The Social Service Department, comprised of Amanda Jaramillo-Ayon and Emily Huss, is respon-sible for the psychosocial aspects of resident care.

Beginning with the resident’s ad-mission, the social worker helps the resident adjust to the facility routine and environment.

Information about Advanced Directives, including “Power of Attorney for Health Care Deci-sions”, “Living Will”, and “Do Not Resuscitate” is provided to the new resident. The Director of So-cial Services is also a Notary Public and can assist in notarizing forms.

The Social Service Department is able to provide counseling to residents and family members in dealing with feelings about place-ment, death and dying, and other emotional, mental, environmental or physical limitations. A referral to a counseling service is also avail-able. A Family and Community Education Event takes place on the second Tuesday of every month at 10:00AM in the Main Lounge. All residents and family members, interested in learning more about education topics, are invited to attend.

Each resident’s problems are ad-dressed in a care plan, with social service involvement. Specifi c goals

demonstrated love (taking the role of the lowest servant) by washing his disciples dirty feet.

What an amazing story. It doesn’t take much to imagine what happened that night. Luke’s gospel said that the disciples were arguing among

themselves who was the greatest (Luke 22:24). They need-ed a lesson on true greatness. Because Jesus knew who he was he didn’t have any trouble serv-ing others. He had nothing to prove.

I believe that each of us is here for a reason: that we might know God and that we might put God’s love in action. We are called to serve.

What do you know? Why not talk about a time you were privileged to serve others.

A note from Pastor LambertsWhen something asks me the question, “What do you know?” I feel frustrated. What do they want to know that I know? I want to say, “How much time do you have?”

We all know quite a bit, don’t we? Every person can tell you a lot if you have the time to listen and hear their story. It is interesting to hear those stories at Calvin. Many times they will surprise you with what they have done and ex-perienced.

Maybe instead of saying “what do you know?” we should ask, “tell me a story about your-self.” I want to know.

Jesus knew “that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God…(John 13:3).” Therefore, Jesus

strong experience in long-term care administration, and the ease with which the transition was be-ginning. Carl thanked everyone for the very warm welcome they have experienced and his com-mitment to the future of Calvin Community. Calvin Community has been blessed by both of these men.

Farewell Mark, and welcome Carl. May your futures be bright.

President’s Dinner: Tradition and TransitionFollowing Calvin Community’s tradition, our Annual President’s Dinner, which raises funds for our Good Samaritan Fund, was held October 18, 2018. 100 guests enjoyed a delicious Mexican fare, great conversation, and entertain-ment from Irish folk-singing duo, Switchback. Nearly $12,985.00 was raised.

This year the President’s Dinner was made even more special in that it was the last President’s Dinner at which Mark Teigland, Calvin’s retiring President and CEO for the last 10 years, would preside. In his retirement remarks, Mark acknowledged the support

of his wife, Patrice, and the won-derful contributions of Calvin’s staff and a cadre of board mem-bers and volunteers.

While this may have been Mark’s last President’s Dinner, it also represented the start of a new chapter in Calvin’s 54-year history and the beginning of a transition from Mark to Calvin’s new Presi-dent and CEO, Carl Koedam. As the outgoing President and CEO, Mark welcomed new Calvin President and CEO, Carl Koedam, and his wife Jenessa.

In introducing Carl and Jen-essa, Mark highlighted their very

checking patients and families in to the Surgical Department. Betty has served in this role for 24 years and finds it challenging and sometimes stressful as she speaks with doctors, nurses, patients, and families. Betty also volunteers, for over 20 years, in the Westminster Presbyterian Church office inputting attendance, manning the telephone, and filling in as the receptionist during office meetings.

In addition to all of her volunteerism in the community, Betty volunteers three hours per week in the Calvin Community Coffee Shop greeting and serving customers. Stop by the Coffee Shop on Monday afternoons between 1:00 and 4:00 to say hello to Betty Gibson!
