OUR VISION:

• We believe that people living in substandard shelter is socially, morally and spiritually unacceptable.

• It is incumbent upon us to put decent shelter on the hearts and minds of everyone.

• We believe in the worth and dignity of every human being.

• We respect the people we serve and those that help us in this effort and recognize them as our greatest resource.

• Partnerships are paramount. It is a Habitat Goal to help partners meet their Goals.

• Habitat for Humanity can build homes that cost less than 30% of the market cost.

• Our operations are expanding rapidly and we have just started a local Illawarra, and Hunter group.

• Habitat for Humanity provide a “hand up not a hand out” building in partnership with families and corporations.

• Partner families contribute “sweat equity” and pay a deposit

• We use donated labour and materials

• As the loans are repaid, the funds go to helping more families in need

STRENGTHS:Habitat will deliver up to 30% savings on the construction of houses leveraging existing and extensive corporate support. These savings go directly into Habitat Partnership projects. THE HABITAT MODEL:There are 3 basic ways “Habitat for Humanity” can assist people with “affordable housing” or contribute to their social housing needs……

1. “BRUSH WITH KINDNESS”This help may take the form of a group of people painting a residence, replacing a kitchen, adding a deck, adding a wheelchair ramp, clearing landscaped areas etc. These are small scale projects and do not require formal public meetings to initiate.

The “Partner” (person or persons we are helping) may contribute a part cost towards the project.

2. “BUILD OR RENOVATE A HOUSE” “Habitat” acquires, through donation, or “less than market price” a block, or blocks of land.

Source of land - local councils, developers or public or private benefactors, or straight out purchase.

The home is designed, council approved, and constructed on this land, and ”Habitat” partners with an individual or couple to complete the process.

PARTNER CRITERIA:• Partners or their family must be able to contribute

500 hours of work towards their own house construction (called “Sweat Equity”)

• They must demonstrate some form of income• If a couple is involved, they both need to agree to “partner” with Habitat, and enter into a “no-interest Loan”.

3. TWO LOT SUBDIVISIONThis process relies on an existing owner of a property giving “Habitat” the right to subdivide the land, and to develop with a house. Sometimes this land is donated, or offered at a lower price, or is traded for some reciprocal work on the original existing property.

Note 1. Some “Medium density proposals” can be considered also.Note 2. All the above methods of helping people have been established for many years in Australia and have proven to assist others with virtually “no default” on loan repayments by the “partners” involved.Note 3. “Habitat” has existing relationships with suppliers of tools, paint, white goods, plumbing supplies, hardware(locks), cement, cladding materials and some steel/products.These materials are generally supplied “free”

SOME OF OUR STORIES:The Walters family of 6 were living in a small 3 bedroom house in Blacktown. Son Michael is profoundly disabled. The passageways in the house were not capable of wheelchair access so Michael lived most of his life in the lounge room.
