onds, back-up electricity is provided to your home or business, restoring essential

Unlike a portable generator, you don’t have to go outside, run a maze of extension
cords or bother with gasoline, because an automatic standby generator operates
on your LP or natural gas supply. Plus, when utility power returns, the generator
automatically shuts down and waits for the next outage.

How It Works
Once your standby generator has been installed outside of your home or business,
the automatic transfer switch is installed next to your main distribution panel.
With an air-cooled system, you identify the circuits you want to protect, then you
match those circuits on your distribution panel to the transfer switch’s load center.
Larger generators may protect all circuits with an appropriate transfer switch.
l The system provides monitoring of
incoming voltage from the utility line
around the clock.
l When utility power is interrupted, the
transfer switch senses the problem
and signals for the generator to
start.
l The automatic transfer switch will
then safely close off the utility line
and open a new power line from the
generator.
l Within seconds, your home standby
system will supply electricity to your
pre-selected circuits. When utility
line voltage returns, the transfer
switch will re-transfer the electrical
load back to the utility source and
resume monitoring for subsequent
utility loss.

Sizing a Generator
When choosing the right generator, you must first decide how
many circuits or rooms in your home or small business you
should protect. The more circuits that require protection, the
larger the generator you need.
The automatic transfer switch in pre-packaged, air-cooled
systems allows you to match the system’s load center circuits
to the amperage in your home’s main distribution panel. (See
Fig. A). Simply determine which circuits to protect during an
outage and choose a generator.
For whole-house protection, Carrier’s liquid-cooled
residential / light commercial models range from 25-45kW.
To get accurate sizing requirements of a liquid-cooled gener-
ator, a licensed electrician will need to apply an amp meter to
the circuits and appliances that are intended to operate on
backup power.

Sizing a Generator
When choosing the right generator, you must first decide how
many circuits or rooms in your home or small business you
should protect. The more circuits that require protection, the

The automatic transfer switch in pre-packaged, air-cooled
systems allows you to match the system’s load center circuits
to the amperage in your home’s main distribution panel. (See
Fig. A). Simply determine which circuits to protect during an

To get accurate sizing requirements of a liquid-cooled gener-
