Biographical/Historical note: Mari Sandoz was born May 11, 1896 to Marie E. (Fehr) Sandoz

and Jules A. Sandoz on the family homestead in Sheridan County in northwestern Nebraska.

She was the oldest of six children, Caroline, Flora, Fritz, James, and Jules Jr. Mari was

responsible for the care of her younger brothers and sisters from a very early age.

Upon completing her elementary education, she passed the rural teachers exam and

qualified as a teacher. She taught for the next seven years in rural schools in Sheridan and

Cheyenne Counties in western Nebraska. She married Wray Macumber in 1914, but the

marriage was dissolved five years later.

Although Mari never attended high school, she avidly aspired to have a college education.

She was able to persuade officials at the University of Nebraska to admit her and, for some

ten years – between 1922 and 1932, she attended classes as a part time student, but never

received her degree. She supported herself during the period in Lincoln, Nebraska, as a

worker in a drug laboratory, as an English assistant, as a research assistant in the Nebraska

State Historical Society, and as a proofreader of the Nebraska State Journal.

Mari began her writing career as a young girl. She had her first story entitled “The Broken

Promise” published in The Omaha Daily News when she was ten years old. In spite of her

father's violent disapproval of her artistic endeavors, she continued writing. In 1927, the

Prairie Schooner carried her short story “The Vine” in its first issue.

Mari’s literary recognition came with the publication of Old Jules, a biography of her

father. The manuscript was rejected multiple times by various publishers before winning

The Atlantic Nonfiction Contest in 1935.

The Trans-Missouri Series (or the Great Plains Series) that opened with The Beaver Men

and was concluded with The Cattlemen in 1958 is undoubtedly Mari Sandoz' central

achievement. She undertook the detailed, almost laboratory, study of one region, i.e., the

Trans-Missouri Country, from the early stages of settlement to the recent times in order to

learn more about human nature in general. The Series also included Crazy Horse,

Cheyenne Autumn, The Buffalo Hunters, and Old Jules. Crazy Horse, the biography of the

Oglala Sioux leader, was named, in 1954, as one of the Ten Best Books of the West by

The Chicago Corral, the parent group of the Westerners. Cheyenne Autumn, depicting the

struggle of a small band of homesick Indians on their way to their ancestral home, was

made into a movie, though she was disappointed with the result because the movie did not

follow the text. One of the goals of her writing was to correct some of the myths about the

American West; therefore, she had little patience for typical depictions of Plains Indians,

western outlaws and pioneer life.

Mari Sandoz also wrote novels, several short stories, and essays. Slogum House, published

in 1937, explores the darker aspects of the human character. It was followed in 1939 by

Capital City, which was described by reviewers as an indictment of the sordidness of

political and social life in a middle-western capitol. Other novels of note are Miss Morissa,

The Tom-Walker, and Son of the Gamblin' Man.

She received numerous awards during her lifetime. The National Achievement Award by

the Westerners Chicago Corral in 1955 could be singled out as it recognized her

contribution to the preservation of the cultural background of the American West through

her writing, and for her unequalled achievement in having four of her books selected by

Westerners in a nationwide poll as ranking in the One Hundred Best Books on the West.

In her busy writing career, Mari Sandoz also shared her literary talent with students. She

was a staff member of the Writers' Conference at the University of Colorado in 1941 and

at the University of Indiana in 1946. Between 1947 and 1956, Mari taught Advanced

Novel Writing at the Writers' Institute, part of the University of Wisconsin Summer

Program. The University of Nebraska awarded her in 1950 an honorary degree of Doctor

of Literature. In 1954, Governor Robert B. Crosby declared August 23 as "Mari Sandoz

Day" in Nebraska.

Sandoz traveled widely, mainly in pursuit of research materials for her books. Eventually,

she established a permanent home in New York's Greenwich Village in order to be close to

essential libraries and archives, as well as to her publishers. In the eastern self-imposed

exile she wrote about the West she loved.

Mari Sandoz died on March 10, 1966. According to her wishes, her body was buried on

the “Old Jules Place” south of Gordon, Nebraska, in the Sandhills.

Caroline Sandoz Pifer was the youngest child of Marie E. (Fehr) Sandoz and Jules A.

Sandoz. She was born in Grayson, Nebraska, on May 21, 1910. She graduated from

Gordon High School in 1927 and attended Chadron State College from 1928-1929.

