Choosing a career path can be an exciting but sometimes overwhelming decision.To help you make an informed decision and choose a career that’s right for you, attend Careers that shape the world, an annual experience day for Year 11 and 12 students.

DURING THE DAY YOU WILL:

Careers that shape the world includes three blocks of interactive and career-focused sessions across a range of study areas, followed by a fourth block of sessions that explore university life and beyond. When registering you’ll need to select one session from each time block. You’ll automatically be allocated to a welcome session when you register.

Boost your career with a second language

Find out how studying a second language can open doors to unexpected careers. Be inspired by stories from our recent graduates and get a taste of what it’s like to study languages at UQ.

Education: open doors to global opportunities

A snapshot of the pathways to a career as a primary or secondary school teacher, and the potential career opportunities beyond the classroom. Take part in interactive discussions, or just enjoy the show.

Excavating the rich human past Discover the work of archaeologists: our outdoor facility provides an excellent setting for learning the ropes of archaeological fieldwork. Work alongside archaeologists as they excavate, map, sieve and identify artefacts.

Open science and law The world of science and law are changing and intersecting in new and different ways. This session will compare the open science movement with the evidence-based evidence movement, identifying many challenges.

Algorithmic thinking with Ozobots

By drawing paths and creating colour codes, you’ll work together in teams to create a city for a robot (the Ozobot). Be introduced to algorithmic thinking, prediction and planning in a fun and creative workshop.

Build a prosthetic limb Engineers improve millions of lives through developing medical technologies. Design and construct a prosthetic limb for an amputee, and test its effectiveness against other teams.

Burn baby burn Want to know what a fire tornado looks like? See first hand the impact fire can have on building materials or assemblies.

Calling all aspiring entrepreneurs

Through UQ’s Idea Hub, learn how to build your own business model, pitch your start-up idea and begin your innovation journey.

Creating and conserving energy

Energy crisis happens around the world and is most serious in developing countries. Discover some of the technologies used to tackle the issue, and how to determine the effectiveness in helping a community.

Electricity to the world: affordable 24/7 power

1.5 billion people live without electricity - dark nights, no running water, no refrigeration for medicine. We need to do our share to create change. As engineers, our job is to develop this technology.

Producing the perfect drink Take part in a hands-on activity and experience all the elements of a real chemical engineering problem.

Robotics and artificial intelligence

Robotics is a rapidly growing field. Experience building and programming robots and learn about the basics of artificial intelligence.

Technology and design Use MaKeyMaKey kits to create human-remote controllers to play Space Invaders or control a flight simulator. The workshop is fun and hands-on, and requires no former experience.

The client’s architect Act as a client’s architect and utilise the principles of architecture (site orientation, client briefing, working to constraints) to develop and design a space.

Virtual reality tour Experience what it feels like to be on-site at a mine, a building site, or a chemical processing plant. If you’re interested in virtual reality, you’ll love this.

HEALTH AND MEDICINE

SESSION DESCRIPTION

Athletic performance to disease prevention

Help build stronger athletes and healthier communities with a career in exercise and sport sciences or exercise physiology. Participate in demonstrations and activities conducted in our Human Performance Laboratory.

Careers at the forefront of healthcare

Impactful and diverse career options in healthcare, in a rapid growth sector. Create change at both local and global levels with solutions to the big issues facing future healthcare.

Using only spaghetti, tape and string. You’ll work together in groups to design the tallest free-standing tower that can support a marshmallow without collapsing.

Build a floating house Design and build a floating house and test your comprehension of physics and balance, as well as of the economics of projects, by keeping a tally of the rising cost of materials and their use.

Design and construct a sustainable bridge

Build a sustainable bridge between two islands, taking into account people, the planet and profit. Be introduced to social, environmental, economical and critical thinking.

How minerals shape the world Did you know that over 40 naturally occurring elements are used to make a smart phone? Find out how minerals are used in society and how engineers help guide the responsible development of resources.
