Carlton Speak 2012 Carlton Public School E-Bulletin
Term 1 - Week 7 Thursday 8 March 2012
Dear Parents
“Successful schools start with healthy minds.” This statement is one of the central ideas behind the
Kidsmatter Primary framework that will be progressively
introduced at Carlton Public School from 2012. One of
the most important things the school will be doing as part
of the new School Plan 2012-2014 will be the
introduction of the Kidsmatter framework.
Five members of staff who make up part of our
Kidsmatter School Action Team attended the first
workshop this week to begin our implementation of this exciting new part of school life. In this newsletter I
have included a double page sheet that introduces you to Kidsmatter Primary and outlines the aims of the
approach and the four components that are addressed in it.
You will be hearing more about Kidsmatter over the coming weeks and months
and we want you to be a key partner in all our Kidsmatter actions and
activities as we make it a central part of how we do things at Carlton,
because:
Kidsmatter at Carlton!
So today I ask you to:
Read the Introducing Kidsmatter Primary newsletter included today.
Click on www.kidsmatterprimary.edu.au to see much, much more about what is involved in Kidsmatter
and some resources you can begin to use from today.
Have a quick look at the short introductory video on the home page!
Keep an eye out for all the Kidsmatter news that will be coming your way.
Choose how you can be involved with Kidsmatter with your children, your family, at home, at school and
begin to see how it will a central part of what happens at Carlton Public School
Leave I will be taking a short period of leave from the end of this week until Thursday 29 March. Miss Rasmussen will
be relieving Principal in this period. Miss Flowers will relieve as Deputy Principal and Mr Clark relieve as

The 2012 school photographs will be taken at Carlton Public School on Tuesday, 20 March, and
Wednesday, 21 March, 2012. This is much earlier than in previous years as many parents have
requested summer photos and we have been able to arrange it for the dates above. An explanation of
how to purchase school photographs is detailed on the back of the order envelope that was sent home
this week. All orders need to be made by Friday, 16 March, 2012. Any enquiries can be directed to
our office staff on 95873717.
P & C News Our next P&C meeting will be held in the staffroom this coming Tuesday, 13 March at 7.30pm. As a follow-on
from the last meeting we will be deciding on the focus for P&C fundraising in 2012. We will also be talking about
fundraising ideas in general and how these events might work for the remainder of the year. If you have some
good ideas or are just keen to support please come along.
P&C Day Wednesday, 7 March was P&C Day. While we didn’t celebrate formally at Carlton PS it is a time to acknowledge
the valuable contributions made in Public Schools throughout New South Wales by our Parents & Citizens
Associations. The P&C is full of dedicated volunteers who have an enthusiasm for community and a commitment
to building our children’s future. So thank you to P&C members past and present for playing an integral part in
Carlton PS and providing significant support to our school.
Easter Guessing Competition This week you would have received information about the Easter Guessing Competition. Next Wednesday, 14
March there will be a Mufti Day held at school. The P&C are asking that in exchange for coming out of uniform
the children donate Easter Eggs or chocolates. Please consider giving eggs that are nut free if possible and
something that you would be happy to receive back in a prize. Last year we had over 30 prizes and the winners
mostly were children attending Carlton PS.
You will also have noticed that there is a change to the way money and tickets are collected this year. Tickets
are not to be returned to the class teacher or to the office. Instead, a table will be set up in the playground
near the stairs to the Library before school, from Monday, 19 March until Friday 30 March, for ticket and
money collection. Please don’t send tickets in before this date. Additional ticket books will also be available at
this time. Tickets and money will need to be returned by Friday, 30 March and the raffle will be drawn at the

Pedlars’ Parade at school on Wednesday, 4 April. Please remember to fill in the contact details (full name and
phone number) on each ticket stub, for each person who buys a ticket. If the person buying the ticket attends
Carlton PS please write their class on the ticket stub.
If you have any baskets or the colourful boxes that are used for flower arrangements the P&C would like to
take them off your hands to package up the Easter Guessing Competition prizes. If you have any of these at
home, and they are in good condition, please send them in on the Mufti Day or when your tickets are returned.

