We start 2013 with our first edition of our new look newsletter; inside you can find a host of information including our upcoming under 5’s play activities and Information about courses which offer personal and development opportunities. To help kick start a healthy New Year we have a number of activities and courses that help promote living a healthy lifestyle. On Wednesdays 1:30-2:30pm at Harraby Community Centre get involved with our free Stay and Play Lets Get Moving sessions for under 5’s. Cook 4 Life is a Five week course that offers parents and carers a hands on opportunity to learn the skills needed to prepare healthy meals for the family from basic ingredients. Let’s Get Healthy with HENRY is an 8 week course for parents and carers of children up to the age of 5 years. The course is fun and informal, exploring together what makes a healthy family lifestyle and getting support to deal with some of the challenges along the way. A warm winter welcome to our first Newsletter of 2013.We start 2013 with our first edition of our new look newsletter; inside you can find a host of information including our upcoming under 5’s play activities and Information about courses which offer personal and development opportunities.

To help kick start a healthy New Year we have a number of activities and courses that help promote living a healthy lifestyle.

Stay and Play-Let’s get ExploringThis session lets children explore the world around them in a fun way. Use magnets, magnifying glasses, ice, maps, natural play and lots more.

Toy libraryWe have a whole range of toys and games where you can play with the toys and take any toy home for FREE! Come and borrow some fantastic toys with your under 5’s.

Stay and Play Let’s Get MovingIs physical movement play for your baby or toddler that enables them to develop in a variety of ways. A baby exercise session is included and lots of opportunities to crawl, roll and play with a wide selection of physical play equipment.

Stay and Play Let’s get PlayingJoin in a wide variety of activities with your child ranging from games, dressing up, role play, animals, small world, puzzles and lots more.

Stay and Play Let’s Get SingingThis is a lively fun session which includes songs, musical instruments and lots of rhymes to encourage children to develop early language skills.

Stay and Play- Let’s get Story TellingHave fun with stories, puppets and creative activities. Let’s Get Story Telling helps children to develop their language and literacy skills at any stage. Each week we tell a new story and enjoy fun activities around the theme.

Stay and Play- Saturday ClubThis fun session runs once a month. Lots of games and craft activities available for children up to 13 years old.

Weekend Dads ActivitiesEvery Saturday between 10am and 11am we will be offering soft play sessions for dads with children under 5 at Whale of a Time Soft Play. Harraby Community Centre, Edgehill Road Carlisle for any Dads, Male Carers and their Children.

Thursday Club - Learn new physical skills with a specialist tutor. Helping children of all abilities develop their physical skills and increasing their confidence through a range of fun games and activities. Sessions for children with additional needs aged 4-10 and their immediate family, will be running weekly at the Sands Centre Carlisle 5.00 – 6.30 Starting back after Christmas 10 January until 21 March term time only (not on 14 Feb). We are normally in the main hall but on the following dates we are in the squash court 21 feb, 7 and 14 March.

Family Swimming Sessions - Free swimming sessions are available for children 10 years and under with additional needs and their immediate family. Whilst a lifeguard will be present at each session children must be supervised. Children under 4 year’s ratio 1-1 children under 8 years 2 – 1. Fox cubs - Soft play session for children aged 0-5 with additional needs and their immediate family runs on the 2 Tuesday of the month at Harraby Community Centre, 10.45 -11.45. Activities for Children with Additional NeedsThe sessions are for children with additional needs under 10 years of age and their families

Rainy Days Play- A free six week course for parents, grandparents and carers. Discover and experience for yourself how babies and young children learn and ways you can enhance their everyday play and learning experiences – without it costing you a fortune! Crèche available.

Top Tips and Toddlers - Is a 4 week course looking at sleeping problems, potty training, establishing routines, and feeding problems. The course material is tailored to suit the needs of the group and is delivered with Nursery Nurses from health. It’s open to all with children under the age of 3.

Nurturing Programme - Children are rewarding, stimulating and fun, but looking after them can be stressful and challenging. The Nurturing Programme helps deal with those challenges so you have a calmer, happier family life

My Life - This 6 week course is accredited through the Open College Network and leads to an Entry Level 3 qualification. It offers parents and carers an opportunity to develop assertiveness and decision making skills, build self confidence and express thoughts and feelings honestly.

Cook 4 Life - Let’s get cooking is a fun and enjoyable opportunity for families to experience cooking sessions. On this course learn how to prepare healthy food from basic ingredients and develop the skills and knowledge to do so. The course runs for 5 weeks with limited Crèche places available.

Let’s Get Healthy with HENRY - This 8-week programme has been designed to cover the key lifestyle areas with groups of parents and carers. Each session begins with family time and then young children are cared for while parents/carers explore the topic of the week. Participants receive the HENRY toolkit and supporting materials.

Escape Parenting Course - A free 8 week evening parenting course for parents / carers with children aged 11 – 14 years dealing with issues as your child becomes a teenager. Contact Becs for more information.

Workclub - If you would you like to know more about how to write a CV, fill in an application form or have more confidence during an interview. We can support you at our drop in Wednesday’s 10 -11am. No Crèche available.

Citizenship - Is an 8 week course that looks at Community Development and how you can affect what happens in your local community.

Adult Education - Numeracy - This course gives you the opportunity to work towards a recognized Level 1 or 2 national qualification equivalent to a GCSE in Numeracy. Delivered over 16 weeks this course allows you to learn new skills. Running for 16 weeks with breaks over half term.

PCAG – Parents Carers Advisory Group Have you ever wondered how parents/carers have their say in Carlisle South Sure Start Children’s Centre? Do you know who or what the P.C.A.G is? The P.C.A.G (Parents Carers Advisory Group) represents, parents like you in the Carlisle South Sure Start Children’s Centres areas. Get in touch if you would like to be involved or find out more?

Recovery Toolkit - Is a free 12 week programme for women who have experienced domestic abuse/ violence. The course is designed to assist you in developing positive lifestyles, coping strategies, build self esteem and feel more confident. The course will run for two hour a weekly with limited Crèche places available.

Speakeasy - Is an 8 weeks course for parents to help them feel more comfortable talking to their children about growing up. SPEAKEASY is Fun, Informative and Useful for parents /carers with children of all ages.

ESOL PCAG – Parents Carers Advisory Group - A free English course for Speakers of other languages which can be entered at various levels. Contact Karen Dexter on 01228 530360 for further information on dates, times and venues.
