Now students don’t have to choose between starting a career or continuing their

Balancing work and a degree course will be challenging. But we offer at least half a

day leave a week to concentrate on university studies. And, in return they’ll gain full

chartered membership of the CMI (Chartered Management Institute).

What’s more, they’ll have the experience needed to step into a management role

after three years and become one of our future leaders.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for resilience, determination and good leadership skills, along with the

flexibility to meet the changing needs of our business. Candidates will need a

minimum of 104 UCAS points (based on the new UCAS tariff or 260 based on the old

tariffs).

Deadline for applications is Monday 6 January 2020, but we would encourage an

early application as Assessment Centres will begin in November.

On the one hand you’ll take on a real role and enjoy getting paid while learning on-the-job and taking responsibility for people, projects and our operations. On the other hand you’ll be an undergraduate student, studying towards a degree in business and management. To successfully apply for any of our degree apprenticeship programmes you'll need 104 UCAS Points.

You get UCAS points when you pass a qualification like an A-level – the number of points you get depends on the grade you achieve.

Where will I study and how will I get there?

For all our programmes, our degree apprentices will attend either the University of Bradford or Sheffield Hallam University, in weekly blocks throughout the year.

Don't worry about travel and accommodation for this, as it will be paid for by Morrisons.

Here is an overview of the mandatory subjects required for different university

courses:

o Most Science subjects at university (Medicine, Veterinary Science, Biology,

Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry) require Chemistry. These

subjects also require another science, many preferring Biology.

o For Medicine and Veterinary Science, it is best to take Chemistry, Biology

and one from either Maths or Physics. This way you will keep the vast majority

of medical schools open to you.

o All Language courses at university require the language being studied and the

top universities prefer a second language.

o Most Engineering courses require Maths and Physics

o Most Economics courses require Maths and certain universities like Further

Maths (although they will rarely explicitly say so).

o Most English courses require English Literature – English Language on its

own is not sufficient.

o Humanities courses such as History and Geography require that subject at A

level.

o Natural Sciences, Materials Science, Biomedical Sciences, Environmental

Science, Optometry and Earth Sciences (Geology) require two from Biology,

Chemistry, Maths or Physics.

o Many Sports Science courses want to see one from Chemistry, Biology, Maths

or Physics. Some may treat PE as a science.

o Nursing and Midwifery require Biology or another science.

o Leading Psychology courses request one from Chemistry, Biology, Maths or

Physics.

o Most Physiotherapy courses will consider you with just Biology. However

many require a second science subject from Chemistry, Physics or Maths.

o Some Architecture courses want an arts and science mix. Many also ask for

an art and design portfolio to demonstrate artistic skills so an Art or Design

and technology A level may be critical.

o Physics courses require Physics and Maths.

o Maths courses require Maths and preferably Further Maths.

o Actuarial Science requires Maths

o Accountancy generally does not stipulate although one or two universities

prefer Maths.

o Some Management Studies and Computer Science courses prefer Maths.

o Most traditional Music courses require Music and grade VII / VIII

o Art & Design courses require Art or Design Technology including

AGCE/National.

o Some Drama courses require English Literature and for a few courses

English and/or Theatre Studies.

o For Classics courses Latin or Ancient Greek are required

o Some Occupational Therapy courses ask for Biology.

o In terms of Teaching, most A levels count. You need at least one from Art,

Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Design and Technology, Drama (Theatre

Studies), English, French, Geography, German, History, ICT, Italian,

When choosing your degree subject to read, here are a few other

considerations:

o Take a look at finance & management courses – these have great applicability and

are well respected.

o Business management degrees are proving increasingly popular, with employers

particularly, as many have work experience built into their course. They provide

experience that employers feel is more relevant to the corporate world than some

other disciplines.

o Seriously consider engineering if you have a maths and physics aptitude. It is a

highly respected degree and you do not need to go into engineering. It may set you

apart from other students when applying for roles. Oxford offers a very

interesting course called EEM – engineering, economics and management.

o Law is another respected degree, has great applicability in the corporate world and

you do not need to pursue a legal career afterwards. One issue here is that law has a

reputation for being a rather tedious degree!! You need to enjoy reading large

tomes.

o Languages are also popular, but consider combining them with another subject like

economics. You may find that this increases your attractiveness to employers.

The problem with studying languages is that the continental European students will

outclass you nearly every time. They are generally fluent in a number of languages

in addition to studying a subject like finance and management. Alternatively

become fluent in a language by living abroad for a year or two and then study

something else.

o If you are considering studying politics or philosophy –why not consider a

combined course with economics. This will strengthen your degree.

o If you are interested in economics but are concerned about the maths, look at

courses on Business Economics or Industrial Economics – these tend to be less

mathematical.

o If you know you want to get into the fashion world, then ensure you choose the

most applicable degree – this will in the fashion design & textiles area. Choose a

sandwich course so you get some work experience.

CAREERS

Most people do not have a very good grasp on the plethora of job opportunities that

are on offer and neither do they understand what the function of many of the roles

are. This is true even of roles that people appear to be familiar with, such as

marketing. This careers section looks to address this by providing an explanation of

many of those positions. The earlier you can start to formulate your views on a

career, the better, as you can then target relevant work experience (and possibly

your degree) as early as possible. This will stand you in good stead, as most firms

want you to demonstrate work experience in the area to which you are applying.

Critical Thinking Tests for Lawyers

Many law firms use the Watson-Glaser Test as part of their recruitment process. It

measures critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills. The Bar Aptitude Test

(BCAT), compulsory for gaining entry onto the Bar professional Training

programme is also based on this test. The process of critical thinking involves

thorough and careful interpretation of information as well as its subsequent

application to reach justifiable conclusions. These skills are necessary in many

professions, particularly law, where a lawyer must evaluate different pieces of

evidence.

You are tested across five different areas:

• Drawing inferences – this is the ability to draw conclusions from facts. In this test

each question contains a statement to be regarded as true, followed by some

inferences. You have five options with which to answer – True, Probably True,

Inadequate Data, False and Probably False.

• Recognising assumptions – the ability to assess whether a statement is justifiable

based on an assumption given. You will be given two statements and must decide if

the second statement can be justified based on the assumptions of the first

statement.

• Deductive reasoning – the ability to weigh information and to decide whether

conclusions are warranted. You must decide whether a follow on statement is

necessarily true based on the first statement (not your general knowledge). Answers

are yes or no.

• Logical interpretation – measures your ability to understand the weighting of

different arguments given a particular question or issue. You are given a short

paragraph to be assumed as true. You will then be given a suggested conclusion and

must decide whether this conclusion follows on from the information beyond

reasonable doubt (although not necessarily absolutely). Questions are in yes or no

format.

• Argument evaluation – the ability to distinguish between strong and weak

arguments, where a strong argument is one which is important and directly related

to the question. This section measures your ability to determine whether certain

conclusions necessarily follow from information in given statements or premises.

You will be given a question statement followed by an answer statement and must

decide whether the answer statement is strong or weak.