each week to the class who has the most children banking each Tuesday. Who will be the winning class next
week?
A parent information afternoon to explain how School Banking operates will be held at 2.15pm next
Wednesday, 14 March in the staffroom. Anne-Marie Achenza. the school banking specialist, will be on hand to
answer any queries you may have.
If you require further information please leave your contact details at the school office and a School Banking
Coordinator will contact you.
Peer Mediation Training On Monday 5 March twenty Peer Mediators met in the Arabic room to learn how to help students try to solve
their problems.
We learnt how to help students solve their problems by listening to what each person has to say, maintaining
eye contact and not being distracted by what is happening around us. The first thing we do is make sure that
each student who comes to us with a problem promises to follow some rules.
When each student has told his or her side of the problem, we try to help them come up with a solution to help
them solve it. As Peer Mediators, we are not allowed to be judgemental nor take sides. We just have to try and
help students solve their problems in order to make our school a happy, safe place for all.
Take a look at some of 3/4E’s great adventure stories:
Wattlebub’s Adventure
The blue sky, the bright sun, a baby gumnut was born. Her name was Wattlebub. Whoosh! She fell into Willy
Wagtail’s nest.
Suddenly she woke. She fell right onto Mr Lizard’s back. Mr Lizard carried Wattlebub and some other gumnut
kids to visit Mr. Beetle.
Soon they reached Mr. Beetle, who was sweeping rocks away from his doorway. Plop, the gumnut kids fell off
Mr. Lizard’s back and dusted themselves off. They talked to Mr Beetle. Mr Beetle told them that Mr Toadeye
had a message. They all raced off to find Mr Toadeye.
It felt like ages but the kids finally found Mr Toadeye. They all sat in the reeds while Mr Toadeye told them
the message.
Suddenly the kids jumped up and ran to the big door near a mushroom. But as they came to the door, the Bad
Banksia man smashed through the door! He chased the gumnut kids to the mushroom, which they hid under.
After a while they came out and realized they were hiding from nothing. It was just a story. They all lived
happily ever after!!

The Great Chase!
One day in the Australian bush a nut called Frilly was telling a story to his children.
Meanwhile, the Banksia Man was commanded to get Frilly and his family. So the Banksia Man set off.
Frilly was about to start a new story, when the Banksia Man saw them. Frilly saw him first and asked his
children to run so they did. Then he sped away to catch up. The chase was on!
They ran and ran until they couldn’t run anymore. The Banksia man was getting closer every minute. They were
running out of energy when they saw a motorcycle up ahead, so they ran with all their might until they reached
the motorcycle. They hopped on the motorcycle quickly and rode away.
Meanwhile the Banksia Man was so tired he rested under a hollow tree for a few minutes and then got going
again. Frilly and his children saw Mr Beetle sweeping his house lazily. They asked Mr Beetle if they could borrow
his car and to set a trap, so they borrowed his car.
The Banksia Man came by and asked had he seen Frilly and his children. Mr Beetle said he hadn’t so he went off,
but just then he stepped on a light patch of grass and fell in. It was the trap made by Mr Beetle.
They were saved!

The Two Gumnuts
Once upon a time two gumnut babies, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, were in a nest. They were looking down when
Snugglepot saw a gumnut car and thought they could ride in it.
Snugglepot and Cuddlepie were having so much fun that they didn’t see the banksia man. The banksia man
chased and chased and chased them. Suddenly one of the wheels came off.
Immediately they found a shiny blue beetle who was helpful. He gave them a gumnut bicycle. Soon the banksia
man, exhausted, fell on a trolley and was taken to the sea.
But Snugglepot and Cuddlepie found that they were lost. Surprisingly, it was a calm night. They felt really
scared until they heard a croak. It was Mr Toad.
Mr Toad led them to his friend, Mr Lizard. Mr Lizard took them home.
In the end, it became an exciting story to tell their friends.

