Bryce made his debut for Scotland as a hooker back in 2014 against Canada, and made one outing at the World Cup the following year as a replacement in Scotland’s five-try win over USA at Elland Road. He joined Pro 14 side Edinburgh in 2016 from west coast rivals Glasgow Warriors, along with his brother Glenn. The move provided the opportunity for Bryce to switch positions from hooker to tighthead prop, where he made his club debut off the bench against Leinster in the third round of the 2016-17 Guinness PRO12. The Scotland international, who is a product of Stirling County and Heriot’s, has previously played in England with London Irish in the Aviva Premiership back in 2013 on loan from Glasgow. He has been drafted into the Yorkshire Carnegie squad with Charlie Beech ruled out through illness this week, leaving Carnegie short of front rowers ahead of today’s clash with Hartpury at Emerald Headingley. Yorkshire Carnegie Head of Operations Chris Gibson said: “I would like to thank Richard Cockerill and his coaching staff up at Edinburgh for allowing Kevin to join us. He played for them last week against Stade Francais in the European Challenge Cup so comes to us in good shape and will be available for Sunday’s game.” Whilst the deal is only a short-term loan to cover for Beech’s absence, Bryce is keen to grab the chance to impress the Yorkshire Carnegie management as he plans for the future, saying: “I am really looking forward to getting some game- time and showing what I can do. It is a good opportunity to show my worth. “The deal came about quickly and it all happened very fast. I was actually travelling down to England to visit my girlfriend in Stoke and my agent said that the deal had been done and I needed to get myself to Leeds. I trained on Friday morning and met the boys. They are a good bunch of lads and I fitted in nicely. “I am seeing it as a bit of a trial, there is an opportunity for a tight head and with the amount of game-time I can get, hopefully I can work well for the team, and you never know if that could lead to a contract.” Bryce will become the 16th Scottish international to play for the club following in the footsteps of some prestigious names. Our most capped player of all time since the formation of the club is Scottish prop Gavin Kerr. The other Scottish internationals to have played for the club are Tony Stanger, Carl Hogg, Gordon Ross, Cameron Mather, Stuart Reid, Roland Reid, Stewart Campbell, Jamie Mayer, Dan Parks, Tom Ryder, Andy Craig, Gordon Bulloch, Jon Dunbar, Michael Cusack and Duncan Hodge.

CUSACK ANNOUNCES RETIREMENTYorkshire Carnegie prop Michael Cusack has announced his retirement from professional rugby following medical advice.

Cusack signed for Yorkshire Carnegie ahead of the 2016-17 season and it was a return to the club where the Doncaster-born player started his career as a teenager back in 2003. Over his two spells at the club he made 75 appearances, his last coming in last year’s Championship Play-o Final against London Irish. A neck injury has kept the 33-year-old out of action for the entire 2017-18 campaign.

Phil Davies gave Cusack his debut when he was aged 18 and he went on to make his full debut in the Heineken Cup at Neath-Swansea Ospreys against Welsh World Cup star Duncan Jones. His incredible rst season culminated in him being part of the Leeds Under-19s team that won the National Colts Cup for the rst time in the club’s history, beating Bedford in the nal. He was also named Leeds’ Young Player of the Year.

When he left Carnegie he played for Doncaster, Glasgow Warriors and Newcastle Falcons.

He made his Scotland debut prior to the 2015 World Cup, having quali ed

through residency after ve seasons at Glasgow Warriors.

Con rming his retirement, Cusack said: “It is with sadness that I have decided to retire from professional rugby following medical advice.

“I have been fortunate enough to be a professional rugby player for 15 years and to be part of teams that have experienced great success.

“I would like to thank everyone at Yorkshire Carnegie; it has been great to nish my playing career where it all began.”

Chris Gibson, head of rugby operations for Yorkshire Carnegie, said: “We wish Michael all the best for the future. It is always sad to see a player have to retire through injury and Michael has been a great servant to the club through his two spells and he leaves with all our best wishes.”

CLUB NEWS

SIX NATIONS LUNCH WITH MARTIN JOHNSON CBEOn Thursday 1st March we will be hosting a special Six Nations Lunch with legendary England World Cup-winning captain Martin Johnson CBE at Emerald Headingley Stadium.

The lunch will take place in the Long Bar from 12 noon and is hosted by British & Irish Lion John Bentley, and demand is expected to be high for the visit of a sporting legend to Yorkshire.

Tables of ten are available for £600 plus VAT, or individual places can be booked for £65 each plus VAT. This includes a three-course lunch.

To book places please call the Commercial Sales Team on 0113 2033222 or email [email protected] for further details.

UNDER-18S REACH HALF WAY POINT IN THE SEASONYorkshire Carnegie put in a battling performance against league leaders Wasps in wintery conditions at the Rugby School last weekend.

Ryan Gibson crossed for Carnegie’s rst try and Harry Williams scored a second, with Tom Stephenson kicking the rest of the points for the visitors.

Steve Salvin, Academy Development Coach at Yorkshire Carnegie, said: “The game was a little frustrating for us and probably our worst performance of the opening three games. The conditions were terrible and it snowed throughout the game so that did not help the quality of the game for either side.

