Happy New Year wishes to all CaribDA
members and their families.
2017 is set to be a year of various changes and
difficulties, the continuing low oil price in
particular deepening the recession in some
Caribbean countries, but there is also hope that
improvements to the world economy will be
confirmed to be underway.
Shortly after our last newsletter, unfortunately a
full hurricane hit Haiti causing considerable
devastation. CaribDA’s Humanitarian
Committee has responded strongly in
conjunction with other agencies with support
for this disaster and more details are enclosed.
I would especially like to draw your attention to
the workshop CaribDA is holding at Punta Cana
in the Dominican Republic 25th-26th May 2017.
CaribDA director Jerry Matteo is hosting an
interesting technical program. More details are
available in this newsletter and registration is
available through the CaribDA.com website.
I am also pleased to advise that preparations are
well advanced for the CaribDA biennial
conference to be held in Curacao 29th May, -
1st June 2018 - more news on this from
CaribDA Vice President, Manuel Pereira, further
on in this newsletter.
President's Message By: John D. Thompson, Desalination Company of Trinidad & Tobago Ltd.
Letter from the Editor By: Karlene Singh, Consolidated Water Co. Ltd.
A blessed and happy New Year to each of you!
We enter this New Year with much gratitude
for 2016 and anticipation for 2017.
CaribDA continues to see significant growth,
with our membership currently standing at two
hundred and sixty. We have been busy on
various fronts, providing technical workshops,
participating in various events, supporting the
UNESCO Chair at the University of Curacao,
and preparing for our Biennial Conference in
2018.
We are pleased with the turnout at our
CWWA Pre-Conference Workshop held in
Trinidad at the end of last year. Preparations for
what promises to be an informative Reverse
Osmosis/Membrane Water Treatment
Workshop in the Dominican Republic, 25-26
May 2017, are well underway. Sponsorship
packages are also available. We look forward to
having you join us for another successful event.
The Young Leader’s Program and membership
continues to grow. This will be the first full year
for the program and its Committee is looking
forward to launching many of its initiatives. The
YLP is entering 2017 with fifteen members
including its seven-member Committee.
The Humanitarian Committee launched a Haiti
Donation Drive in November 2016 to provide
pure drinking water to areas hit by Hurricane
Matthew. Donations for two hundred and
eighteen water filters have already been
received. With a goal of one thousand filters to
be shipped, we continue to seek and appreciate
the generous support of our members.
Desalination in Curacao has seen the end of an
era, with the demolition of their thermal plant.
An update on the Biennial Conference to be
held in Curacao is included in this issue.
CaribDA looks forward to another productive
and successful year in serving its members and
affiliates.

CaribDA-Sponsorship Story By: Monica Boodhan
The University of Trinidad and Tobago
In line with the CaribDA-YLP benefits and opportunities, a young student
enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Systems program
at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT)’s San Fernando Technical
Institute Campus was the first recipient of an affiliate company
sponsorship opportunity to attend the CaribDA’s Biennial Conference
and Exposition which was held at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad from May
31st to June 03rd 2016. The CaribDA-YLP would like to take this
opportunity to thank H2O Innovation and Mr. Jason Deal for their
support which allowed Mr. Jeremy Roberts to attend his first Conference
and Exposition in his area of interest. We are proud to share with our
readers Jeremy’s experiences at our event:
“The extent of my knowledge on Desalination was only what little
information I had gathered in the months prior to the CaribDA
conference of 2016 as I was mid-way through my final project for my
B.Sc. degree, “Implementing another Desalination Plant in Trinidad and
Tobago.” The 2016 CaribDA Conference and exposition, entitled
“Developing and Affording New Water Sources” served as the perfect
platform for me to gather information on my project. Fortunately, I
experienced firsthand the benefits of the CaribDA YLP initiative as I was
able to obtain sponsorship to attend the event through the benefits of
the YLP committee and from Mr. Jason Deal of H2O Innovation. The
CaribDA conference was an amazing learning experience for me
personally as it aided me immensely in being able to complete my final
year project and in turn finish my degree. The conference allowed me to
understand the fundamentals and dynamics of desalination and brought to
my attention the importance of using Desalination as an alternate method
of producing potable water. The conference also widened my knowledge
as to the many ways in
which desalination could be
achieved. I was also
pleasantly surprised by the
level of humility and
welcoming nature the
conference members had as
the majority were at the
top of their respective
fields. The conference as
well as its accompanying
network ing ac t iv i t ie s
allowed me to meet and
i n t e r a c t w i t h v e r y
k n o w l e d g e a b l e a n d
influential persons where I
was able to receive
feedback and direction for
my final year project. The
experience was humbling
and allowed me the
opportun ity to ga in
knowledge and opened the
door to possible future
relationships with many
respected and experienced
persons.”

