A REFLECTION FROM COLLEGE DIRECTOR, MERRIDY PATTERSON, ON THE EVENTS OF THE LAST FORTNIGHT AT CARRANBALLAC P-9 COLLEGE.

Dear Carranballac Community,

We have some special moments coming up for our school as we draw towards a close for 2020. We will be sharing a fond farewell with our Year 9 students, and will make sure that their final memories of Carranballac are special after the challenges of 2020.

We will also inevitably say goodbye to a few other students across the school who will move on as their families move home (or country) and some of our Year 6s move to other secondary schools. We also have some staff who are moving to other schools. We wish each of them well for the future and know that the school and our community will hold a special place in their hearts.

Life at school is starting to feel normal. Some examples include:

• The return to regular school times

• The children happily making their own way to class at regular times

• Year 9 Graduation going ahead in a modified form

• Kindergarten transition programs running onsite

• Drinking fountains open for use

• Students able to play in all areas of the playgrounds

We are very pleased and looking forward to 2021 operating like any normal school year and welcoming our parents back into the school grounds.

Start of the 2021 School Year Staff return to school on Wednesday 27 January 2021. Students in all year levels will commence school on Friday 29 January 2021.

Safety, drop off and pick up arrangements I would like to take this opportunity to thank all families for the fantastic cooperation with our drop off & pick up arrangements during this term. These arrangements have successfully ensured the safe arrival and departure of our students whilst also facilitating appropriate social distancing amongst parents. The safety of our students, families, crossing supervisors and the community is a priority. Pick up and drop off times are a hectic time and this is the time to remember safety first.

I have been advised by Wyndham City Council that they will be unable to cover the school crossings on the last day of school on Friday 18 December at 1.00pm. Please make appropriate arrangements for that day so your children can cross the road safely.

Have a lovely week.

College Primary Science Specialist Update

Fun with the new Rube Goldberg Kits In Year 3, we have been studying contact and non-contact forces in Science. One of the challenges recently completed is to get a ping pong ball into a cup. Students designed a contraption to do this then made their creation, combining Science with the Design Process and Problem Solving. There was a wide variety of solutions across the six classes with varying degrees of success. Cheering and celebration was a regular feature of these lessons. A few of the solutions are shown below.

Here the students flick the ping pong ball onto a dual track which uses gravity to send it into the cup.

These students sent a marble down a track made from pipes. The marble pushes the ping pong ball into the cup, guided by two blocks.

In this contraption a marble is sent down a track leaning on the table. This sets a line of dominoes in motion. The last domino knocks the ping pong ball, which is guided by some blocks, into the cup on the floor.

Grade 4 Aqua is learning about “Heat Transfer” through radiation.

Students from Carranballac College were given an insight into the lives of Olympic and Paralympic athletes as part of an educational program run by the Victorian Institute of Sport.

College year 8 student Lauren, an avid basketballer and football player, said she enjoyed hearing from the dieticians who work with Victoria’s elite athletes.

“Frankly I think the VIS presenter did a fantastic job at explaining everything,” she said.

“The Nutrition Advancement session not only educated me but motivated me.

“I had an idea that nutrition played a part but I feel so confident now that I know what foods to eat.”

Carranballac Health and PE teacher, Danielle Speranza, said that the VIS series was a great experience for the students who were selected to participate in the program.

“The selected students benefitted immensely from being extended, this gave them an opportunity to further their knowledge and learning how it can be applied to an athlete’s program,” Ms Speranza said.

The VIS Sport Advancement Series is supported by the state government as part of the Department of Education and Training’s Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series.

Program co-ordinator Cathryn Pruscino said she has been overwhelmed by the interest schools have shown in the series.

“Victorian teachers have jumped at the opportunity to engage their students in these specialised sessions, extending their understanding of nutrition and sport science and how they relate to health, wellbeing, exercise and performance,” Ms Pruscino said.

The VIS sessions are free for students at government schools. Teachers can book sessions at vis.org.au/vis-advancement-series-

Hi Parents, Carers and Guardians,

As we are nearing the end of the year, now would be a good time to start the enrolment process, for children who wish to attend in 2021, to ensure a smooth transition, especially for families who have children with medical needs, this way we can have all medication and documentation ready, when your child attends.

We are also asking all parents carers and guardians to please ensure your OSHClub details are current and up to date, especially those authorised to pick up your children, their phone numbers and addresses, as this will make it easier in an emergency to get in contact with individuals.

Please remember that Term 4 is “no hat, no play” so please remember to put a second hat in your child’s bag so we can all go outside to play

Festival of Sports Report : Boardwalk Week 9

The Festival of Sport (FOS) has been going extremely well, according to the kids who are playing. They say that the FOS has been an amazing opportunity to play sports after being in remote learning and lockdown. While some teams are staying the same, some sports are picking new teams each week because they are more focused on having fun, than competing. We have two more weeks of FOS to go!

- Shakaylah and Alyssa (9A) – FOS Media

The FOS at Carranballac has proven to be a success for both Primary and Secondary students. For the Primary students, it helps them with a physically active start to their school life. It also helps the student’s teamwork at an early point. For Secondary students, FOS helps with leadership, especially for the year 9s that are looking for a job soon – having leadership experience counts! Overall, the FOS is a great experience for everyone. As the year 9 students run the FOS, it even helps the teachers, because they get to have breaks from the students!

- Levi (9B) – Primary and Secondary Basketball Leader

Notable quotes about the FOS program:Samuel 8A (Secondary Badminton): It’s the funnest thing ever!

Madi 8A (Secondary Netball): It’s very active and entertaining!

Bella 9A (Volleyball): I like that we get to make up our own teams on the spot so we can get straight into playing. It’s also good exercise.

Tahlia 6B (Primary Netball): It’s a good opportunity since we couldn’t do sports and interschool sports in lockdown.

Eshal 5A (Primary Soccer): It’s good because I really enjoy playing soccer!

MUSIC MATTERS | MIK WEIR

With the end of the year comes change; our various classrooms moving up a level means that our year 9s will move on from Carranballac.

Congratulations to our VET Music Industry students on their attainments or certificate achievements in this extremely challenging year. In our final musical items for this compromised year, we look forward to hearing various selected classes perform at our end of year assemblies and thank them for presenting their music to us.

On a personal note, the end of the year will mark the end of my three year tenure at Carranballac. My wife and I are realising a long held desire to move to the country and as such, will be setting off for Central Victoria at year’s end where we look forward to negotiating a mere two sets of traffic lights in our small town and enjoying dark, starry nights! But in leaving, there is sadness - overseeing

the Carranballac Music Program has been a career highlight for me, as was the opportunity to take on a variety of leadership positions. In terms of the music program, I feel confident about the road ahead for the students as they continue to work with our expert staff.

While the impending loss of our Certificate III

Music Performance program was a low point for the Music Department, this is balanced out by the ever improving quality of our fabulous classroom programs, particularly through the introduction of marimba based music, the newly adopted Soundtrap program and the ongoing focus on being hands on in our learning.

I have personally also had the opportunity to teach high school music for the first time in my career. Monday mornings with 8A were a joy! We’ve played marimbas, rock band instruments and learnt how to create a samba on percussion instruments (see photos below) during what face to face learning time we had. I wish everyone all the best in 2021 and thank the Music Team of Warren Grima, Emoke Molnar, James Wakeling and Alex Colston-Ing for being such a pleasure to work with.
