Spanish Town,Virgin Gorda,British Virgin IslandsThe British Virgin Islands, also known asBritish West Indies, remain a BritishCrown Colony of 40 mostly uninhabitedLeeward Islands. Discovered by Columbusin 1493, they were controlled by Dutchcolonists until the British took over in 1666.We anchor at lovely Spanish Town,Virgin Gorda, an island known for itsunpopulated beaches and mountainousinterior. Optional activities include sailingand snorkeling; a transfer to The Baths,a beach hemmed in by huge boulders thatform crystal-clear pools for swimming;or touring the island, including stops atCopper Mine Point, the lookout point atGorda Peak, and the white sand beaches atSavannah Bay.

Basseterre, St. KittsSt. Kitts (formally, St. Christopher Island)was once a rich plantation island, wherecolonial estate houses—many of which arenow charming inns—stood beside expansesof swaying, green sugar cane. Its capital,Basseterre, is one of the prettiest in theCaribbean, with elegant timber-frame andstone British colonial buildings around itstown center. Up the coast lies the imposing18th-century Brimstone Hill Fortress,a UNESCO World Heritage site built by theBritish over the course of 100 years to defendagainst the French. Several optional shoreexcursions are available: a circle tour of theisland by rail and motorcoach; historical tourof Basseterre and its surroundings, rich inhistory and architectural character; tour abeautifully restored, 300-year-old West Indiangreat house for a glimpse at life here in the18th and 19th centuries; and off-road islandexcursion via Safari Land Rover.

Gustavia, St. BartsThe French West Indies island of St. Barts wasonce a destination exclusive to the rich andfamous, chic and stylish, yet casual. The island is known for its secluded coves, pristine beaches and hillsides dotted withpicturesque red-roofed houses. While strolling

through town, you are reminded that St. Bartswas once a Swedish colony—street signs inthe capital of Gustavia are in both Frenchand Swedish, and two of its original fortressesare Fort Gustav and Fort Carl. Severaloptional activities are offered such as asnorkel excursion to view exotic tropical fishand exquisite coral; an island tour thatincludes visits to historic sites, an artisanvillage and a private home; and a trek to theisland’s most picturesque view points(a photographer’s dream).

Sailboats speckle the cerulean waters surrounding Gustavia, St. Barts, a posh holiday destination notable forits distinct Breton, Norman and Swedish influences.

St. John’s, AntiguaDiscovered by Christopher Columbusin 1493, Antigua has 365 magnificentwhite sand beaches, a different one forevery day of the year. To the southeast of thecapital city, St. John’s, is English Harbour,a meticulously restored 18th-century navaldockyard that was the home port ofAdmiral Lord Nelson and his British fleet.Just above the dockyard, Nelson’s lookoutpoint on Shirley Heights offers spectacularviews of the neighboring islands,Montserrat and Guadeloupe. There areover 80 archaeological sites on Antigua, the oldest dating back over 4,000 years.A collection of pre-Columbian artifacts fromthe original inhabitants, the Arawak Indians, can be found in St. John’s Museum ofAntigua and Barbuda. Optional toursinclude: historic Antigua; art studios ofthe island; aerial canopy excursion; helicopterflight over paradise; and off-the-beaten-trackisland exploration by SUV.

Roseau, DominicaDominica, the youngest island in theLesser Antilles and the southernmost of theWindward Islands, is still being formed bygeothermal-volcanic activity, evidenced byits large boiling lake. Known for itsunspoiled natural beauty, the island has fewbeaches but numerous rivers runningthrough lush mountainous rainforests, home to Sisserou Parrots and rare plants andanimals long extinct on neighboring islands.Optional shore excursions: island tourfeaturing the Botanical Gardens,Trafalgar Falls, island villages and/orEmerald Pool; glide through the rainforesttreetops on an aerial tram in Morne TroisPitons National Park, a UNESCO WorldHeritage site; ocean kayaking and snorkelingat a reef formation; and powered catamaranexcursion in search of whales and dolphins.

St. George’s, GrenadaThe volcanic island of Grenada is bestknown as the “Spice Isle” because it is aleading producer of such fragrant spicesand crops as cinnamon, cloves, ginger, mace, allspice, orange peel, wild coffee, nutmeg andorganic cocoa. Grenada did not experience

strong European influence until themid-17th century, when French invadersdominated the local Caribs and grew wealthyexporting sugar. In the 18th century,Grenada was ceded to the United Kingdomand eventually became a Crown Colony, but many surnames and place names are stillin French, the local language is laced withFrench words and local dishes are cooked ina French style similar to that in New Orleans. The national dish is the “oildown,” a stew

cooked in coconut milk until all the milk isabsorbed, leaving a trace of coconut oil inthe pot. The typical “oildown” couldinclude salted pig tail, salt beef and chicken, with flour dumplings, breadfruit, yams orpotatoes. Several optional shore excursionsare offered including: visits to a spiceplantation, rum distillery, historic fort, waterfalls and a secluded white sand beach;and opportunities to swim and snorkel.

The lively island markets of the Caribbean offerlocal fruits, vegetable, spices, rum and handicrafts.

The Lesser Antilles’ pristine coasts and secludedcoves make ideal snorkeling sites.
