Forehead Body Site Considerations

• CareTemp is a new alternative device when speed and convenience is desired to quickly determine if a patient has normal or elevated fever.

• CareTemp is not well suited for critical measurement applications that influence medical treatment decisions (including temperature trending).

• Reliability of the forehead as a body site for precise temperature measurement can be impacted by:

– Prolonged exposure to a warm/cool environment (cooler operating room)

– Forehead perspiration (temporary localized cooling of skin)

– Medications that affect blood dilation/perfusion rate

– Emotional state of the patient (skin flushing from emotion/agitation)

– Thickness of skin tissue over the forehead

– Physiological conditions causing dilation of skin capillaries (menopause, imbalance)

• When high precision is required using alternative body sites, the SureTemp Plus (oral/axillary/rectal and Braun PRO 6000 (tympanic) are better tools.

HANDS ON DEVICE OPERATION

Setting Up the Thermometer

• Install the AAA batteries (3,300 measurements)

1. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to loosen the battery

cover screw (don’t try to remove the screw from the door).

2. Slide open the battery cover and remove the batteries.

3. Make sure to align the batteries as indicated inside the

battery compartment

4. Replace the battery cover and tighten the cover screw.

• If needed, change the C/F default setting

– From sleep mode press and hold both the MEM and C/F

buttons for 3 seconds to change the default scale. Three

beeps sound to confirm the setting is changed.

Taking a Temperature

1. Press Measure and release to power on the thermometer.

When the device is ready, a single dash appears on the screen

and a beeps sounds.

2. Position the thermometer between 4 and 6 cm from the center

of the patient's forehead, and aim between the eyebrows.

3. Press Measure and release. Slowly move the device toward

or farther from the forehead (starting at 4-6cm). The arrow on

the display flashes until the correct distance is achieved.

4. When the correct distance is reached, the LED bar will

illuminate, three beeps sound, and the measurement is

displayed.

5. To take a second measurement while unit is on, repeat step 3

and 4. The thermometer turns off after 10 seconds of inactivity.

Tips for Forehead Temperatures

• If the eyebrow area is covered with hair, sweat, or dirt, clean the area and wait 10 minutes before taking a measurement. – Sweat can cause a cooling of the forehead and result in a

low temperature reading.

– Common symptom with febrile patients

• Hold the thermometer and the forehead steady during measurement. Movement can impact the measurement.

• After pressing Measure to take a reading the device allows 20 seconds to capture it. If measurement is not completed before the 20 second time limit is up, the device displays Err . Restart the process.

Using Control Buttons

• To recall a measurement, press the Memory button

(Mem) to display the temperature in memory. The

LCD displays the temperature stored for 10 sec.

– Once the thermometer is powered off or a new

measurement is initiated, the last temperature taken

becomes the reading in memory.

• Press C/F to temporarily view the measurement in

the alternate scale. The conversion feature is

available any time a reading is displayed.

• To use the timer, press and release Timer button .

Audible beeps sound at 0, 15, 45, and 60 seconds.

Press the button again to exit at any time up to 60s.

CALIBRATION CHECK AND CLEANING

Checking Functional Calibration Accuracy

• A 9600 Plus Calibration Tester “fixture” will

be availability at time of product launch.

• Attaches to a new or existing 9600 Plus

tester and allows testing at all three set

point levels - 36.0°C, 38.5°C or 41.0°C

• A written procedure is being created and

validated and will be added to the 9600

Plus Operating Manual at that time.

• CareTemp will be the ONLY non-contact

thermometer with a method to field check

calibration accuracy!

Cleaning the Thermometer

• IR Sensor Window - slightly moisten a cotton swab or cloth with isopropyl or ethyl alcohol and gently wipe the surface of the lens using a side-to-side (not circular) motion.

• Device Body - Use a pre-moistened wipe or soft cloth slightly moistened with an approved disinfectant to clean and disinfect the thermometer. – See approved list of approved cleaners in Operating Manual

• After cleaning or disinfecting, wait at least 10 minutes before taking another measurement.
