High school art students created their own paper in Mrs. Piro’s classes. Their examples were on display in the commons at the high school. Remember to check those display cases. We have some

very talented students at Riverside.

NOTICE TO PARENTS:

Parents,

Soon I will be sending out a notice with your children addressed to you that will talk about the Artsonia.com website. Artsonia.com is a website to post students work online for free. Then you can go online and view your child's work and post comments. You will also be able to go online to buy your child’s artwork printed on certain items, such as mugs, t-shirts, mouse pads and more. All money earned will go towards the Riverside art depart-ment. Artsonia.com is a very secure website that was created for the purpose of posting

student work and I know many art teachers who use the website.

Before any artwork can be posted, I must receive approval from you to post your child’s artwork. The process of approval will be explained in the notice I send home with your

child. Once students finish their first art project, I will be sending notices home.

If you wish to visit the website here is the address: http://www.artsonia.com/

If you have any questions please feel free to email me at: [email protected].

Middle School Student Council

The middle school has elected its 2012-2013 student council members. The members are: 5th grade-Jacob Erickson, Kristian Martens, Gracelynn Bluml, Paige Osweiler, 6th grade-Bailey Holub, Valentin Andrusyshyn, Rhyan Sanney, Lydia Weide, 7th grade-Mick Clevenger, Jacey Kallsen, John Baker, Jamie Hackett, 8th grade-Dean Hansen, Chris Gaynor, Ana Andrusyshyn, Alex Martinez. The group’s first activity will be a retreat Monday, September 10th from 5:30-6:45. Congratulations to this fine group of

students.

Students from Riverside High School were among the over 80,000 students across the country who participated in the 2012 National Financial Capability Challenge organized by the U.S. Departments of the Treasury and Education. 13 of our students were recognized as being among the top 20% of all students taking the voluntary online exam nationally, which represents 40% of the stu-

dents who took the exam at Riverside scoring in the top 20% of the nation!

I’m hoping you’ll help us recognize the following highest achieving students: Kevin Collins, Dannielle Easton, Jacie Feigenbutz, Brea Fender, RJ Griger, John Gunderson, Clay Harris, Mack Housman, Samantha Keast, Alexander McLaugh-lin, Joshua Mills, Marissa Rose, and Elisabeth Seifert. Additionally, students who scored in the top 10% of the nation were given special recognition, and two students from Riverside achieved this honor: Jacie Feigenbutz and Alexander

McLaughlin

At Riverside, we know that financial education is important. Too few students graduate with the knowledge and skills they need to make basic financial deci-sions for themselves, their families, and their communities. I am very glad that

we were able to participate in this program.

Additionally, as part of the National Financial Capability Challenge, students as well as school districts were eligible for a drawing for scholarship money and prizes. Riverside was fortunate enough to receive a $1,000 cash prize from Iowa Student Loan, in coordination with the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Jump$tart, Junior Achievement of Central Iowa, and the Iowa College Access Network. Schools that had at least one student who scored in the top 20% of the Challenge were entered into a drawing for one of 30 cash prizes of $1,000. The money should be used for scholarship funding as well as improving

and continuing financial literacy education at Riverside.

This has been a great opportunity for financial literacy education for our dis-trict as well as students across the nation. I truly hope that you will help us in

recognizing Riverside’s students as well as the monetary prize we received.

Mandie Reynolds is a social studies teacher at Riverside High School and Middle

School.

Congrats, Riverside students and Mrs. Reynolds.

Dr. Sutton accepts plaque from Mrs. Reynolds that recognizes Riverside’s

success in the 2012 National Financial Capability Challenge.

Another College Class at Riverside

Riverside High School is proud to announce that another class is being offered for dual credit this year. The Exploring Teaching class, which is taught by Mrs. Putnam, has been offered as an elective for the past several years and is designed for juniors and seniors who are considering the field of education. Students who successfully complete the class this year will receive three college credits from College of Saint Mary and two Riverside credits. As in the past, the students will be doing numerous field experiences in classrooms throughout the

district. The students are very excited about the class being offered for college credit, and they didn’t even have to buy a textbook!