Between 1929 and 1933 she worked as a teacher in Sheridan and Cherry Counties in

Nebraska, serving 3 full terms. She married Robert Pifer in 1935 and the couple had two

daughters - Eleanor and Mary Ann. In 1943-1944, she returned to teaching in Sheridan

County and also taught two short terms between 1947 and 1974.

While Caroline was very busy as a ranch wife and mother, she was active in her

community. She served as a school district moderator for ten years and on the Election

board for fifteen years. She was a member of the Sunbeam Calyx Federated Garden Club

from 1954-1992 and the Nebraska State Historical Society from 1968-2001.

In her role of executor for Mari Sandoz, Caroline was responsible for carrying out Mari’s

last wishes and managing the literary estate. While the bulk of Mari’s research collection

was deposited at the Archives at the University of Nebraska, her personal papers and

belongings were brought to the Pifer Ranch outside of Gordon. Caroline wrote several

books about Mari and co-wrote a biography about her brother Jules Jr.

Scope and Content note: This collection contains materials retained by Caroline Sandoz Pifer

after Mari’s death in 1966. Included are some of Mari’s carbon copies of her own letters, thermo-

copies of Mari’s correspondence produced by Caroline, multiple drafts of Mari’s books, short

stories, as well as works in progress, financial records, and assorted clippings and collected

materials. While some notes were found throughout the collection, it should be noted that the

bulk of Mari’s research material is not included here.

Caroline maintained and grew this collection between 1966-1997 adding memorabilia sent to

her, collecting clippings related to Mari, and typing introductions to Mari’s letters and short

works. Thus this collection is a blend of both Caroline and Mari and at times it is not easy to

separate the two.

The chart on the next page shows the journey of Mari’s Correspondence from her possession to

various repositories around the United States, including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and

the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.

Series 1. Mari Sandoz Correspondence, 1929-1966

Boxes 1-27

Scope and content note: The correspondence has two components, Mari’s documents and

Caroline’s. Mari’s letters include carbons of her outgoing letters, as well as incoming letters,

greeting cards and postcards. They represent only a fraction of the Mari’s correspondence and

follow her struggle to get published through the height of her career as an author. Professional

and personal correspondence is represented, including letters from family and friends.

From 1966-1969, Caroline Sandoz Pifer copied the bulk of Mari’s correspondence using a 3-M

Dual Spectrum thermocopy machine. They represent Caroline’s concern that the family retains

complete copy of Mari’s correspondence. Caroline seemed especially concerned that once the

letters were made public through the University of Nebraska collection, the family could face

litigation.

These copies served as the basis for Caroline’s column “Memoranda from Mari Sandoz Letters”

published in the Gordon Journal between 1970- 1972 ( later published in the two volume set

Letters to the Gordon Journal) and for her series of books The Making of an Author. The thermo-

copies vary in condition and are in some cases completely illegible. These copies were produced

on chemically unstable paper and will continue to deteriorate over time. The thermocopies and

photocopies are not in strict chronological order.

Arrangement Note: The original letters are arranged chronologically by date, followed by

undated letters. The thermo-copies of Mari’s letters retain Caroline’s arrangement which is rough

chronological with some letters arranged by subject matter and some arranged by range of letters

within a series of year.

Series 2. Mari Sandoz Manuscripts and Publications

Boxes 28-47

Scope and content note: This series consists of manuscripts and galley proofs of some of Mari’s

books, short stories, essays, talks, scripts, poetry, reviews and critiques of other authors’ works,

and her own unfinished works. The unfinished works were found in a green filing box labeled

“Writing in Progress.” Mari’s original folder titles were retained wherever legible. However,

documents belonging to Caroline, including cover sheets were found throughout the files and it

is likely that files have been added and removed and do not necessarily represent Mari’s original

order. These notes and manuscripts have been retained as a group at the end of the series. They

include early drafts of short stories, material related to Crazy Horse and The Storycatcher, essays

and Love Song to the Plains.

Arrangement note: This series is grouped by manuscript type and arranged alphabetically by

the title of the work. The short works were found mostly in alphabetical order and this was

retained due to the bulk of the material.

Series 3. Research Files and Book Related Materials

Boxes 48-49

Scope and content note: This series includes some notes, and materials related to specific

books, but these are fragmentary. A few intact folders of Mari’s notes were found and these are

indicated on the folder title in quotation marks. Caroline made copies of Mari’s “Old Jules

Notebooks”, and they are included here because they represent Mari’s research.

