A word from the Choir This concert is a fond tribute to the great choral director and arranger David Willcocks. Most of us will never have met him, but any Christmas Carol service or concert is impossible to imagine without his input. He edited the famous “Carols for Choirs” series, from which this concert’s music is taken. He also, as part of his work with the choir of King’s College, Cambridge, composed all of the famous descants with which we decorate the last verse of our carols. He died last September, aged 95. Tonight is Hart Voices’ tribute to this giant of choral music.

We also gratefully acknowledge the help of all the staff and volunteers of both the Phyllis Tuckwell fundraising team in Farnham and the PTH Fleet Support Group. In addition to the broadcasts, concerts, special events and daily services there, Roy also sings regularly with such groups as The King’s Consort and The Clerks, combining their various performing, touring and recording schedules with his work as a soloist, singing teacher and conductor. He has conducted several choirs and ensembles, including the Goldsmiths’ Chorus, The University of London Union Chorus, The Hanover Singers and Candlelight Opera. He is currently musical director of two choirs: Hart Voices (Fleet, Hampshire) and The Chantry Singers (Guildford, Surrey). Roy has performed as a soloist with many of Britain’s leading orchestras including the City of London Sinfonia, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the London Mozart Players. In addition to performances in all London’s best-known concert venues, his work has taken him all over the country and throughout Europe as well as to Israel and the States. He has appeared on many CD recordings, film soundtracks and radio and television broadcasts, both at home and abroad. Recent conducting work includes performances of Stainer’s Crucifixion, Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices, Mozart’s Dominican Vespers, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Haydn’s Nelson Mass. Recent singing engagements include broadcasts of music from Agincourt on BBC Radio 3 with The Clerks and of the London 7/7 memorial service from St Paul’s Cathedral on BBC TV, as well as tours to France, the Netherlands and the United States. This month will see performances of Handel’s Messiah in Worcester Cathedral and St Paul’s Cathedral, where he will also be singing many, many Christmas Carols. He also appears as a soloist on a new Christmas CD with the choir of St Paul’s on Decca Records.

Roy Rashbrook was educated at Dauntsey’s School, going on to study Music at Goldsmith’s College and Singing under Alexander Oliver, William McAlpine and Rudolf Piernay at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. After a brief flirtation with a career in teaching, Roy became a professional singer in 1998, joining the world famous choir of Saint Paul’s Cathedral the following year; a position which offers some precious stability in the life of a freelance musician!

Michael graduated with a BA (Hons) Degree in Music from the University of Chichester, which has supplemented a wide range of musical studies - teachers have included Terence Allbright and Julian Cooper (piano/organ) and Michael Finnissy (Composition).

Since working at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Michael now works for the Civil Service, but maintains an active musical career as both a recitalist, the Director of Music at St Peter's Church Farnborough, and the Associate Conductor and Accompanist for Hart Voices, Fleet.

PHYLLIS TUCKWELL HOSPICE …..because every day is precious

When we opened in 1979, we were revolutionary. Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice is one of the oldest hospices in South-East England. In the 1970s, modern hospices were a new concept: the first modern hospice had opened in the UK just 12 years previously, when former nurse, Dame Cicely Saunders, spearheaded a campaign to create a place where terminally ill patients could find a restful and caring environment away from the hustle and bustle of a hospital. Her goal was to combine this with the best palliative care that modern medicine could offer: palliative care beginning where curative treatment was no longer possible. Phyllis Tuckwell was a local mother of three who was diagnosed with cancer in 1949. Her husband, Sir Edward Tuckwell, was an eminent surgeon at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and former Sergeant-Surgeon to Her Majesty the Queen. Following Phyllis’ death in 1970, Sir Edward resolved to strive for greater choices for terminally ill patients. Combined with some notable forces, an ambitious project was embarked upon: to create a modern hospice in West Surrey, to be named after Sir Edward’s late wife. Phyllis Tuckwell is the only Hospice Care service for adult patients, and their families, affected by cancer or other serious progressive illnesses (such as heart, lung or neurological disease) across the whole of West Surrey and part of North East Hampshire, both at the Hospice, at the Beacon Centre and in the community. For over 35 years Phyllis Tuckwell has provided supportive and end of life care to people affected by a terminal illness in West Surrey and North East Hampshire, serving 550,000 residents. Every day we support over 250 patients, carers and their families in their own homes, in the community, at the Hospice in Farnham (In-Patient Unit, Day Hospice, out-patient appointments and through Patient & Family Support) and now the Beacon Centre in Guildford (Day & Therapy Unit, out-patient appointments and through Patient & Family Support). The NHS/Government only covers 20% of our costs, which means we rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community. All our services are free of charge to our patients and their families, but we need to raise over £15,000 a day to offer such an exceptional standard of clinical care and support.

Hart Voices is a mixed voice choir based in Fleet, Hampshire which achieves a high-standard of singing from a non-auditioned choir. We perform four concerts each year across three terms running from September to July. Our programme varies from stunning major choral works to satisfying chamber music programmes and the occasional light programme of popular numbers! Singers are drawn not only from Fleet and the surrounding area, but also outlying towns including Guildford and Basingstoke. Choir membership is currently around 50 voices, many of whom have sung with the choir for several years. The combined experience and enthusiasm enables us to explore new musical horizons - both in repertoire and venue. We aim to broaden our experience, strive for quality and musicality in our performances and involve young singers wherever possible. Soloists are drawn from the choir, although for more complex works we often invite professional singers to participate.

I joined Hart Voices in September 1998 having been looking for a choir for some time. I had sung in choirs throughout my childhood and teenage years and had now completed my first year of teaching and was ready to get singing again! A local paper came through my door with an advert for Hart Voices and I asked my friend Jenny (still a fellow alto) to come along with me. The rest is history!

My first concert was Benjamin Britten Ceremony of Carols and I can remember how amazing it felt as the first bars were sung in the concert. We have come a very long way since then and it wasn't long before Roy arrived and took the choir to a new level.

In the 17 years I have sung in the choir I have never missed singing in a concert. I did indeed manage to sing in the Christmas concert 5 days before having my twins and I remember Roy's raised eyebrows during the concert as we sung about the birth of the baby!!! The same scenario happened 6 years later having my 3rd daughter. Fortunately nothing happened during the concert! That says a lot about how I feel about being a part of Hart Voices. My week is packed with teaching and most importantly being a mum to my 3 girls, but that window of 2 hours on a Wednesday night is very important to me and I rarely miss it if I can help it.

I have recently finished a 10 year stint as librarian for Hart Voices and I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the committee. It is made up of a happy bunch of people who all work very hard and do their best to make sure the choir runs smoothly. Being on the committee gives you a great insight into the running of the choir and I highly recommend it to other members (don't worry, you don't have to do 10 years!)

Without doubt my proudest moment was last year when my two school choirs were asked to sing at the Phyllis Tuckwell Concert with Hart Voices. It was a moment that combined so much that holds dear to me, singing myself and encouraging young children to do the same! To see those little faces singing their hearts out at a standard that I felt so proud of was magical. My heart was on my sleeve and it was the most special moment of my teaching career. So here we are again tonight.........I hope they delight you again!
