A YeAr in review

2018-19

Message from the DeanAs I look back at the past year, I am amazed at what we have accomplished together. Together, we developed a new strategic plan, reflecting our goals for effecting transformational learning, knowledge creation and dissemination, community engagement, and merging business excellence with social responsibility.

Our global accreditation by AACSB International was successfully extended for another five years. We were awarded the EFMD Global Network BSIS label for our successful completion of the Business School Impact study, which lauded our impact on our community.

We have watched the new Nicol Building, the future home of the Sprott School of Business, rise from the ground as construction continues. Upon completion, the Nicol Building will provide our students, faculty, staff and greater community with formal and informal collaborative learning and gathering spaces to further strengthen our knowledge and our connections.

Our students continue to exemplify academic excellence, leadership, and good business. Three of our Master of Accounting students placed in the top one percent of the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) common final exam. Our Sprott Competes case competition teams had another successful season. We welcomed over 160 Ottawa-area high school students to our campus for the Sprott Secondary School Business Challenge. Sprott students braved the cold winter for Five Days for the Homeless, raising funds to support Ottawa’s youth. Our students once again travelled to Tanzania, where they worked in interdisciplinary student teams to address local, community challenges, and our alumni gave back to the community through our Sprott Serves initiative.

We continued our tradition of celebrating our students, alumni and community partners at our annual Business Banquet, where this year we announced the winners of our first Sprott Alumni Awards. A proud congratulations again to our fantastic alumni, Steven Murphy, Jane Porter and Ben Ryan who truly exemplify Sprott as the place for tomorrow’s socially conscious, global-minded and success-driven difference makers.

Sprott prides itself on its culture of collaborative, interdisciplinary and global research. In 2018, our faculty produced 165 intellectual contributions, including 67 journal publications and 98 books, chapters, proceedings and presentations.

I extend my sincere thanks to our community of faculty, staff, alumni, students, Advisory Board members and stakeholders for all you’ve done, and all you continue to do, to contribute to the community of the Sprott School of Business.

Linda Schweitzer Interim Dean

Confirming Business Excellence: Global Accreditation ExtendedFollowing a multi-year continuous improvement process, AACSB International extended its accreditation of Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business for another five years.

During the three-day visit by the AACSB peer review team in October, the team met with more than 100 representatives of students, faculty, staff, alumni, Sprott Advisory Board members and Carleton University executives. In their recommendation for the extension of accreditation, the team recognized the Sprott School for its student-oriented culture. They also noted many of Sprott’s student experience opportunities, such as the From Buckets to Rain Barrels projects in Tanzania, the Sprott Competes case competition program, the Sprott Student Investment Fund, and the many required courses that include experiential learning.

AACSB is the longest-serving global accrediting body for business schools. AACSB accreditation has been earned by only 28 per cent of business schools in Canada and five per cent of the world’s business schools offering degrees at the bachelor level and higher.

Measuring our Impact with BSISThe Sprott School of Business completed a comprehensive assessment of the school’s impact through EFMD’s Business School Impact System (BSIS), a process that Sprott can apply to measure our impact on a continuous basis. The assessment focused on the school’s impact in the Eastern Ontario region during the 2017-18 academic year, which was significant.

. Sprott contributed $224 million to the Eastern Ontario region

. 651 Sprott graduates entered the job market

. 30 per cent of international students remained in the region after graduation

. 294 Sprott students participated in experiential learning opportunities with local organizations

. More than 5,000 Sprott alumni are working in the region

. 22 new firms that created 350 jobs were founded by alumni or supported by the entrepreneurship ecosystem over the past five years

Dana Brown Appointed Dean of the Sprott School of BusinessIn February, Carleton University President Benoit-Antoine Bacon and Provost Jerry Tomberlin announced the appointment of Dana Brown as Dean of the Sprott School of Business, commencing July 1, 2019 for a five-year term.

