CAROLINA MASTER CHORALE The Carolina Master Chorale is recognized as the premiere symphonic chorus northeast South Carolina and southeast North Carolina. Its the oldest community singing organization in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In 2011-2012 the Chorale will celebrate its 29th concert season, and for the last 11 season under the artistic leadership of music director, Timothy Koch. Dr. Koch has partnered in each of those seasons with accompanist and composer in residence Dr. Andrew Fowler. The repertoire of the Carolina Master Chorale encompasses a wide variety of dynamic performances of traditional and lesser-known choral and choral/orchestral masterworks and premieres of new works by composer in residence, Andrew Fowler, and lighter fare from Broadway to vocal jazz to gospel music. For several years the Long Bay Symphony has engaged the CMC as its principal symphonic chorus. The Chorale performs annually on the Long Bay Symphony season series and the LBS will typically accompany the Chorale on one of its subscription programs. The organizations have collaborated to perform Bach’s St. John Passion, Beethoven’s Mass in C and Symphony No. 9, the Requiems of Mozart, Brahms and Verdi, Verdi’s Stabat Mater, Schoenberg’s Survivor from Warsaw, Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe, Holst’s The Planets, Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky, Orff’s Carmina Burana, and the operas La Traviata of Verdi and Carmen of Bizet. An impressive list of guest artists has enjoyed performing with the Carolina Master Chorale. Viennese baritone, Benno Schollum, mezzo-soprano Kirstin Chavez, world-renowned for her portrayal of the title role in Carmen, coloratura soprano Emily Hindrichs, one of the world’s most sought-after young interpreters of the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, and tenor Mark Vitale, known for his performances throughout Europe of the title role in Jesus Christ Superstar. In 2011, America’s most-performed opera composer, Carlisle Floyd, visited Myrtle Beach twice for performance events with the Carolina Master Chorale. Internationally the CMC has completed six performance tours, giving concerts throughout Great Britain, Austria, Italy, Denmark, Germany, the Czech Republic, Spain, and Costa Rica. In June 2012, the Chorale will perform tour concerts in Helsinki, Finland; Tallinn, Estonia; and St. Petersburg, Russia.

CAROLINA MASTER CHORALE

Timothy KochMusic Director & Conductor

Timothy Koch serves his 12th season as Music Director and Conductor of the Carolina MasterChorale in 2011-2012. His tenure has been marked by notable growth in artisticachievement, extensive touring, acclaimed performances of the masterworks for chorus andorchestra, opera productions, commissioning of numerous major new works, and expandededucational programming.

Koch has led the CMC in tour performances throughout Italy in 2003, and Denmark,Germany, and the Czech Republic in 2005, and throughout Spain in June 2008 and CostaRica in 2010.In South Carolina, Koch and the CMC have presented acclaimed performances of Bach's St.John Passion, the Mozart and Brahms Requiems, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Beethoven’sMass in C. A 2008 performance of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with the Long BaySymphony inspired Myrtle Beach Herald reviewer, William Hamilton to write, “Theappropriately named Carolina Master Chorale is a treasure...”

The CMC growth has also been marked by numerous successful collaborations. In recentseasons, the CMC has shared talent and resources with Conway’s Theatre of the Republic,Litchfield Dance Arts, and the Myrtle Beach School of Performing Arts for a number ofpopular community projects.

Teamed with CMC Composer-in-Residence Andrew Fowler, Koch has presented more than25 premieres of important new works by the composer. In February 2007 members of theCMC participated in the world premiere of Fowler’s most important work to date, Directionsfor Singing, a 45-minute work for chorus, orchestra, narrator, and soprano and baritonesoloists, at New York’s Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, under the baton of world-renowned choral maestro, Eph Ehly.

As founder/music director of the professional Carolina Chamber Chorale (also known as theTim Koch Singers), Koch inspired widespread artistic achievement, including five commercialrecordings.

Koch holds degrees from Illinois Wesleyan University and the University of Illinois and theDoctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. He is married toGrand Strand native and CMC member Jo Nell (Brown) Koch. He also serves the communityas Music Director at First United Methodist Church, Myrtle Beach and as a board member forthe future Myrtle Beach Performing Arts Center.
