map-lab was retained by Silverman Trykowski As-sociates (STA) to develop a comprehensive study for the Caritas Christi Health Care (CCHC) organi-zation. Using the design standards established by STA at the Caritas St. Elizabeth’s hospital, map-lab set forth a process of identifying and prioritizing projects at each of the six hospitals in order to unify the overall visual identity of CCHC.

STA and map-lab visited each campus to review the existing conditions and evaluate the “curb appeal”, wayfinding, and overall images of the hos-pital, which helped map-lab define projects that

would create a warm and healing environment.

Budgets were created for each project, grouped together by campus, and presented to each hos-pital director. map-lab and STA then presented a comprehensive report to CCHC identifying each project for each particular campus, which en-abled the organization to plan for these projects in its multiple capital budgets.

CARITAS HOLY FAMILY HOSPITAL . 70 East Street Methuen, MA 01844

C existing front desk

The approach to the main lobby of Caritas Holy Family Hospital (A) is well indicated, however not all patients and visitors use this as their primary entry. A significant number of visitors will use the rear entry to the facility (E), by the new Operating Suites, as it is a slightly more direct route to the current Admitting area and is closer to the additional parking. This entry is poorly indicated both at the approach and at the entry (F), utilizes painted footprints on the ground to indicate path, has a canopy in need of replacement, and lacks the first impression image of Caritas. We recommend de-emphasizing this approach, so that the main entry is the primary entry. The hospital is initiating parking policies that would encourage parking along the front of the building to encourage use of the main entry. We recommend the relocation of the Patient Services function of Admitting to an area adjacent to the Main Lobby recently vacated by a coffee shop. The main lobby (B, C, D) should be renovated to reflect the Caritas standards. The upgrade design would connect the lobby to the elevator, and to the ground floor corridor, creating a strong connection between the lobby and the ground floor Admitting area. We also recommend corridor upgrades to the Caritas standard along the primary paths to key destinations. New exterior signage is proposed to direct people to the new entry, while reflecting the Caritas identity. We propose a new awning at the main entry in lieu of the existing canopy enclosure for consistency between the entries.
