STEWART HOUSE CONTEXT

Today Stewart House is a Centre of Excellence for Social and Emotional Wellbeing

Funding is provided through National Partnerships for a focus on Australian and Torres Strait Islander cultural content

A 2 week program to promote self esteem & resiliencerecognition & regulation of emotionsLocal Guringai language and culture

NEW AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM AND NSW BOARD OF STUDIES REQUIREMENTS

Cross curriculum priorities from the new Australian Curriculum provide learning that gives special attention to contemporary issues students will face in their lives including a special emphasis on Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander Cultures and Histories.

This lesson content promotes intercultural understanding, difference and diversity that develops knowledge, skills and dispositions that apply across general learning areas of the new Australian Curriculum and general capabilities added by the NSW Board of Studies.

JUSTIFICATION FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING

The NSW Syllabus’ for the Australian Curriculum: Learning Across the Curriculum K-6 pgs 26

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have diverse cultures, social structures and a history of unique, complex knowledge systems. Students learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as the world’s oldest continuous cultures. This knowledge and understanding will deepen and enable students’ capacity to participate in the ongoing development of a just and equitable Australian society that genuinely reconciles with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”

Stewart House is located on Guringai country

A Guringai Aboriginal Education Officer is employed to share knowledge of local traditions and cultural customs

National Partnerships funding for 2013 allocated to implement Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teaching and learning programmes
