3.1 Front designAs a new entry-level model into the world of cabriolets from Mercedes-Benz, the C-
Class Cabriolet, too, consequently embodies the core of the Mercedes-Benz design
philosophy: Sensuous clarity as a definition of modern luxury. Here, it demonstrates
its own character with a visibly sporty design joined by its youthful and fresh charis‐
ma. With a closed soft top, the two-door cabriolet with its almost identical basic di‐
mensions has a similar silhouette to the C-Class coupe: With its striking front section
with diamond radiator grille, LED high-performance headlamps, long engine hood and
high belt line. The tautly stretched soft top with glass pane flows harmoniously into
the independently designed rear end, which has an extremely sporty appearance on
account of its wide shoulders and flattened LED taillamps.

3.2 Side designAs with the coupe, the cabriolet comes with a low-lying greenhouse. It has a dynamic
side line, frameless doors, no B-pillar and fully retractable side windows. The chrome
trim frame on the A-pillar and windshield gives the cabriolet an extremely high-value
and luxurious appearance. The automatic draft stop AIRCAP® is integrated inconspic‐
uously into the frame of the windshield and it is fully retractable.

3.3 Rear designThe cabriolet has an independent rear-end design including the trunk lid. It has a
strong lateral curvature in the area of the longitudinal member and an extremely spor‐
ty expression through the broad shoulders. The full LED rear lamps are two-piece and
have a high-quality visual appearance. Form and function blend here to form a perfect
entity. The reduced, narrow height of the lamps is achieved in a manner similar to that
for the C205 by moving the reflectors into the bumpers. The characteristic design pro‐
vides a high recognition factor even at night. The Mercedes star is located between
the rear lamps. The specified center high-mounted brake lamp is located in the center
of the soft top compartment lid, and perfectly integrated into the chrome trim. The
reflectors are mounted separately above the diffuser at the side lower area of the
bumper.

4.2.1 Soft top mechanism
TT_77_33_046381_FA
The soft top canvas is tensioned during the closing procedure by means of a driven
tensioning arm. This means that the soft top compartment lid does not need to pro‐
vide any tensioning force when closing.
The rear window was designed to achieve the best possible visibility to the rear. The
heated rear window made of glass is firmly integrated into the soft top canvas and it is
stored in a controlled manner through the soft top kinematics. The rear window is
firmly attached to the soft top canvas by means of a polyurethane encapsulation. The
inner headliner is fastened all the way round to the rear window.
Soft top drive
Six hydraulic cylinders drive the soft top after the lock on the left and right is opened
by a centrally installed electric drive.
The hydraulic unit is located in the side of the trunk floor on the left.

The movements are monitored by 12 limit switches (sensors) that operate contact‐
lessly. Before a function is initiated during an opening/closing sequence, the control
system checks whether the corresponding input signals of the limit switches are
present. If a signal as a prerequisite for a function to be executed is not present, the
soft top stops or does not even start the movement.
Additional signals that are not directly related to the roof sequence are recorded and
also taken into account.
The following signals are monitored for example and used as function requirements:
• Circuit 15 upon actuation via the button in the center console
• Speed signal (less than 50 km/h)
• The actuation of the brake when the vehicle is stationary
• Trunk lid closed
• Remaining luggage compartment partition closed
The rear control unit (soft top) N22/6 actuates additional functions along with the
soft top. These include the following actuations:
• Rear side windows
• Belt extenders
• AIRCAP function
The rear control unit (soft top) N22/6 is located in the trunk on the left behind the
side trim.

4.4.2 AIRSCARF (403)
TT_91_30_046034_FA P_00_00_266706_FA
Head restraint with air outlet AIRSCARF (CODE 403) R22/5, 6 heating elements for AIRSCARF in left/rightfront seatM4/10, 11 fan motors for AIRSCARF left/right front seat
This head area heating makes top-down driving great fun even when outside tempera‐
tures are low. Air outlets in the head restraints place a pleasantly warm airstream like
an invisible scarf around the throat and neck area of the driver and front passenger.
The air to be heated flows over heating slats that are heated up by a PTC heater boos‐
ter (PTC: Positive Temperature Coefficient). Ventilators then ensure that the required
outflow speed is provided.
The warm air comes out of an opening below the respective head restraint. The AIR‐
SCARF function is controlled by the AIRSCARF control unit N25/7 depending on the
following variables:
• Selected heating level
• Outside temperature
• Soft top status
• Vehicle speed
The AIRSCARF function is operated using the AIRSCARF switch in the corresponding
switch group, seat adjustment (initial status is AIRSCARF deactivated, all LEDs OFF):
• Press once:
– 3 LEDs light up, Stage 3 activated (100 %)
• Press twice:
– 2 LEDs light up, Stage 2 activated (66 %)
• Press three times:
– 1 LED lights up, Stage 1 activated (P33 %)
4 Cabriolet
4.4 AIRCAP and AIRSCARF
20 T1477E <> Participant Document
• Press four times:
– All LEDs off, AIRSCARF switched off
The switching on of the fan motors is delayed for approx. 7 s. This prevents any cold
air from flowing out immediately after activation.
To ensure that the fan motors start up reliably, they are actuated independently of the
selected heating level for approx. 0.5 s at maximum voltage.
When switched off, the fan motors run on to protect the heating elements against
overheating. This is done for approx. 5 s in the lowest blower setting.
The fan motors and the heating elements are actuated to match the selected heating
level. The rotational speed of the fan motors is also controlled for an opened soft top
depending on the vehicle speed and the outside temperature.

8 Body
8.1 BodyThe C-Class cabriolet (A205) is based on the MRA platform (Mercedes-Rear-Wheel-
Drive Architecture). This shows the comparison to the C205. Modifications to the ve‐
hicle shell are compensating for the missing connection between the B-pillar and the
roof frame assembly here.
The properties listed below must also be ensured in the convertible (A205):
• Durability
• Crash resistance
• Torsional stiffness
• Vibration characteristics
To achieve values comparable with the sedan or the coupe, the Cabriolet has had
modifications made to its body shell.
Floor assembly of convertible vs. coupe TT_00_00_046113_FA
The main floor has been taken over from the sedan. The modifications of the floor as‐
sembly are shown in the picture. The floor assembly of the sedan as a basis is light
gray (W205). To the left in the picture, in a darker color, you can see the modification
scopes on the convertible (A205). To the right in the picture, in a darker color, you can
see the coupe-specific (C205) components.