Take Precautions Against West Nile Virus

West Nile virus is a seasonal threat especially in late August or early September. Iowans should take the

following steps to reduce the risk of exposure to West Nile virus:

Use insect repellant whenever outdoors, especially during peak biting times from dusk to dawn.

Use repellent with DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Always read the repellent label

and consult with a health care provider if you have questions when using these types of products on

children. For example, DEET should not be used on infants less than 2 months old and oil of lemon

eucalyptus should not be used on children under 3 years old.· Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes, and socks

whenever possible outdoors.

Eliminate mosquito-breeding sites by removing sources of standing water in outdoor areas

wherever possible. For example, you may turn over or remove items where water can collect, such as

ceramic pots, toys, buckets, tires, and wading pools. Using tarps to cover firewood and boats is another

example of eliminating pools of standing water.

Cool on the Hill

Please remember to have your elementary child wear or bring warm clothing, a jacket, hat and gloves to school each day.

The weather may change during the day as it did last week.

Middle School Science

The 8th grade science classes have been studying how farms, homes, and businesses affect fresh water and ground water quality. On Wednesday, September 5, we had Mary Skopec from the Iowa DNR in Iowa City come to our classroom and speak to us on this subject. The students were given the opportunity to perform some water quality tests on 4 different samples of water. The tests that were performed check pH, nitrates, and phosphorus levels. The students also had an opportunity in class to check ammonia and dissolved oxygen levels from a farm pond located near Macedonia. Lastly, the class did some computer research on this topic. During our research we looked at and discussed many ways in which high levels of the

above mentioned things might affect life in or around a fresh water source such as a pond or a river. Our next adventure will take a look at the quality of water that we use daily to do

lau ndry, shower, and drink. This will probably lead to some interesting discussions.

New Look for Middle School

"The Riverside Middle School gets an upgrade", one student said as he came out the door on Friday. The old shrubs have been removed and new landscaping has begun,

Sue Jones, from Carson, has done a great job designing an education garden for our students. All the plants are native to our area. Mr. Ehler's and Mr. Bluml's Science classes placed mulch

and will be making ID tags for the plants and learning about the type of plants that are planted.

Jana Hensley, AEA School Interventionist

During the month of October students, schools, and

communities across the nation unite to raise awareness

of bullying prevention. Below are tips to help parents

prevent bullying.

Parents and guardians are among a school's best allies in bullying preven-

tion:

*Talk with and Listen to Your Children Everyday Ask questions about their school day, including experiences on the way to and from school, lunch, and recess. Ask about their peers. Children who feel comfortable talking to their parents about these matters before they are involved in

bullying are more likely to get them involved after.

*Be a Good Example When you get angry at waiters, other drivers or others, model effective communication techniques. As Education.com puts it, "Any time you speak to another person in a mean or abusive way,

you're teaching your child that bullying is ok."

*Create Healthy Anti-Bullying Habits Starting as young as possible, coach your children on both what not to do (push, tease, and be mean to others) as well as what to do (be kind, empathize, and take turns). Also

coach

your child on what to do if someone is mean to him or to another (get

an adult, tell the bully to stop, walk away and ignore the bully).

*Make Sure Your Child Understands Bullying Explicitly explain what it is and that it's not normal or tolerable for them to bully, be bullied, or

stand by and watch other kids be bullied.

(These tips were adapted from materials by the National PTA(10) and

education.com)

The Bully Show

The Rose Theater performed The Bully Show for Riverside Middle School students on September 14. It was about a fictional

game show, You Wanna Be a Bully!

Students got to act as the studio audience and contestants. The show gave new insight to students’ ideas about bullies, victims, and spectators. Students then had an opportunity to share their learning and

do activities in advisory.

Punt, Pass, and Kick Results

As a culmination of the football unit at Riverside Middle School, the middle school students participated in a punt, pass and kick competition. Each student got two attempts at each part of the competition. The winners were determined by adding the total feet of the three skills. These students were recognized at the varsity football game Friday, September 21. 5th grade winners: Boys-1st Kristian Martens 2nd Taten Williams Girls-1st Meghan Reed 2nd Courtney Hering 6th grade winners: Boys-1st Hunter Hodges 2nd Kyle Shenefield Girls-1st Rhyan Sanny 2nd Alexis Post 7th grade winners: Boys-1st-Mick Clevenger 2nd-Andy Casson Girls-1st-Bailey Rose 2nd Austin Corbin 8th grade winner: Boys-Andrew DeShong 2nd Keyton

What’s new at the Elementary

The Riverside Elementary students have started using their new Pedometers in PE class. Pedometers measure the number of steps a person takes. Coach Swenson's Goal for students is to reach 1,000 to 2,000 steps per class, with a Challenge Goal of 3,000 steps for those who want to go above and

beyond.