CARICOM’s Renewable Energy
and Energy Efficiency Youth
Forum
On invitation from the President of the
University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT),
CaribDA’s Board Director and co-chair of the
YLP initiative Monica Boodhan, attended
CARICOM’s Renewable Energy and Energy
Efficiency Youth Forum on Thursday 17th
November 2016 at the UTT’s Energy Campus
located near the Point Lisas Industrial Estate
in Trinidad. CaribDA held a display area and
grasped the opportunity to educate the young
students about the numerous career and
development opportunities available in the
desalination and water reuse areas in the
Caribbean Region and beyond via the
CaribDA’s Young Leaders Program (YLP).
The Energy event allowed young students
from secondary schools across the island of
Trinidad to showcase their talents to educate
their fellow peers on the topics of renewable
energy and energy efficiency. The interactive
session was thoroughly enjoyed by over two
hundred students and professionals and the
students happily displayed their CaribDA bags
as they enjoyed the special event.

The University of Curacao (UoC)
Inaugurated their new Unesco Chair
for “Sustainable Water Technology
and Management”. The Inauguration
Ceremony launching of this Chair
took place on Thursday November 17th, 2016.
As part of the launching of the
new Unesco Chair, there were
three (3) days training prior the
Inauguration Ceremony. Two days
on Waste Water Management on
the 14th and 15th November,
2016 and one day training on the
topic of Desalination on the 16th
November.
The Waste Water Management Training was done by Mr. Mike Gosseline (City of
Kelowna, Canada, Association of Boards of Certification) and Mrs. Valerie
Jenkinson from World Water and Wastewater Solutions LTD (WWWS),
Canada. The training in Wastewater was well attended with twenty-five
participants. At the end of the second day, all the participants received a
certificate.
The Desalination Training was done by our CaribDA Board members, Mr. Jerry
Matteo and Mr. Manuel Pereira. For this training, there were a total of eighteen
participants and the information given was very interesting. In the afternoon, as
part of the training, the participants had the chance to visit the Aqualectra RO
Sta. Barbara plant. The RO-plant Coordinator, Mr. Jean Maduro, gave the
participants a very good description on how to operate a RO-plant. The site visit
was divided in three parts, the Intake, the RO-plant and the Water Storage Tanks
on top of the mountain, The Tafel Berg. Back at the University, every participant
received their Certificate.
CaribDA would like to congratulate the University of Curacao (UoC) and Prof.
Dr. Ir. Filomeno (Boey) Marchena with this tremendous new UNESCO Chair on
Sustainable Water Technology and Management.

As informed in the last edition (October 2016), Aqualectra (Water and Power Company of Curacao) started with the decommissioning of
their main production site. One of the four (4) Evaporator units that were installed (Evaporator V- 3) is since 1983 (37 years old). See
below table for an overview.
Now it is the Water Storage Tank’s turn to be demolished.
As you may know, the First Desalination Plant build in Curacao was in 1928. This is the reason to celebrate in 2018, the 90th anniversary
of desalination with the next CaribDA Conference.