Dana joins Sprott from De Monfort University in the United Kingdom, where she served as Pro Vice Chancellor (Enterprise) and Dean of the Leicester Castle Business School. Previously, she was Director of the MBA program at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School.

“I am delighted to be joining the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University, and I look forward to working with colleagues to take the School into its next phase of success. The amount of talent and level of ambition at Carleton presents an exciting opportunity to further develop an innovative approach to business education and to grow Sprott’s impact locally and globally.” – Dana Brown

Sprott Good BusinessThis year, the Sprott School of Business launched a campaign to shift the narrative of what it means to study business and the impact one can have by doing so. Developed by Banfield Agency, the Sprott “Good Business” campaign illustrated that Sprott’s comprehensive approach to business education provides students with the foundation they need to find success and create positive change.

The campaign featured stories of alumni who are making a difference in the world. From Alexis Ashworth (MBA/13), who is connecting families in need with affordable home ownership as President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa; to Jane Porter (BIB/07) who works full-time as sustainability consultant and is building communities of social innovators in her spare time; to Sarah McRae (BIB/15), who is reframing the migrant crisis in Europe by supporting migrant-led innovation. In their stories, alumni also reflected on how their experiences at Sprott shaped their future paths.

A Gateway to the CommunityNICOL BUILDINg RISINg Since breaking ground in June 2018, there has been significant progress in the construction of the Nicol Building – the future home of the Sprott School of Business. The 115,000 square-foot facility will deliver an inspiring and collaborative learning environment in which students, faculty, business and the community can work together to find creative solutions to the challenges facing business and society.

During the fall, most of the work took place underground and by December, the building footings were in place, the foundation was laid, the main utilities connections were ready, a direct connection to Carleton’s tunnel system was created, and the tower crane was assembled. Over the winter and spring, the Carleton community watched the Nicol Building rise steadily from the ground as the concrete structure was poured by one level a month. By the end of April 2019, the structure stood four-levels above ground.

The Nicol Building is the first institutional building in the Ottawa region to use the void concrete slab system, manufactured by BubbleDeck North America LLC. This innovative system significantly reduces the weight of the building and promotes sustainability by replacing typical, cast-in place concrete slab with frames of recycled plastic bubbles over which concrete is poured. A total of 11,300 bubbles of 225mm diameter were used, displacing close to 163 tons of concrete.

aDvaNCEMENT UPDaTEThe Sprott School of Business is grateful to the individuals and organizations who support our students, programs and initiatives. The following are a few examples of the generous support received in 2018-19.

Supporting Future EntrepreneursHusband and wife, Dave Roberts and Patricia Dionne, are Ottawa entrepreneurs who, between them, run an aesthetics studio, a hot-air balloon company and a sports bar. They recently established a bursary in their wills to support a second-year student in financial need, who demonstrates an entrepreneurial spirit and may continue to employ people from the region. Although Dave and Patricia have not had a personal connection to Carleton, they chose the Sprott School of Business for its solid reputation in the community.

alterna Establishes Scholarships for Socially-Minded Business StudentsIn 2019-20, two new scholarships will be available to undergraduate students in the Sprott School of Business thanks to the generosity of the Alterna Financial Group. Alterna’s gift of $50,000, matched by Carleton University, will be permanently endowed to create the Alterna Savings Scholarship and the Alterna Bank Scholarship. Each scholarship will be awarded annually in the amount of $2,000 to an undergraduate student enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at Sprott. Preference will be given to students involved in Enactus Carleton, a student organization dedicated to harnessing the power of entrepreneurship to create positive change in the community.

Costco Canada Supports Students in Need from the National Capital RegionCostco Canada is helping students from the Ottawa area access a university education through the establishment of the Costco Bursary in Business. Costco’s gift of $25,000 was matched by Carleton University to create an endowed bursary that will help offset the costs of university for undergraduate students entering a full-time degree program at the Sprott School of Business from a high school in the National Capital Region.