Students have been taught that 3,000 steps or more, per day, can lead to good health and fitness. The pedometers are a great way for students to track their effort and hold themselves accountable for their own fitness level. "Learning accountability for one's health is a lifelong skill they will need to use as they grow and make choices," says Coach

Swenson.

Needless to say, students are greatly enjoy-ing seeing their progress and challeng-

ing themselves!!!

Hayden Hensley checks his pedometer.

Mr. Meek’s News:

If there is one thing that I can point to that helps students across academics or behaviors, it is communication between families and the teaching staff. The more the families are informed about a student’s school activities, the more successful and productive he/she will be in school. The more information the teaching staff knows about a student’s after-school activities and home activities, the more the teacher can make a connection with a student and use that information to help them be productive in school. Please take the time and talk with your student’s teachers on a regular

basis about what is going on at school and home.

Elementary School You may have heard through conversations with the teaching staff or maybe seen on your child’s paper a change to our grading system at the elementary school. About five years ago, Iowa changed over to a standards-based curriculum and each grade level

has each academic area broken down into specific standards and benchmarks which we call the Iowa Core. With those new standards and benchmarks, there were some changes about what is taught at each grade level. Some standards have moved to a different grade and some standards have been added to ensure that all students in a particular grade level are taught the same items in every Iowa school district. With these new standards and benchmarks, a new way to report out a student’s progress on these bench-marks was necessary. We call this new way to tell you how your child is doing in their particular grade level, a standards-based report card. These report cards now break down academics into specific benchmarks that we will be reporting out quarterly to families. We are also no longer using A, B, C, D, or F on our standards based report cards. Student will be receiving an E for exceeding the standards, an S for satisfying the standards, a P for progressing toward the standards, or an N for not meeting the standards. We will be rolling out these new report cards for the first quarter and our first parent-teacher conferences. Prior to parent-teacher conferences, we will be sending a letter to each family with more details and there will be a night where we will present our new Standards-Based Report Cards and have some time for families to ask questions. Middle School Referring back to the top part of this article, the middle school this year is focusing on communication to and from school. We have spent the first part of our year talking a little about different forms of communi-cation, positive and negative. If there is one thing that we would like to be able to do is find an easy way to contact a student’s family on a regular basis about student academic progress and behaviors. We have found that email is one of those ways that works for the teachers and most families. If your email address has changed recently, please let the office know right away so that we can update it in our system. The same goes for phone numbers. When we have the most current communication information, the better we can get in touch with you when we need to. If there is one thing that I see that happens at the middle school more than at the elementary school is that families come to me first when they have an issue, without having ever talked to their child’s teacher first. I will tell you that a student’s teacher has more and better information regarding a student than I do. If I have to talk to a student about anything, I generally call home after the conversation, especially if it related to discipline. I will tell you to start with the teachers first, then if you are not able to find out the informa-tion you need or they were not sure about the situation, then contact me. As always feel free to contact me with any issue via email or phone. If I am not in the building you are calling, the secretaries are great about taking a message and getting it to me or giving you the information

for the other school.

Mrs. Bertacini's Kindergarten class have been working very hard since the begin-ning of the year. One skill they have been introduced to is the art of working as a table group. Here the students are sorting shapes and sharing the objects

with the other students at their table. It is fun working with different friends

in the room.

PARENTS, Check This Out. . .

The following student story is submitted by Mrs. Julie Ravelin, 2nd Grade teacher

The Food Fight

By: Bowe Branan

Once there lived a principal. He was in his office typing on his computer. Lori brought him

his lunch and then the phone rang. Ring! Ring! Lori dropped the tray on the principal, and

then she said, “Sorry!” As fast as she could she ran over to the phone. The principal was

mad. He picked up a hotdog from his lunch and threw the hotdog at Lori. Then they started

a food fight, and someone yelled, “Food fight!” And they started to throw food everywhere.

