A REFLECTION FROM COLLEGE DIRECTOR, BRENDAN O’BRIEN, ON THE EVENTS OF THE LAST FORTNIGHT AT CARRANBALLAC P-9 COLLEGE.

Dear parents and members of our Carranballac community,

Welcome to this week’s fortnightly newsletter.

What an amazing community we have. Point Cook readily displays Carranballac P-9 College values in many different ways.

This is exampled by a recent demonstration of responsibility shown by our community when staff were recently offered support by two members of our local community who bychance came upon a situation where additional support was appreciated.

College Values, Respect, Responsibility and Inclusiveness were demonstrated during the Colour Fun Run day this fortnight. We had a huge turn out of parents and the inclusive nature of our volunteers acting as support persons was terrific. The respect and responsibility that was on show; from all members of our community during the Fun Run, was pleasing to be a part of.

The resilience demonstrated by our band of volunteers, staff and students in less-than-ideal conditions was certainly uplifting. Our Parents & Friends team are again to be congratulated for conducting an adventurous (first-time) activity that coupled with fundraising for the College.

Unfortunately I was unable to get to both campuses to immerse myself in the fun and enjoyment. I believe my photo suitably depicts why this was the case. Our students are also to be congratulated for the positive manner in which they embraced the event in the conditions they were faced with. I can see that this could readily become a yearly event.

Our students have written about their Fun Run experience and can be viewed further in the Newsletter.

We have a major obstacle to this becoming a yearly event along with Mother’s Day and Father’s Day stalls, College Fair, Trivia Night and many more smaller opportunities to raise funds to support our students and College. These wonderful events are all in jeopardy as the numbers of volunteers on the Parents and Friends shrinks more and more each year.

If you have not yet considered the benefits of becoming a P&F team member, maybe I can persuade you? The P&F team are exactly that – a TEAM, who collaborate and plan together in order to benefit the students of the College. They have fun, gain a sense of purpose, make new friends

Planning for the 2020 School Year has begun. If your child/ren will not be returning in 2020 please complete the Advice of Student Transfer form in the Newsletter and return to the Office.

Page 3: CARRANBALLAC · 2019-11-15 · Martial Arts around the world. Nick was commended for a lifetime of dedication to the development of martial arts training and instruction, and community

with common interests, gain great satisfaction from their contributions, connect strongly with staff, and make and mould ideas through working closely with staff representatives. I attend meetings and address to any P&F matters that are raised and more. They are a wonderful bunch of dedicated, supportive volunteers. Register your interest now by emailing the College or leaving a message at one of the College offices. The more the merrier, if you can only commit a small portion of time that is fine, we appreciate any and all help.

If you want to know more then please ask and I will respond. So much is at stake if we do not have the support of more parent volunteers on board for next year.

From time to time we hear of success in our community and wish to congratulation Nick Conduit, parent member of our Jamieson Way school. Nick was recently awarded his 6th Dan in Hapkido and promoted to Australian Director of the World Kukmuwon Foundation – celebrating Health, Culture and Korean Martial Arts around the world. Nick was commended for a lifetime of dedication to the development of martial arts training and instruction, and community programs for young people (including the Year 9 Martial Arts classes for elective class My Body The Machine, at Carranballac P-9 College).

Certification as an Internationally qualified Master Instructor of Hapkido, Hosinsul and Tukkon Moosool (Military Special Forces Close Quarter Combat) was presented to Nick from retired South Korean Army General and Hapkido Grand Master Young-Jin Hwang (pictured).

Well done Nick.

Dear Parents,

We trust that families enjoyed the long weekend and had a relaxing time together. It’s been a wild and woolly couple of weeks in Melbourne, from extreme heat, thunderstorms and hailstones to cold wintery conditions which can test the best of us!