Look at what’s happening in our Stage 3 classes! Stage 3 students are learning all about rainforests this term and as a result have created some fabulous
drawings and paintings. They have also learnt many interested facts about
rainforests. These facts have come from Jason; Curtis; Isable; Lara; Mikayla
Did you know:
6-7% of the world is covered in rainforests
50% of the world’s animal population lives in rainforests
Each minute, approximately 50 hectares of rainforest land is destroyed
There are many layers in a rainforest including: forest floor;
understorey; canopy and the emergent layer
The largest rainforest is the Amazon

Some more rainforest facts…
Rainforests are one of the major biomes of the world. A biome is a large area of distinctive plant and animal
groups that adapt to that physical environment.
Most people think of a rainforest as being a warm and humid place, but this is not always true. There are
actually two types of rainforests. One is known as a tropical rainforest, where the climate is warm and humid.
The other is known as a temperate rainforest, where it is very wet and the climate is cooler.
Tropical rainforests are found close to the Equator and can receive from 2000 to 10 000mm of rain which is
evenly distributed throughout the year. The average temperature ranges from about 25 degrees to 30 degrees
all year round.
Temperate rainforests are found along the western coasts of some countries in temperate zones. They receive
at least 2000 to 3000mm of rain each year but this can be higher. The temperature is cooler than a tropical
rainforest rarely going over 25 degrees.
Rainforests have four layers: the emergent layer which is only found in a tropical rainforest; the canopy layer
which consists of tall trees; the understorey layer which is below the canopy; and the forest floor which is dark
with lots of leaves, twigs and logs.

World Education Games
World Maths Day started on Tuesday 6 March at 9:00am. On Wednesday 7 March, Ms Archer (4A) and Ms
Morrison (2/3M) were lucky enough to go to the Australian Technology Park, Redfern to compete in the World
Maths Day Event.
When we arrived we ate our recess sitting on the modern, stylish, wooden benches.
After that we went inside the centre but we had to wait a while so we played relay games in teams. It was fun.
Soon it was Carlton Public School’s turn to do Mathletics. We were split into groups and we entered the warm up
zone.
Next it was our turn to enter the competition arena. Campsie Public School made a walkway and clapped us in.
There were incredible, extreme Samsung Galaxy tubs! The walls of the arena were covered with sparkly silver
stars. We sat at small round work stations on comfy round seats. There was cool music playing loudly and
cameramen filming the event.
After playing Mathletics Live for an hour the winners were asked to stand up. Vanessa and Dennis were winners
at the event and Ohm and Thomas were winners back at school.
Finally we played in the park and came back to school safely. It was a fabulous day.

Stage 1 Rugby Clinic
Last Tuesday the Stage 1 students were involved in a fun rugby skills clinic. One student, who was unable to
participate in the sessions due to an injury, was asked if she’d like to take the camera to take some photos of
the event. Her name is Holly and she had a wonderful time taking snapshots of her peers during the session.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Congratulations to the wonderful readers who completed the 2011 Premier’s Reading Challenge, as part of the
biggest children’s book club in Australia.
Welcome to the 2012 challenge which runs from 5 March to 1 September. Books read from 1 September 2011
can also count towards the 2012 challenge.
Our school library is a great supporter of the Premier’s Reading Challenge and Ms Phillips and Mrs Kirman will be
purchasing extra PRC books this year to make book selection easier. Also, with the Teacher Librarian’s
assistance, students can use the computers in the library during lunch time to browse PRC lists and books
available.
The challenge website is:
www.schools.nsw.edu.au/premiersreadingchallenge
Students register by using their DET username and password to log on and then start their online student
reading record.
Students who complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge will receive a PRC Certificate and appear on the PRC
Honour Roll. Those who complete the challenge for four years will receive a gold certificate. Rules, booklists and
privacy information about the certificate and Honour Roll can be read on the website.
Happy reading and take up the challenge!
