and designing a new giftware line. She lives with her husband, two kids and five Chihuahuas.
Suzie ShinsekiSuzie works as a Senior Designer at iLoveToCreate®. She has been involved with art since childhood, and her passion has continued throughout her life. She honed her natural talents by attending the Academy of Arts in San Francisco on scholarship, art classes at San Jose City College and the rest of her experience at the School of Hard Knocks.
She works with various media and substrates. You can find her masterpieces on painted signs, murals, people and animal portraiture, mold design, sculptures, ceramic projects and fabric paint designs. Her commercial endeavors include children’s coloring books, illustrative designs for bags, brochures and cards. Her exceptional illustration skills have brought her many jobs as a fashion illustrator for designers in Hong Kong and Hawaii.
“What’s my wackiest project? A 5-foot snake for part of a project with Adam and Eve wearables and turning a purse into a dress. I’m always up for a challenge, but that one was particularly wacky!”
Laura FraedrichLaura is a Regional Account Manager at iLoveToCreate® for the Duncan® Brand of bisque and fired color. She is also the founder of The Peculiar Palette, a blog and website about mixedmedia art and ceramics, where she writes about her recent creative endeavor ‘52 Weeks of Art Plates’.
Laura resides in Fresno, CA with her menagerie of pets, which inspire much of her work.
Arlene SmithArlene’s credits her mother for getting her “hooked” on ceramics at the ripe old age of nine! At the age of ten she made a porcelain laced draped doll, which she still has and cherishes today.
In 1992 she became a Duncan Certified Teacher and together with her husband opened Arlene Smith’s Classy Ceramics. In 1995 she became a Duncan Ambassador giving her the opportunity to meet many wonderful people, visit some great places and she hopes leave an everlasting impression of her love for the ceramic industry.
After closing her ceramics studio in 2003, she decided to focus on her true love of teaching ceramics, which she finds extremely rewarding. “It is a great moment to see the expression of amazement, pride and accomplishment on students’ faces when they see their finished pieces. I always have two objectives when I teach. One is to ensure that the student is learning and the second is to make sure they have fun while learning,” she says.
Arlene has traveled throughout the USA, Canada, England and Australia teaching ceramics. She also has been a guest speaker and/or instructor at many ceramic events.

Each Duncan® product label is much more than just a pretty front on a fine product. Our labels are carefully designed to provide you with convenient information about the use of our products.
Color number and nameEach color has an individual color
number and name. Duncan® places colors in color-wheel sequence
on our color charts to make it as convenient as possible for you to pick just the right color tone, tint or shade. Normally, you'll find each color placed
in numerical order on your dealer's shelves. After you have selected the
color you want, find its color number and you'll locate it easily.
Overglaze compatibleThe use of an overglaze can really enhance the quality of a finished piece, but because some glazes contain small amounts of copper for color, they will not
work with overglazes. Duncan® glazes are all identified as to whether they will or will not work with overglazes. Glazes that will work with overglazes state
OVERGLAZE COMPATIBLE. Glazes that do not work with overglazes will not include this statement.
Nontoxic symbolAll Duncan® products carry a nontoxic symbol that certifies our products are in compliance with the Consumer Products Safety Commission's safety requirements.

Food SafetyLabel will indicate if the glaze is safe for use on food containers.

Which process is best for me? Clear Dipping Glazes save time when glazing a high volume of projects and makes glazing large pieces fast and easy.
Clear Brush-On Glazes offer a hands-on personal approach to glazing and excellent control of application.

brush on – step-by-step
1. Mix in Pail Mix with electric mixer for no more than two minutes until you see a vortex. Avoid touching edges of pail with the mixing blade. Use a stainless steel wire whisk to stir glaze after initial mixing.
2. Check Viscosity a.SubmergeaTL497ViscosityCupintotankandfillwithglaze. As you lift cup from glaze, begin timing. b. Stop timing when the steady stream of glaze begins to break. A range of 19-24 seconds is normal. Add small amounts of water as needed to thin.

3A. Dipping with Hands a. Wearing protective gloves, use a smooth casual motion to submerge cone 04 bisque in glaze, covering approximately 90% of piece. Quickly lift ware out of glaze. Shake off ware to remove excess glaze and achieve uniform application. Let dry. b. Using same motion, dip unglazed portion, slightly overlapping glazed area for full coverage. Let dry.
3B. Dipping with Tongs a. Gently grasp cone 04 bisque with tongs and submerge in glaze covering entire piece. b. Quickly lift ware out of glaze. Shake ware to remove excess and achieve uniform application. Let dry.
4. Touch Up After ware is dry, use an SB 807 Fan Glaze brush to touch up tong marks or any missed areas with glaze. Use a TL 420 Palette Knife to shave off drips or runs to prevent airborne dust.

Duncan® Artisan Glazes™ can be layered with Concepts® Underglazes for Bisque to create endless

this stunning project using Duncan® Artisan Glazes™ combined with Duncan® Concepts® Underglazes for Bisque.
WHAT IS RAKU?Raku pottery originated in Japan. Raku, meaning "pleasure" or "enjoyment", was not introduced to the western world until the first half of the 20th century. Raku is a process of taking pots, while they are still glowing red from the kiln, and placing them immediately into containers filled with combustible materials such as sawdust, dried leaves, newspaper, etc. A reduction or carbonization process begins once the red hot pots ignite the combustible materials and create smoke and soot causing a beautiful reaction to all glazed areas. Raku techniques have been modified by contemporary potters worldwide.
Many Duncan® Glazes and Underglazes can be used in a raku atmosphere. Here is a list of just some of the Duncan products that can yield some very interesting and beautiful results!
