Another carol book? No, The Carol Book! The complete resource for your Christmas servicesand concerts, offering not just one of the largest collections of carols ever published, but arange of support material that sets totally new standards in Christmas publishing.

Christmas is a time when simplicity pays enormous dividends, and the top-class choir will

find here easily sight-readable material that will move and engage the listener. Those whohave to work somewhat harder to achieve a good standard of performance will be delighted

to discover here arrangements that are both practical and imaginative.

Our highest aim has been to turn limitations intopossibilities. So, for instance, young musi-cians attempting an alto part for the first time will discover some simple material that willgive them confidence and pleasure. And choirs with limited numbers of men will appreciatetenor parts that do not go too high, as well as three part arrangements for soprano, alto and

    baritone.

Our thanks go to Tim Ruffer of The Royal School of Church Music for having confidence inour vision and encouraging us to bring it to fruition; to many distinguished writers andcomposers for allowing us to include their material and for writing for us; to Chris Idle forthe biblical index and considerable help with the liturgical material; to Peter Moger for hisassistance with the service templates; to Tim Willetts who produced the synthesised backings

for some of the more modern items*; and to Peter Wright, Stephen Disley and the choir ofSouthwark Cathedral for their willingness to embrace our vision and record The Carol

Collection, a CD of 30 carols from The Carol Bookwhich thrillingly conveys the joy of

Christmas in over 75 minutes of music from the collection.

The penultimate carol on that disc reminds us why Christmas is so special to us the gift of Godhimself to the human race. It is our fervent hope that The Carol Bookwill enhance our worshipof Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, as each Christmas comes round:

Small wonder the love, small wonder the grace, the power, the glory, the light of his face;but all to redeem my poor heart no small wonder!

    John Barnard and David Iliff

*Tim Willetts is willing to do further synthesised backings to order.

He can be contacted at: [email protected]

The Carol Collection (order number HAVPCD 313) is available from The Royal School of

Church Music, from Herald Audio-Visual Publications (www.heraldav.co.uk) e-mail:[email protected] and from Southwark Cathedral.
