Did you know this about Halifax?

Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia. It hosts the largest population east of Quebec City – 403,000 people at last count.

Halifax has been around for a long time. It was founded in 1749 by Honorable Edward Cornwallis of England.

The Halifax Explosion in 1917 was the world’s largest man-made explosion prior to Hiroshima. About 2000 people were killed and 9000 injured when the SS Mont Blanc, a French cargo ship loaded with wartime explosives collided with an empty Norwegian ship. It caught fire and 25 minutes later exploded. A tsunami and pressure wave also occurred and caused considerable damage.

The Dalhousie Gazette, established in 1868, is the longest running college newspaper in Canada.

The first public library in Canada was Halifax’s Citizens’ Free Library, established in 1864.

One in every five Canadians is related to someone who passed through Halifax’s Pier 21.

The first newspaper in English Canada was the Halifax Gazette, initially published on March 23, 1752 by John Bushell.

Canada’s first covered ice rink was opened on January 3, 1863 in the Public Gardens.

Canada’s last piracy trial took place in Halifax in 1844. Four crew members of the British vessel Saladin were the last people hanged as pirates in Canadian history.

There are more pubs per capita than any other city in Canada.

Appointment of

New Registrar

April 1, 2015

Council is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr.

Keith Morley as Registrar of The Royal College of Dentists

of Canada effective Wednesday, April 1, 2015.

The membership continues to grow, along with the solid

reputation of the College in the professional and regulato-

ry community. As we continue to evolve, the skills of the

Registrar will be critical in navigating the College through a

rapidly changing political, professional and regulatory envi-

ronment that will require proactive and strategic stakehold-

er engagement to foster constructive dialogues.

Dr. Morley brings the experience and expertise to meet

these challenges through a proven record of operational

leadership, strategy development, financial and relation-

ship management.

He is a graduate of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of

Manitoba, and completed his pediatric dental residency at

the University of Toronto and Hospital for Sick Children in

Toronto.

In addition, Keith recently completed the 18-month Execu-

tive Masters of Business Administration Program at the Kel-

logg Schulich and Kellogg Northwestern Schools of Man-

agement in Toronto and Chicago respectively. He obtained

his joint MBA degree from these institutions in December

2013.

Keith has had a distinguished career, initially with the Ca-

nadian Armed Forces Dental Services, from which he was

honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel,

and more recently in private practice in Pediatric Dentistry.

He has held progressively senior leadership positions with-

in organized dentistry in Canada and the United States, cul-

minating with being the only Canadian to have served as

President of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

He also has been active in health care with appointments

Dr. Keith Morley as Chief of Dentistry and Deputy Chief of Surgery at the

Royal Victoria Hospital Regional Health Centre in Barrie,

Ontario. In addition, Keith has been an active Fellow of The

Royal College of Dentists of Canada holding the following

positions: Examiner, Pediatric Dentistry (1987-1993), Chief

Examiner, Pediatric Dentistry (1994-1999), and elected

Council member, Pediatric Dentistry (2002-2004).

Keith’s solid experience comes with a strong belief in the

role of regulatory bodies to serve and protect the public

interest. Given his enthusiasm for the College, he is eager

to begin collaborating with the Council, staff and mem-

bers with a view to delivering results which promote the

high standards of practice of the recognized dental spe-

cialties by examining qualified candidates for admission to

Fellowship, and by working with stakeholders to establish

standards for dental specialty education, practice and cer-

tification. Over the coming weeks, he will begin to reach

out to introduce himself and will take advantage of various

opportunities to meet with and learn more about College

members.

As the College moves forward with a new Registrar, a spe-

cial thank you must be expressed to Garnet Packota who

has been our Acting Registrar and, as always, has demon-

strated his unwavering commitment to professional ex-

cellence and to the College. I know everyone joins me in

expressing our deep appreciation for Garnet’s efforts and

achievements.

The Executive leadership of the College is embarking upon

a very exciting new phase of strategic growth and develop-

ment. Given Keith’s past leadership experience, the Exec-

utive believes there is a great deal that we will be able to

accomplish together to ensure our members and the public

are well-served. Please join us and the Council in extending

your full support and a very warm College welcome to Keith

Morley.

CELEBRATING ALL THAT IS NOVA SCOTIA

CAPD-ACDP is thrilled to feature the photographs of Dr. Peter Pronych, an Honourary Member of the Academy and a former President (1989-1992). In Peter’s own words…

I began pursuing many put-off activities such as creating and producing photographic DVD’s, transferring vinyl records to CD’s and showing automobiles, in addition to being a grandfather, after a very busy and active career in the practice and teaching of Pediatric Dentistry, serving in different capacities in CAPD, as a short term consultant with WHO in the Middle East and authoring four books (two printed versions and two digital iBooks) dealing with the true story of the life and times of ‘Painless Parker, Dentist and Showman.’