Arrangement Note: Materials are grouped by document type and folders are arranged

alphabetically.

Series 4. Biographical and Collected Material

Box: 48, 50

Scope and content note: This series contains a variety of materials that document Mari’s life.

Included are programs and event flyers, maps, autobiographical notes, biographical clippings,

newsletters, meeting notes, and miscellaneous notes and memos, business cards, annotated

clippings and ephemera such as blank postcards, booklets and tracts. Also included is a

scrapbook Mari kept about Old Jules, and biographical material about him that she annotated.

Arrangement note: Since many of the items in this series were found mixed in with the

correspondence or scattered throughout the collection, there was no original order. Materials are

grouped by document type and arranged chronologically within the folders. Folders are arranged

alphabetically.

Series 5: Financial Records (restricted access)

Boxes 51-54, 75-76, 78

Scope and Content Note: This series includes income tax records (including non-deductible

expenses), royalty and bank statements, check stubs, and specific account files that were retained

by Mari Sandoz. The bulk of the records are from 1950-1964, but include a few items from as

early as 1925.

Arrangement Note: The income tax documents and specific account files follow Mari’s original

order. All other materials are grouped by document type and are arranged in chronological order.

Series 6: Subject files

Boxes: 55-67

Scope and Content note: These files contain both material collected by Caroline Sandoz Pifer

and Mari Sandoz. These files seemed to have been Mari’s personal files, but Caroline may have

changed some of the folder titles, and she added and removed materials as well as created new

files. Included in this series are letters, manuscripts, clippings, thermocopies of Mari’s

documents and photographs. The photographs have been relocated to the photography collection

and are cross-indexed.

Arrangement Note: Materials were originally grouped by subject matter and arranged in

alphabetical order. The original order was retained.

Series 7: Caroline Sandoz Pifer Correspondence

Box: 68

Scope and Content Note: Most of the correspondence in this series relates to Caroline’s role as

executor of the Mari Sandoz Estate starting in 1966, though there are some limited personal

letters included here. Letters between Caroline and Mari’s agents McIntosh and Otis and copies

of letters sent to Hastings House document delays in sending royalty checks from 1969-1972.

Arrangement Note: The correspondence is arranged chronologically within the folder. The

McIntosh and Otis letters were originally filed with Mari’s “Unfinished Works” in a green file

box and have been maintained as a separate file.

Series 8: Caroline Sandoz Pifer Manuscripts and Publications

Box 68-69

Scope and Content Note: Caroline Sandoz Pifer wrote several books and articles between 1969

and 2001. Included here are re-typed letters of Mari Sandoz with introductory material which

were published both as a newspaper column for the Gordon Journal, and in book form. There are

multiple drafts of The Son of Old Jules, and cover sheets and introductory material for some of

Mari’s short stories and poems that Caroline published in book form. Originally found filed with

the thermocopies of correspondence, there are also drafts and notes from Making of an Author:

Book Four, as well as indexes, notes and annotated thermocopies found in association with the

manuscript drafts.

Arrangement Note: The materials are grouped by published work in general order of

publication and are arranged into chapters whenever possible. The Gordon Journal Letters are

arranged chronologically by the dates of Mari’s letters.

Series 9: Caroline Sandoz Pifer Collected Materials

Scope and Content Note: This series includes materials of Mari’s that were on exhibit at the

Mari Sandoz Museum and given to the museum by Caroline Sandoz Pifer. There are several

exhibit descriptions included in this series, as well as an inventory, scrapbooks and ephemera

of Caroline’s.

Arrangement Note: The materials are grouped beginning with Caroline’s vitae and ends with

material from one of Caroline’s scrapbooks. This particular arrangement is reflective of

Caroline’s study of Mari’s work.

Series 10: Sandoz Family Materials

Scope and Content Note: This series includes Sandoz family records, and correspondence, most

relating to Jules Ami Sandoz and the Sandoz family store, as well as some collected materials

about the Sandoz family, and Jules Sandoz.

Arrangement Note: The Sandoz family records and correspondence are grouped in

chronological order, beginning in 1886 and ending in 1938.

Scope and Content Note: The clippings in this series are unsorted and vary in subject matter,

ranging from clippings regarding Mari to clippings describing particular topics of Mari’s writing.
