Mock Interviews

Undertaking a successful interview is a skill and one which requires practice. Provide your students with the opportunity to develop their interview skills and find out first-hand what employers look for during the job application process.

Employers are trained to conduct interviews at either your school/college or at a place of work. Interviewers provide both verbal and written feedback for students which has a significant impact on confidence and future interview technique.

“100% of participating students rated the mock interview programme as either good or very good.” - Royal Docks Community School, Evaluation Report.

“I was really impressed by how well the students had prepared and how they listened to my feedback. Really good initiative to help them start to think about their future.” - Business Volunteer

Business Mentoring

One-to-one business mentoring can transform a young person’s confidence, outlook and development. Our mentoring programmes are delivered in partnership with our corporate business partners through a combination of face-to-face and e-mail mentoring over the course of an academic year.

Mentoring supports improvement in academic performance, develops key skills, broadens horizons and provides a valuable insight into the world of work.

“I’m really impressed with my mentee. The way he actually listens and applies what was discussed, it was refreshing to work with someone who listened and had questions.” - Business Mentor

Attitudes for Success

Gifted and Talented Programme

Life continually throws us challenges and complications. Attitudes for Success promotes how having a positive outlook and using set-backs to your advantage will help you succeed in your personal and professional lives.

Trained volunteers lead a series of activities that promote self-reflection, encourage a positive attitude and highlight professionalism in the workplace. Workshops can be combined with drama performances and a motivational speaker.

Our gifted and talented programme supports and challenges your students learning, career knowledge and personal development.

Past projects have included tasking students with promoting their local area and challenging perceptions of it by using a creative output such as a short film, photography exhibition or a business presentation. This programme is normally delivered over the course of an academic year through a series of workshops with the support of corporate business partners.

During the workshop, students participate in enterprise activities aimed at encouraging teamwork and building relationships. Students also take part in two seminars: ‘Study Skills’ and ‘Attitude’. ‘Study Skills’ identifies learning styles and helps students to become successful learners. ‘Attitude’ promotes a positive attitude towards life and education.

Reward participation and celebrate achievement with East London Children’s University. The East London Children’s University (CU) is part of a national organisation that provides 5-14 year olds with exciting and innovative learning activities and experiences outside normal school hours.

Formative experiences heavily shape future life choices, particularly in relation to education and employment, and independent evaluation by the University of Cambridge has confirmed that participation in CU significantly improves school attendance, increases levels of attainment across all subject areas and raises aspirations.

Each time a student completes a learning activity they receive a stamp in their CU ‘Passport to Learning’. Once sufficient credits have been accrued the young person is awarded a CU Certificate of Achievement during a hosted Graduation Ceremony.

“Achievement is significantly better at key stages 1-3 for children who participate in Children’s University learning compared with non-participants.”- Professor John MacBeath, University of Cambridge

“Children’s University is an exciting opportunity to engage children in out of school activities as well as inspire them in career choices. Having the aspiration to attend University from such a young age should help with their learning at school.”- Darren Williams, Headteacher, Central Park School, Newham

16 Career Planning

Our team of Matrix accredited, level 7 qualified careers advisers all have over 8 years experience in offering a range of one to one and group information, advice and guidance activities, developing and delivering year-long bespoke programmes in schools.

Careers Guidance Interviews

Using guidance skills, careers advisers help pupils to locate ambitious education and career options by identifying opportunities and assessing pupils’ abilities, interests and achievement.

Working with all year groups, advisers offer a variety of one to one meetings including motivational and diagnostic interviews and psychometric testing.

When combined with our other programmes, interviews have an enhanced impact on inspiring and motivating students to fulfil their potential.

Face-to-face advice and guidance remains one of the most effective ways to support students to make successful transitions, inspiring and motivating them to fulfil their potential.

“I think that it is an invaluable service to the students and school and I am very grateful to work with such an experienced and caring careers adviser.” - Careers Co-ordinator, Newham School

Engaging with Parents

Enable parents to provide quality advice and assistance to their children by expanding their knowledge and understanding of careers.

“Inviting employer representatives to parents’ evenings will help bring occupations to life.” - Department of Education

Using parents’ evening as a backdrop, we will invite local employers to set up information posts. Parents will be encouraged to use this opportunity to speak to business representatives about career paths and entry routes relevant to the interests and abilities of their children. Careers advisers will provide one to one guidance and can offer talks on progression and supporting young people through the transition process.

24 Work Experience

Extended Work Experience Placements

Not all students are suited to academic study; an extended work placement provides students with the chance to learn on the job, gain valuable experience and enhance future employment prospects.

“An estimated one-quarter of pupils are offered part-time employment following a work experience placement.” - Work Experience: Impact and Delivery Report by the Education and Employers Taskforce

Covering a period of up to one academic year, a work placement is for one or two days a week. Students are interviewed and their choices and needs are individually assessed. Our team conducts regular visits during a placement to review progress, set goals, monitor attendance and address any issues.

Preparation for Work Experience Placements

For many students, entering a workplace as an employee can be daunting. Students are unaware of what to expect or how to behave.

Preparation for Work Experience helps to ensure students are ready to enter a professional environment. The workshop covers: protocol at work, professionalism, appropriate behaviour in the workplace, what to expect from colleagues and expected responsibilities.
