Abstract

The American margins of the Car ibbean comprise basins and accreted terranes

recording a polyphase tectonic history. P la te k inemat ic models and

reconst ruct ions back to the Jurass ic show that Mesozo ic s eparation of the

Amer icas produced pass ive margins that were overr idden diachronously from

west to east by a l lochthonous Car ibbean platerelated arc and oceanic

c o m p l e xes . P-T-t and structural data, sedimentary provenance, and basin-

subs idence s tud ies const ra in th is h is tory . Car ibbean lithospher e is Pacif ic-

der ived and was engulfed between the Americas dur ing their westward dr if t as the

At lant ic Ocean opened . This began ca . 120 Ma w i th development o f a west-

dipping Benioff zone between Central America and the northern Andes, now

marked by the Guatemalan and Cuban sutures in North America and by the

nor thern Co lombian and V enezuelan sutures o f South A mer ica , persist in g today

as the Lesser Ant i l les subduct ion zone. Most Car ibbean h igh-pressure

metamorphic complexes or ig inated at th is s ubduct ion zone, which probab ly

formed by arc-polar ity reversal at an ear l ier west-facing Inter-American Arc and

was probab ly caused by westward acce lerat ion of the Am er icas . The m ain ly 90 Ma

Caribbean basalts were extruded onto preexist ing Car ibbean crus t 30 m .y. later

and are not causal ly l inked to the reversal. The Great Car ibbean Arc or iginated at

this trench and evolved up to the present, acquir ing the shape of the preexist ing

Proto-C ar ibbean Seaway . The uplif t and cooling history of arc and forearc

terranes, and history of basin opening and subsidence, can be t ied to stages of

Car ibbean plate mo tion in a coherent, internal ly consisten t regional model that

provides the basis for further studies.
