Veteran Honored With Helicopter Flight Over Dickinson

It's not unusual to see Dickinson's Valley Med Flight Team in the skies. But today, the pilot had a special guest on board. It was just another morning for Dickinson resident George Ott. "I surely wasn't scared of it," said Ott, World War II veteran.

Though onlookers couldn't believe the 96-year-old would be boarding a helicopter for flight. "I would've never thought that at 96 he would going up in a helicopter," said Laura Shirek, Ott's daughter. And that she would be on board alongside her father. "It was a nice day for company," Ott said.

Dickinson's Valley Med Flight wanted to thank the veteran for his time in the service. They made sure he got on board. "We took a Hoyer Lift and lifted him onto our stretcher and then put the stretcher into the helicopter," said Deann Schaefer, flight nurse at Valley Med Flight.

Perhaps it was Ott's experience during World War II that prepared him so well for the day's journey. "The fortress had four engines and they carried about two and a half tons of bombs," Ott said.

Ott was held as a prisoner of war after bailing out of his aircraft during a mission in Germany. His family saved the letters his brother received saying he was missing in action. From interviews on camera and on paper, his family preserves his accomplishments. He's the one of the oldest veterans at St. Luke's Home.

"He's a very special person to have at our facility," said Lana Wanner, resident care manager at St. Luke's Home. The kind of person who deserves a special day. The pilot made sure to fly over Dickinson's new Veterans Memorial for Ott to see.

Park Avenue VillaAs 2015 comes to a close, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for another wonderful year at PAV. We have seen changes to our meals. A new menu options that includes an a la carte menu and our tenant’s favorite, a lettuce salad with fresh vegetables is served before the noon meal. During the warm summer months we started a steak fry. We even recruited a tenant to assist with grilling. We have also made a few changes to our activity program to help keep our tenants active and having fun while interacting with their friends. Our front door seems to always be opening to the many friends and families that come to visit. It is heartwarming to see and listen to all the new memories that were created as families honoring their loved ones by birthday parties, gatherings for holiday celebrations or just simply visiting throughout the year.PAV has welcomed many new tenants who soon became our friends and a part of our PAV family. They each brought their own life stories and treasures. Along with each new tenant, we welcomed their family and loved ones. Unfortunately we also had to say good-bye to some of our dear tenants. Their smile and uniqueness is forever carried in our hearts.PAV has also been very fortunate to have dedicated and caring staff. I truly appreciate each of them and the skills and compassion that they bring to PAV.So as we welcome the New Year, 2016, I want to take the moment to wish each of you a Joyous and Peace-Filled New Year that is overflowing with many new memories to cherish! Happy New Year,

Beth

Spreading Christmas JoyChristmas is the time of year when we celebrate the birth of Christ and share quality time with our families and friends. We would like to thank the many groups who have come to carol for the residents and sharing the holiday spirit with them. Thank you to Hillside Baptist Church volunteers for making the facility feel festive by decorating and Harold and Marge Sungren, Church of God for leading the Christmas Eve service for the residents and their families.Children seem to brighten the holidays even more, and the students of Lincoln Elementary did just that. Students from the fifth grade classes, with the help of their music teachers caroled for the residents. The students were the bearers of gifts from the more than 400 students at Lincoln Elementary. St. Joseph’s Church Christian Mothers, Pat Eckes and Simioniw

Family Chiropractic Staff also shared gifts with the residents. Diane & Leo Sand, who provided the musical entertainment for the Christmas party, played “Jingle Bells,” as Santa (Kirk Roll) with his festive personality and Santa bag in hand entered the room. Santa, The Catholic Daughters and St. Luke’s staff distributed the presents to the residents and all joined in singing Christmas carols.

St. Luke’s Wishes Paulette Praus Best Wishes on Her RetirementOn October 30, St. Luke’s Home wished a dedicated employee best wishes on her retirement. Paulette Praus worked at St. Luke’s for 34 years. While at St. Luke’s, she wore a few different hats. Paulette began in Laundry then transferred to Housekeeping. Paulette later worked in Purchasing where she worked until her retirement. When asked, Paulette said the first thing she will do to enjoy her retirement, is deep clean and organize her house for an upcoming family reunion next summer. She will also be attending her granddaughter’s dance competitions. Thank you Paulette for your thirty four years of dedicated service to St. Luke’s Home. Enjoy your much deserved retirement!

ChristmasOpen HouseThe aroma of apple cider and the sound of Christmas carols filled the halls during our Christmas Open House on December 13. The event was held to welcome family and friends, and to raise funds to make our courtyard doors handicap-accessible. A variety of themed baskets which were donated by local businesses and St. Luke’s Staff and Board of Directors were raffled. The bake sale table was filled with home-made candies, sweets and bread. The pinecone reindeer and owl ornaments made by the residents during their craft club were a hit. Retired St. Luke’s staff returned to volunteer for the event along with board members and friends of St. Luke’s. We would like to thank everyone for your support. We made our goal to make our doors handicap-accessible!