“With 10-15 minutes to go though we were still in the game and the players can take a lot from that. It was just frustrating that had we played to the level we had in the rst two games I think it would have been a much closer game. We have got a week o now before our next xture so this will give us a chance to rest a few bruised bodies. The training programme has been a little di erent

this week because we are not focused on a game, but after that we have a match at the end of every week.

“Over the rst three games we have been able to give most players in our squad some game time and we hope to be able to give more players the opportunity to play. Last week’s game, although it wasn’t a winning result, was a good learning experience for our players and that is what the league is about. Our players will have learned a lot from that game and will take a lot from it as they continue on their development .”

COMMUNITY ROUND-UPYorkshire Carnegie’s community department have launched a new Mixed Ability rugby course at Middleton Leisure Centre, which runs every Monday between 10am and 11am.

The sessions are free to attend and are open to people aged 16+ and for all abilities, but mainly focus on those with mental or physical disabilities and those returning to rugby or wanting to play at a slower pace.

The Mixed Ability sessions, which have already run at Pontefract RUFC, are part of ‘Project Rugby’, which is an initiative from Premiership Rugby and England which aims to engage new audiences with rugby and stimulate a lifelong interest in the game.

‘Project Rugby’ is designed to increase participation in the game with people from traditionally underrepresented groups: black, Asian and minority ethnic people, people from lower socio-economic backgrounds and disabled people.

For more information on the Mixed Ability sessions email [email protected]

Yorkshire Carnegie community coach Sam Kerry has also delivered three coaching sessions at three Yorkshire clubs. As part of the community team’s commitment to supporting the development of women’s rugby, Sam has run a session with the girls team at Baildon and West Leeds. As well as this he has also been

supporting the recruitment for the Hunters team who are based in Alwoodley.

Before today’s game the community team have held a takeover morning at Aireborough and were joined by Yorkshire Carnegie players Joe Buckle and Tom Bullough.

The Aireborough players have then been invited to watch Carnegie in action against Hartpury.

At today’s game we would like to welcome players from Yorkshire Community Clubs. Look out for the Under-7s, 8s, 10s and 11s from Aireborough and Wharfedale, along with the Under-10s from York who are taking part in the half-time games. We hope you enjoy your day at Emerald Headingley.

Despite the pool stages of the British & Irish Cup having now been completed, we still do not know our fate in the competition because of last week’s postponement between Cornish Pirates and Hartpury.

The nal round of the British & Irish Cup saw plenty of drama as the Greene King IPA Championship sides looked to con rm their places in the last-eight of the competition.

Bedford Blues, Jersey Reds and Ealing Trail nders all secured top spot in their pools, whilst things were more nervy for Doncaster Knights and Yorkshire Carnegie.

Here’s our rundown of what happened in round six of the B&I Cup.

BEDFORD BLUESCONFIRM TOP SPOT

Nottingham fell to a 32-15 defeat to Bedford in their nal pool match, enabling the Blues to nish top of the group with 24 points.

Nottingham, playing away, took the lead in the match through Jordan Coghlan’s unconverted score, before a succession of drives saw Lee Dickson fall short but Ed Taylor put the nish on a hard-earned try for Bedford.

A similar move saw George Edgson power over to give the Blues the lead, and their third try was struck soon after when Will Hooley sent over a pin-point kick for Dean Adamson to ground.

Adamson completed his double after the break, meaning Vili Hakalo’s try in response for Nottingham wasn’t to be enough to get them back in it.

FIVE-TRY DONCASTER PROGRESS

Pool Three concluded in style as Doncaster Knights progressed to the quarter- nals following their 37-28 win away against Leinster A.

The Donnybrook crowd got to witness an excellent match that saw the home side race into a 21-8 half-time lead before Doncaster’s comeback.

Joe Sproston had already grabbed a rst-half try and after a spell camped on the Leinster line Doncaster were awarded a penalty try, before full-back Paul Jarvis brought the Knights within a point.

Junior Bulumakau touched down on 70 minutes and Matt Challinor went in under the posts to seal the comeback, despite Sean McNulty’s late score for the Dublin side.

YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE INTO LAST EIGHT - FOR NOW

The all-Greene King IPA Championship xture between Yorkshire Carnegie and Jersey ended in a 26-19 victory for the Yorkshiremen, meaning both sides could progress into the last eight.

Chris Elder crossed early on for the hosts but Brendan Hope hit back for the Reds with a try, conversion and penalty.

Carnegie then hit three tries in the closing 12 minutes of the rst-half, through Harry Newborn, Stevie McColl and a second for Elder.

Carnegie were then left scoreless in the second-half as Cope added two more penalties for the visitors, with Jersey sealing a home quarter- nal to be played on Easter weekend.

TRAILFINDERS MAINTAIN PERFECT RECORD

It has been a memorable year in the pool stages for Ealing Trail nders, who kept their 100 per cent record in the competition intact with a 24-0 win away at Richmond.