We are now into our final 6 weeks of the 2019 school year and it will continue to crack on at break-neck speed. The last two weeks have been another fruitful and busy time; our Foundations and Year 1 students are to be commended for their efforts in getting to the swimming pool every day and ended the eight-day course with smiles on their faces. We thank families for supporting this program and for getting down to the pool to support your children.

Over the past few weeks our students have been out and about. A delegation of students attended the Melbourne Water’s Kids Teaching Kids conference, presenting a workshop and winning awards for their work. The rockband were special guests at the Gala Dinner and had the place rocking.

We enjoyed a hike in the Brisbane Ranges with our Year 9 elective students and Year 6 students participating in a gala cricket day with members of the Melbourne Renegades.

We have to say a huge thank you to our P&F committee for their organisation and running of our Colour Fun Run which was well supported by students, staff and families. The students enjoyed the colours and had a great time whilst raising money for the school.

Our P&F committee work tirelessly throughout the year to engage with our community, organise events that are appealing to our students and their families. If you are interested in joining a dynamic

group please contact the office at your campus.

As we head towards the end of the year staff will be preparing final assessments which will be fed into end of year reports. It is important that our students are here at school every day during this time so that our staff can get a true measure of the growth students have made.

End of year reports will be uploaded to Compass and made available for families to download, read and/or print at home. Families will be notified when student reports are available. If you have not yet accessed Compass and require your login details please contact the Admin Office on 9395 3533.

Student reports are an excellent opportunity to sit down with your child and read through their semester progress; discussing individual strengths and areas for improvement. In preparing your child for the year to come, it may be timely to discuss future school goals and what they hope to achieve in 2020 from what they have learned in 2019.

A REFLECTION FROM JAMIESON WAY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, STEVEN MONTGOMERY AND ACTING BOARDWALK PRINCIPAL, MICHAEL VILLANI, ON THE EVENTS OF THE LAST FORTNIGHT AT CARRANBALLAC P-9 COLLEGE.

It’s Hayfever season! Springtime in Melbourne is here and that means some of our students will be suffering from symptoms at school. If your child is a sufferer ask them how they’re feeling and if they need

that tablet make sure they have one in the morning.

Page 5: CARRANBALLAC · 2019-11-15 · Martial Arts around the world. Nick was commended for a lifetime of dedication to the development of martial arts training and instruction, and community

Trent is certainly a dog in demand! Whilst Mr Villani was visiting South Korea with Year 8 students, Ms O’Brien provided Trent with a very a busy schedule. Teachers had the opportunity to allocate their classes to a “Trent Timetable” across both campuses, giving our four-legged College staff member plenty of time providing much needed care and therapy to our students.

The teachers provided some fantastic feedback of when Trent was in their classroom. Trent provided 3C with assistance in investigating ‘Australia’ during their computer time; reading about punctuation and playing outdoor class games.

He may have had a little too much fun on the Jamieson Way wet oval; although luckily for the Admin staff they didn’t need to call his parents for a spare change of clothes! After a good towel dry and some time inside he dried off and was able to carry on his with schooling.

TRENT WENT VISITING!

Band Performances

On Friday 1 November, the Junior and Senior Rock Bands, along with the Year 9 Elective Band, all performed at Featherbrook College. This performance also acted as an assessment for the Certificate II Music Performance students as they considered OH&S requirements and demonstrated their ability to bump in and out. It was a pleasure to have all three of our bands performing off-campus for the first time. Thanks to the staff and students at Featherbrook for hosting us.

On Tuesday 29 October, The Senior Rock Band wrapped up the annual Kids Teaching Kids Gala. This event is held on the grounds of Melbourne University, in Wilson Hall. The band, complete with cameos by Mrs Colston-Ing and myself, rocked through their set to the obvious enjoyment of the KTK students.

Choir and Kapa Haka Performances

Both groups will soon be performing at the Town Centre in Point Cook. We encourage any interested family and friends to come along and support them.

