Job Description
Job purpose
The role of the Careers Advisor is to assist our young peoples career learning, planning and
development by helping with the development of Careers Information, Advice and Guidance (CIAG)
in Christs School. The Careers Advisor will work closely with the Senior colleague with responsibility
for Careers in developing the careers programme, organising resources and helping to secure high
standards of teaching, learning and guidance.
Key accountabilities
To: Secure all pupils entitlement to CIAG. This will be achieved through:-
1. Supporting the development of effective and continually improving careers education, careers
information and careers guidance for young people.
2. Facilitating the contribution of colleagues and a range of partners to young peoples career
learning, planning and development.
3. Designing, selecting and providing curriculum resources, activities and services to meet young
peoples career needs in consultation with the Senior Colleague with responsibility for Careers.
4. Working with the Head of 6th
form and other colleagues during 2013-14 to ensure the school and
students are prepared in relation to CIAG for the first 6th form intake in September 2014.
5. Ensuring continuing professional development for themselves and others to secure high standards
of careers teaching, learning and guidance.
1. The Careers Advisor will support the development of effective and continually improving
careers education, careers information and careers guidance for young people by:
1.1 Liaising with the Senior Colleague with
responsibility for Careers on appropriate policy,
priorities and resources for developing careers
education and guidance
Develop a policy for CIAG which satisfies
national requirements and guidance, and local
needs
Support the planning, implementation and
evaluation of a CIAG improvement plan linked
to the school priorities
Interpret national initiatives, research and
inspection findings for the benefit of the school
1.2 Supporting the Senior Colleague with
responsibility for Careers on an appropriate
model for integrating CIAG in the curriculum
Suggest how CIAG should be provided for
different groups
Support links with other curriculum areas.
1.3 Keeping abreast of external changes and
advising the Senior Colleague with
responsibility for Careers on how the school
should respond
Ensure that appropriate links are made
between CIAG and any new initiatives

1.4 Feeding back information on the performance
and achievement of young people which can be
used to improve teaching, learning and the
curriculum
Collect and analyse first destinations data
with the Senior Colleague with responsibility for
Careers
1.5 Developing a strategy for ensuring inclusion,
equity, equality of opportunity and respect for
diversity
Monitor students curricular and work
experience choices for evidence of stereotyping
Provide guidance and support for young
people encountering difficulties, e.g. in making
non-traditional choices, combating racism
1.6 Ensuring the quality of careers education and
guidance
Evaluate major aspects of provision regularly
and provide reports for senior managers and
governors
1.7 Working with the Head of 6th
form to ensure
the school is ready in respect of careers for its
first 6th
form intake
Provide information and advice about
appropriate post 16 choices available
Developing resource base and information
appropriate to post 16 careers guidance
2. The Careers Advisor will help to facilitate the contribution of colleagues and a range of partners to young
peoples career learning, planning and development by:
2.1 Enabling parents and carers to give careers help
to their own and other peoples children
Inform parents and carers about what is
planned in the careers programme and how
they can help
Be available for Parent Information Evenings
related to progression routes such as Options
evenings for Year 8 and 9 and 6th
form choices
for years 10 and 11
2.2 Developing and maintaining links with business
and community partners
Maintain a network of useful business andcommunity contacts
Support local careers conventions for youngpeople
2.3 Developing and maintaining links with local
schools and colleges in order to facilitate young
peoples transitions
Arrange visits for yourself, young people and
staff to link to schools, colleges and universities
3. The Careers Advisor informs on curriculum resources, activities and services to meet young peoples
careers needs by:
3.1 Planning and contributing, where appropriate,
to the delivery of careers education activities
Support in the development of a scheme of
work for CIAG
Organise specific careers education activities,
e.g. work experience preparation, mock
interviews and follow-up

3.2 Developing careers information Develop and maintain careers pages on the
school website and intranet
Manage the provision of a careers library
Display careers information around the school
including resources created by young people
themselves
4. The Careers Advisor ensures continuing professional development for themselves and others to secure
high standards of careers teaching, learning and guidance by:
4.1 Developing the skills and confidence to provide
an effective and improving careers programme
Select and make use of appropriate
opportunities, such as co-ordinators
handbooks, open learning materials, careers
associations and other relevant networks