They went to other classrooms and threw food at the teachers. They stopped when a kid

said, “Stop!” And they had a happy life.

Gute News by David Gute, Riverside High School

We are well underway for the start of the school year and quickly approaching Parent/Teacher conferences. I would like to encourage all parents in every building to come in and visit with your child’s teachers. I know we struggle to get parent participation at the high school level. I feel it is

very important to understand what the curriculum is that the children are learn-ing and how your individual child is progressing towards what the teacher is trying to get them to learn. There are many other great conversations that can also take place during this time. I think you should probably only believe half of the story your child comes home with from something that happened at school that may seem a little controversial on your child’s part. You should try and get the school’s side as well. Conferences can provide the opportunity to get the school’s side of the story. Please attend Parent Teacher Conferences if you are

able on October 22nd or October 25th from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M.

I was also asked to urge students, parents and spectators to pick up after them-selves when we have home events. You would be surprised at the mess that is left behind after games. We have hired an outside company to do our janitorial services this year and the bigger the mess left behind the more money we have to spend. If spectators can pick up their own trash after games, they are actually saving the district money and as school budgets go, we need to always be looking at ways to save. Thank you!

Latest District News: Dr. James Sutton, Superintendent

It’s been a great start to the school year. I’m holding off on reporting enrollment numbers

this year until they become official, but it’s great to have the students back and everything

up and running well. I’ll key in on enrollment and our district’s financial picture next month.

Plus, it appears that the last of the hot weather is behind us. Here are a few updates for one

and all.

Make-over at the Middle School

This year the middle school is looking a bit more colorful than in the past. Thanks to Sue

Jones, Tami Skank and a host of helpers and donors, the shrubs that surrounded the

entry way were pulled and replaced with rocks, mulch and a variety of plants. The change

looks great, and students got into the act as well. If you get a chance, drive by and appreciate

the change. Many of the plants even come with their own label (thanks to our students and

teachers).

Asbestos removal at Middle School completed

The middle school has also been undergoing a somewhat small renovation project below

the gym. A handicapped shower facility was among the required improvements to our

buildings, and that is close to completion It involved the removal of asbestos tile which was

a weekend project the company that got the bid.

FFA/Vo Ag corn crop

It probably wasn’t the best year to jump into the farming business, but I suppose that’s a life

lesson as well. In spite of the dry, hot summer, the FFA/VoAg program will be harvesting

a corn crop this fall. Mr. Rhoten and the students have been keeping a watchful eye on the

progress of the crop and doing some tests to estimate yields. It’s been a terrific learning

opportunity for the students, and I am among the growing number of people that are

anxiously awaiting harvest.

New radio requirement in school buses

We, as well as all other Iowa schools, are required to have new bus radios by January

1st, 2013. This has been something we’ve been working on for over a year in the hopes

of finding some grant money to assist us with this project as it appears it will cost (for

Riverside) somewhere in the neighborhood of $17,000. The new radios are required so that

they use less “air space” than our current radios. The Pottawattamie County Emergency services have been working with us and other area schools to try and come up with the best and most cost

effective solution. Our thanks to them for that.

Architects visiting

The DLR Architectural firm have been working with the Riverside Board of Education as well as visiting with staff and a board-appointed committee to continue to investigate options regarding

possible new facilities. The committee will be meeting a second time on September 26th at

the middle school. Approximately 20 community people met a couple of weeks earlier and

discussed, among other things, the report submitted by the Suggestion Review Committee. The report back to the board with their recommendation. A bond election could be held in

December or wait until a later date if the committee recommends it and the Riverside Board of Education agrees. An election can only be scheduled if a petition is presented to the board with the

appropriate number of signatures.

Riverside daycare and paid preschool update

In a previous newsletter, I reported that Riverside’s daycare was in danger of “going under”.

I’m happy to report that it appears that they may have turned the corner. In the latest report

to the board, the financial report for August showed that the daycare made a very modest

profit. Some other staffing changes that are taking place will allow the daycare to increase

that profit in the near future and give this program the financial cushion they need to stay

healthy. Thanks to all who put in some hard work to keep this very important program alive

and well.