Kapa Haka – Thursday 21 November 2pm, in the pop up park, outside Nandos

Choir – Tuesday 26 November 2pm, in the food court

A smaller group of Kapa Haka members will also perform at the Jamieson Way Kinder this week. Meanwhile, our Choir have already performed at the Kinder. The girls sang their way through six songs and readily entertained their young audience. The group are growing in confidence and developing a strong sense of pitch and cohesiveness.

A message from your Student Environmental Leaders:

It was a great effort and commitment by the following Year 7 & 8 Carranballac P-9 College students who participated in the Robbie Kearns Shield State Rugby Competition last Thursday 7 November at Jacana Reserve, Broadmeadows. The students have been dedicated in their training Monday afternoons on the Point Cook Oval during Term 3 and 4. Thank you immensely to Francis and Terina Chase, Ms Trajkovska and Ms Barnes who have been assisting with these sessions.

It has been a great journey encompassing community connectedness and establishment of some great friendships.

The boys tackle team won their first two rounds easily against Mt Ridley Secondary College and The Grange (B) team. Unfortunately, they lost the semi-final round against Victoria University Secondary College (B) team.

Thank you to the Parents & Friends Association who provided funds to purchase some wonderful new sport

uniforms (Rugby/Soccer and Netball dresses) for the Carranballac P-9 College teams to wear proudly in their sport competitions. The designs and colours look absolutely stunning. Students enjoyed wearing the tops for the first time in this competition!

The trip consisted of many memorable experiences especially the super long layovers, the homestay and the amazing food we all had. We visited many palaces and temples but to experience these unforgettable adventures there were a lot of walking and long bus rides. On the morning of Friday, the 18th of October we visited Daechong Middle School. All the students were especially kind, genuine and welcoming and the schooling environment was so different and fresh compared to Australian schooling system. My favourite moment spent was the homestay, they cooked amazing meals and were all very welcoming, but the most heart-warming thing was all the friends I made on this trip. Sarah 8P

Korea was an amazing trip to be allowed to go on, my favourite thing about this trip would be, when we went to the park and played a game of gang-up, and (I won, no biggie). This was my favourite because it was just so much fun to see everyone being together and playing like we were kids again. Tia 8R

I am so thankful to the school for letting me go on the Korea trip. I had the best time on the trip because it was so cool to see a new country and meet new people. My favourite part of the whole trip was visiting the Korean middle school, everyone at school seemed excited to see us just like we were excited to meet them. I had the most amazing time and I would like to thank the teacher for organising the trip. Charlotte 8R

Going to South Korea was an amazing opportunity. Being able to go across the world at a young age and experience a whole new culture was not only a once in a lifetime opportunity, but it also taught us to become

more independent and it showed us all how big the world really is. I made a lot of memories that will definitely last a lifetime and I cannot wait to travel again. Ratu 8R

I am so grateful to my parents and my teachers for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity. In Korea everyone is so nice to you and I would definitely go back there again for a holiday. The school in Korea is like nothing I’ve ever seen I wish that we could have more time to spend with my Korean classmates. I still can’t believe that I went to another country and I would get held back a year just to go again. Rovin 8Q

I actually really liked it, not only was it a different experience but it got us thinking about how other people’s lifestyles were compared to ours. The formalities, the housing, the rules and manners, also speech. I liked how the family and even the school went out of their way to provide us with activities that would intrigue us and make us happy. I would go back to Korea to experience everything all over again. Kelae 8P

It was a really interesting experience seeing different countries after living in one for so long, being there was amazing seeing the vibrant cities and amazing people around the area. Thanks to all of the staff, parents and schools for giving us the opportunity to go to South Korea and stay at people’s homes. Bryce 8P

It was an amazing experience getting to see how different Korea is than Australia, I was really grateful that I got the opportunity. I want to thank all the staff that got us there and also the families and staff at Daechong Middle School. I really loved going to Korea and I would definitely go there again. Mia 8P

