Kaiso is a type of musicpopular in Trinidad andTobago and other countries,especially of the Caribbean,
such as Grenada, Barbados, St.Luciaand Dominica. With origins in WestAfrica, Kaiso evolved to Calypso.
Particularly from present dayNigeria and the Kingdom of Kongo,Kaiso was brought over by the
slaves who, in the early history ofthe artform, used it to sing abouttheir masters. The people wouldalso gather in Kaiso Tents where aGriot or lead singer would lead themin song. Many early kaisos weresung in French Creole by a personcalled a ‘Chantwell’.
Kaiso songs are generallynarrative in form and often have acleverly concealed political subtext.Performers of Kaiso are known as‘Kaisonians’. l
The Tabernacle is the place to be every first Saturday of the month,for ‘Kaiso Lime’, a taste of the Caribbean – for free!
With origins in West Africa,Kaiso evolved to Calypso.’‘

The Association of BritishCalypsonians (The ABC) is amusical arts organisation or‘federation’, of Calypsonians
whose members originating frombackgrounds all over the Englishspeaking Caribbean: Anguilla,Barbados, Dominica, Grenada,Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, etc. With its rootsplanted in 1991 by pioneers Ashton “The Mighty Tiger” Moore, Jeffrey “De Admiral” Hinds andErrol “Lord Cloak” Brown, theorganisation has a membership ofover 20 artistes and has the
potential to engage with and recruityoung artistes both of the Calypsoand Groovy Soca genre.
The ABC will celebrate theanniversary with an array ofentertaining London Calypso TentNights involving its full memberscompeting for the Calypso MonarchCrown, new younger associatesparticularly in the Groovy Socacompetition and international guestartistes, such as the entertainingheavyweights, “All Rounder”,Shirlane Hendrickson and “LadyWonder”. Together this provides arich and diverse array of songs andrhythms expressing Nation Building,

Both the Calypso and GroovySoca competitions are promised tobe exciting, as current CalypsoMonarch Sheldon Skeete aims tocapture his fifth consecutive Crownand Groove Soca King “Santiago”defends his first title.
The ABC’s Chairman, Vincent M John states: “Calypso was theoriginal music of Carnival and wemust all do our utmost best toensure that this accolade issustained by developing the art formas well as preserving the quality
that has been achieved; admittedlythis is quite a challenge in anoperating environment that isbecoming increasingly dynamic,resource constrained and with aproliferation of options, but thecommitment exists”.
