adults and children alike are very somber. We try to change that by introducing the love of Christ to them in many ways. One of the day camp outreaches Kurt was working with was in Miskolc, with a primarily Roma (Gypsy) pop-ulation. Games are always popular with children—especially if they in-volve chocolate, which is a rare treat. These kids loved the games, but they weren’t really getting excited about working toward the prize of choco-late. This seemed strange for Roma children! Then we started playing a game of choices, using cups and pieces of paper, like the shell game in fairs. When children chose the cup with the paper under it, they were rewarded with chocolate; but if they chose a cup without the paper, they were “punished” with a face full of shaving cream ... and the kids loved the shaving cream! When we asked a local person about the children’s reactions, we were told that this group of Roma

was very unusual. The kids’ parents were pretty well off but worked a lot, so they would shower their children with gifts and candy as a substitute for time. This information changed up our entire approach! We traded the

“punishments” and the prizes, giving chocolate as a consolation prize, and

“rewarding” the winners with shaving cream! The kids loved it and laughed with us during the rest of the camp!