The west-London side got o to a perfect start with a try for hooker Alun Walker giving them an early lead.

Richmond gave as good as they got in an even game, but Ealing’s defence proved too resolute and their second try was a ne individual e ort from Luke Daniels.

Two more scores followed from Peter Lydon and James Cordy Redden, with the Trail nders con rmed as the best quali er from the pool stages.

BRISTOL HIT TOP GEAR

Bristol enjoyed a wonderful Friday night in the British & Irish Cup as they ran in ten tries to defeat Cardi Blues 68-0.

Pat Lam made 14 changes to the side that beat Doncaster last week, but it didn’t show as the home side looked in the mood right from the o , with Dan Thomas grabbing the rst try of the night.

Nick Haining helped himself to a rst-half double and Jordan Williams also crossed, with Bristol securing a bonus point inside 20 minutes.

After the break it was more of the same - Ben Gompels scored his rst try for the club, Billy Searle grabbed a double and Alapati Leiua, Andy Uren and Joe Joyce also touched down.

ROTHERHAM TITANS FINISH WITH WIN

Rotherham Titans nished o the pool stages with a bonus-point win away at Connacht A, but haven’t made the quarter- nals as one of the three best runners-up.

The Titans pack dominated right from the o and their hard work was rewarded on seven minutes with a try for hooker Jonny Murphy.

After some resolute defence Will Thomas charged down a clearance kick to allow Jamie Cooke to dot down, and there was still time before the break for Drew Cheshire to register his fth try in as many games.

After half-time Jake Henry scored an excellent individual try, helping Rotherham to a 27-3 win and their rst back-to-back victories for the rst time since February 2016.

EXILES GRAB THIRD WIN

London Scottish followed up the previous week’s win over Yorkshire Carnegie with an impressive 27-22 victory away at Newport Dragons.

It took the London side a while to get going, conceding two tries in the rst three minutes before Ben Mosses dragged two defenders over the line to bring things back to 12-7.

The Welsh region surged into a 22-7 lead but from then on it was all Scottish, as Joe Luca-Smith touched down in the corner and Basil Strang shrugged o a defender to make it 22-17 with 45 minutes played.

Dan George then scored from a catch-and-drive, leaving Strang to round o the scoring with a late penalty to seal the result.

OPPOSITION PROFILE:

HARTPURY RFCHaving entered the English rugby pyramid as recently as 2004, Hartpury RFC has enjoyed a rapid rise to the Greene King IPA Championship, achieving nine promotions in 13 seasons.

Originally formed to provide Hartpury College students with the opportunity to experience adult league rugby, the club has developed a momentum which saw it top last season’s National One table with an unprecedented record - 30 wins, no defeats, only two bonus points missed and a points for/against differential of more than 900.

Director of Rugby, John Barnes, and Head Coach Mark Cornwell, who played almost 200 games for Gloucester, have continued with the philosophy that sees Hartpury seeking to bring an open and adventurous brand of rugby into the Championship. They follow in the footsteps of widely admired Welsh coach Allan Lewis and former DoR, Alan Martinovic, who subsequently joined Bristol Rugby in 2016.

Despite the presence of a few ‘old heads’, Hartpury is all about player development and there are some notable products of the institution now making their way at

the highest levels. Ross Moriarty became the second ‘old boy’ to pull on a British Lions jersey recently, following on from Wales’ Alex Cuthbert in 2013.

Jonny May is a regular presence in the England line-up, whilst players like Dan Robson (Wasps), Mike Haley (Sale Sharks), Ellis Genge (Leicester Tigers), Richard Barrington (Saracens) and a host of Gloucester Rugby players (with whom the college has a close working relationship) all came through the Hartpury system.

Hartpury came into the Championship season fully aware of the challenges ahead. The pre-season, perhaps more than any other in the club’s short history, saw an influx of new players to meet the demands of life in the second tier.

Prop forwards Dan Murphy and Rupert Harden both bring plenty of top-flight experience, building on the foundations laid around skipper Rhys Oakley (formerly of Yorkshire Carnegie), centre Luke Eves

Leon Brown

and flanker Mat Gilbert, in recent seasons.

Oakley is not the only Yorkshire connection in the Hartpury squad. Lock Joe Quinn was a former player at Emerald Headingley, as was attack coach Jonny Goodridge.

Results so far have been mixed, not helped by early

season injuries to stand-out players such as centre Steve Leonard and England Under-20 scrum-half Harry Randall. Both are expected to return in the next few weeks.

After an encouraging opening-day performance against league-leaders Bristol, in which Hartpury led at half-time, there

have been wins against Doncaster Knights, Rotherham (home and away) and London Scottish.

There was also a creditable 29-29 draw in the reverse fixture, when Yorkshire were the visitors to the Gillman’s Ground back in September. After racing into a commanding half-time lead, Hartpury were gradually pulled back by a smarter second-half Yorkshire performance and were grateful for Jacob Perry’s late penalty.

Those results have been supplemented by further bonus points and Hartpury remain confident that there is sufficient quality in the squad to see them safely through to another Championship season.