It was an amazing trip, everyone was nice and hospitable when we arrived to the school and homestay families. The food was great; I tried as much as I could and in my opinion, it was awesome. Our time in South Korea was unforgettable. Gabriel 8P

Going to South Korea was an amazing experience that I will never forget. I got to experience a different way of life in South Korea. I enjoyed the food, culture, music and people. South Korea really inspired me and is such a safe place with the kindest people you’ll ever meet. This was

an unforgettable adventure with heaps of fun activities to do everyday. I loved every second of the trip and making strong friendships that will last me for life. Thank you for this amazing opportunity that I won’t forget. Tia 8B

When we went to Korea we did some very memorable activities. Personally, my favourite experience in Korea was all the sightseeing, like the many palaces we went too. I also really enjoyed the school visit and the homestay. There wasn’t really much I disliked about the trip, apart from the travelling which was always expected. Amelie 8C

On the 15th of October we flew to Busan, South Korea. We had a wonderful time and we learnt lots about the culture and the history of South Korea. In Busan, we spent lots of time with our Korean buddies from Daechong MS and made friendships that will last a lifetime. They were so accommodating and kind. Overall, the 2019 Korea trip was a great experience that I would recommend to anyone. Chloe 8C

Going to the gaming lounge in South Korea was my best experience. There was a whole bunch of PC’s. Overall the trip was very fun! Jonny 8C

Year 9 STEM Earth Ed. As part of their unit on Plate Tectonics, Year 9 students travelled to Earth Ed at Mount Clear College to take part in a range of activities around plate tectonics and their effects – such as earthquakes. Working on two main activities they used Virtual Reality to experience the different kinds of fault lines, and the effects that earthquakes have on the landscapes. They then tried to re-inforce towers to see how different sized shapes impacted on the infrastructure of a building. Finally they built and programmed ‘droids’ to move blocks around a space. Everyone had a great time, and it was interesting to be out learning from different experts in the field.

Kids Teaching Kids ConferenceIn Week 4 student leaders from Year 6 and Year 9 took part in the Kids Teaching Kids conference. They were involved in performing a play they had written for an audience of over 500, including politicians and students from across Australia. They then took part in workshops learning how they as students, could become leaders to help their environment.

Australian Maths CompetitionThis Year Carranballac P-9 College received an incredible amount of Mathematicians to join in the Australian Maths Competition. Special congratulations goes to all students who undertook this challenge, including Kevin Hung, in Year 8, who received a High Distinction for his high quality work. Congratulations to all students who were involved in this challenge, and we hope to see more eager Mathematicians next year.

Poetry Slam by 3B

I Am Enough!Fred 3B

I am enough as I can be,

I can be enough as I can be.

As I look in a mirror for some reflections,

I see perfections as a correction.

I am not a fighter,

I am a lover,

giving for living.

Right every night,

I am a warrior for love,

treat yourself like someone you love.

I Am EnoughBy Geneva 3B

As you look at me,

you will see you are enough.

As you look at your reflection,

you may see perfection.

You may give me a correction,

but I don’t need a new direction.

You may be communicator,

but I am the illuminator!

You don’t have to be tough,

to be enough.

I am enough!

I Am EnoughJasmin 3B

As I look in my reflection,

I see no perfection,

but I lead to perfection,

and I don’t need direction,

because I listen to my heart.

As I get older,

the days get longer.

I stand taller,

and I remember the direction,

that led me to perfection

and I am enough!

I Am EnoughBy Jayden 3B

You should care about yourself,

because if you want something it will on be limited.

Then if you want a car,

In a couple of days you’ll want to sell it.

A kid wants a bell,

then he hates it.

If you stare in a mirror,

you will know what you want,

And what you want is yourself unlimited!

Thank you Ms Guthrie, classroom Teacher for 3B, for submitting these pieces of poetry. Written by students in 3B, students reflect on looking at their internal self and the ways they are strong, valued, empowered, resilient and open to growth and development.