OCTOBER 2012 NEWSLET TER Chris Hamilton: IT Tips:

This is Chris Hamilton and as most of you probably know, I have taken over the IT duties at Riverside. If you have questions or problems on the networking or hard-ware side of things, you should come to me. I thought that this month’s newsletter would be a good time for me to give you some tips for solving computer your problems. These tips are just a few of that things that I think could save you time

and frustration.

The most common problem students and teachers have had so far is: "I can't log on." Check the top right corner of your computer to see if your wireless light is on or disabled. Next double check to make sure caps lock isn't on when you are typing your password. I know this sounds silly, but 9 out of 10 times one of these

will fix the issue.

Next, I get the question: "My website won't work." Sometimes websites are down or have other bugs. However, many times they have not been set up for your browser. Only 16% of people still use Internet Explorer, while 33% use Firefox, and 44% use Chrome. Therefore, many web developers today don't bother to fix bugs on their sites for all browsers. If you are having trouble with a specific site, try using a new browser. The support folder at school has the

Chrome and Firefox installation files.

Finally, I always hear: "I can't print." Simply clicking the print icon isn't always the best idea. That usually just prints to your default printer and who knows what that might be. Always go to File > Print so that you can select which printer you want. If you choose the right one and it still doesn't work, check to see if the printer has any error messages. If you don't see the printer you need at first, you can easily download the drivers for it. Just go to HSSE, MSPrime, or HSPrime and double-click the printer you want. News from the High School Counselor:

This semester 45 Riverside Juniors and Seniors are taking on-line dual enrollment college classes through Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon, IA. Dual Enrollment classes fulfill both high school and college credit requirements at minimal cost to the students. The students are taking a total of 16 classes which include classes such as Speech, Early World History, College Algebra, Medi-cal Terminology, and Intro. to Sociology. We are also offering in house by our own faculty four classes that will offer Iowa Western Community College credit and one class that is offering College of St. Mary’s credit. If all these students were to go to the University of Iowa, they would be saving over $10,000 in tuition cost! If you are interested in more information about your child possibly taking dual enrollment classes, please contact Mr. Conover or Mrs. Hildebrand in the high school

guidance office.

On September 25th, all Riverside Juniors and interested Seniors attended the Atlantic College Fair at Atlantic High School. There were over 65 post-secondary institutions that were represented at the fair. Mrs. Hardy and Miss. Sturm incorporated the college fair into a careers activity in their English classes the week before the fair to help the Juniors prepare for their first college experience. All Juniors are encouraged to make at least 2- 3 college visits during the 2 in either April or June for the first time. If you have any questions about the ACT or college selection process, please contact Mr.

Conover.

Dear Patrons: The Riverside Fifth Grade Band is under way and learning the very beginning skills of playing their instruments. Unfortunately this economy has made it a challenge for some to involve their student in the program. It is our hope that some in the community may have an old horn at home and could see their way clear to donate it to the school's band program. The school can make an official letter of donation for income tax deductions and would be happy to supply one for any benefactor who could donate their instrument. All donated horns are used for those who have trouble in securing a horn and also serve as back-up instruments in repair times. Your generosity is and will be much appreciated. Thank you for all your support! Respectfully, Randy Washburn

Riverside Cheerleaders Attend Camps

In June, the Riverside Football Cheerleaders and the A-H-S-T cheerleaders held their annual private cheer camp with The

National Cheer Association. The girls learned new cheers and chants and worked on their jumps and stunts.

Several of our Riverside Football Cheerleaders were awarded individual awards both days of camp. Kennedy Lucas and Ashlie Wagner each got an award for their high jump techniques, and Hannah Hummel got awards for her sharp motions and proper stunting techniques. Those same 3 cheerleaders were nominated by the NCA for the All-American Cheer Squad. Our

whole cheer squad got 4 Superior and Excellent ribbons for their chants, cheer, and motion techniques.

It was noted by the National Cheerleading Association that the Riverside Football Cheer Squad exemplifies the qualities of

leadership, values, and teamwork. Way to go Riverside Football Cheerleaders!!!!!
