Out of Control! Maybe it’s not you but everything around you that seems to be going crazy. Is the world you live in feeling foreign, like you were abducted and dropped in an alternate universe? The people look normal, but something has changed. You don’t fit anymore. When you retreat, there is some sense of safety and serenity but the moment you turn on the TV, radio, internet, or step out the door and enter a public place, there is another worldliness. Civility has been lost, values are different, the security of what was normal has disappeared. You are not alone; you just feel that way. You certainly are not the first. There are many experiencing the same thing now and many more understood the experience in the past. Two characters come to my mind. The first would be Joseph. He was rejected by his brothers, sold into slavery, put in chains, taken to Egypt, falsely accused, tossed in jail and forgotten. The second would be Daniel. He was taken captive by an invading enemy, conspired against by jealous government leaders, and tossed as dinner into a den of hungry lions. Each were separated from God’s people, living in a foreign land where idolatry, paganism and godlessness were prominent. The circumstances were beyond their control. How could one possibly rise above those types of circumstances? They did. It was not because of their own strength or wisdom that they eventually rose above all the difficulties that surrounded them. They chose to go to the source of strength, wisdom and control. They trusted the God who was in control, even when it appeared that God was not in control or even cared. They had a core that was firmly centered on a truth that made them unshakable. They believed that God was in control! Even when circumstances around were forced upon them. It was beyond their control. So, they did what they could do, exercised self-control until God’s control became evident. Both Joseph and Daniel were men of integrity, honorable and dedicated to the service of others. Joseph waited (kept the faith) almost 40 years before God’s plan for him became obvious. He went from prison to palace, 2nd in command to Pharaoh. Daniel went from lions’ den to prospering during the reigns of Darius the Mede and Cyrus, the Persian. Because of one, many lives were saved from the famine, including God’s chosen people. Because of the other, God told his people what was coming. They eventually returned to the promised land. God may not choose to save a nation through you, but he does intend to save you and impact the lives of others. We have a good God who is in control. He is able. And because God is not finished, neither are you. Remain faithful in your circumstances and watch for his plan to be revealed. Blessings, Rev. Ric

Parish Nurse Nook
Recently while doing some visitations I was asked if I was able to walk significant distances and did I have a problem
falling. Fortunately I was able to respond that I do not have an issue currently with falling and am able to walk
unaided good distances.
When working my last nursing position I worked with our Therapists. One of the physical therapists would often
relate to me the importance of maintaining balance and exercises to strengthen our core. I now find this very true
and have recently begun walking faithfully each day. (We have a very nice track at the Rec Park on Chestnut Street
where mornings are cool and shaded!)
I also encourage you to respond to this article attached by trying the YMCA Tai Chi class offered weekly here at
our facility on Wednesdays. As noted it is excellent in maintaining and increasing your balance stamina…and so
quiet, reflective and relaxing! Won’t you join us?
~Carol~
Tai chi, the winner at warding off falls
Exercising is one of the best ways to ward off falls. But which type of exercise helps most? A small randomized
controlled trial — the gold standard in research — found that tai chi is the winner. The study was published online
Sept. 10, 2018, by JAMA Internal Medicine. Researchers took 670 older adults (average age 78) with a self-reported
history of falls or mobility problems and divided them randomly into three groups. One group did tai chi only;
one group did stretching exercises only; and one group did aerobics, strength training, and balance and flexibility
exercises. All of the participants took part in their assigned activities twice a week, for an hour each time. After six
months, people in the tai chi group had experienced 58% fewer falls compared with people in the stretching group, and 31% fewer falls compared with people in the group doing several types of exercises. The type of tai chi in the
trial was tailored to older adults at risk for falling. But lots of evidence has shown tai chi in general is effective for
improving balance. It uses a series of slow, flowing motions and deep breathing. The gradual shifting of weight boosts
your strength, flexibility, range of motion, and reflexes.
