DEFINITIONS OF TERMS USED IN THIS PLANNING GUIDE
ACE-IT – Accelerated Credit Enrollment in Industry Training: an in-class industry training (apprenticeship) program for high school students. In an ACE- IT program, students earn high school graduation credits and industry training credit for level 1 apprenticeship technical training, getting a head start towards completion of an apprenticeship program.
Advanced Certificate: acknowledges completion of an approved advanced level or specialized program which builds on previously completed certificate of a mini-mum duration of six months (equivalent to a minimum of three months of full-time study beyond a Certificate).
Advanced Diploma: acknowledges completion of an approved advanced level or specialized program which builds on a previously completed diploma , or on at least five years related work experience (equivalent to a minimum of three months of full-time study beyond a diploma).
Apprentice: an employee working under the direction of a certified tradesperson (Journeyman) in a company that is committed to training t he employee. All apprentices are registered with the Industry Training Authority (ITA). An apprentice is considered a student during their apprenticeship, committed to completing the requirements for certification in order to receive journeyman status.
Associate Degree: acknowledges completion of an approved program consisting of 20 university transfer courses (equivalent to 16 months of ful l-time university studies).
Bachelor Degree (Applied Degree): acknowledges completion of an approved, advanced-level, specialized program (equivalent to 8-10 semesters of full-time, post-secondary studies). An applied degree normally contains diploma entry and exit options, includes formally credited work experience, integrates career/technical work-place applications with theory, and is designed to meet demonstrated labour market needs for advanced programming. Applied degrees prepare graduates for employment; preparation for graduate studies is not an essential feature of applied degrees. Graduate work may be limited to the specialized area of study of the applied degree unless further undergraduate preparation is obtained.
Certificate: acknowledges completion of an approved basic-level program (equivalent to 60 hours to one year of full-time study. The duration of the program will be stated on the Certificate).

Red Seal (Journeyman) Certification: In BC, more than 100 apprenticeship programs offer career opportunities and provincial certification. Trainees who success-fully complete an apprenticeship earn a Journeyman and Red Seal Certification (often referred to as a “ticket”). Certified tradespeople demonstrate a defined skill level in a trade or industry occupation, and those with certification typically earn more than those who are not certified. Journeymen with Red Seal designations are recognized across the country which supports the mobility of qualified trades workers between provinces.
SSA – Secondary School Apprentice: Students who are 15 or older can participate in the Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) program. SSAs need to find an employer who will hire them and commit to their training. Through hands-on work experience with a certified tradesperson, students develop practical skills and earn high school graduation credits. School counsellors, work experience coordinators, or career advisors can aid in a student’s registration in the SSA program by contacting the employer and advising them on how the SSA program works.
