President’s Message

The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development announced that as of June 25, 2020 a sobering 1.3 million state residents had filed for unemployment since mid-March. At the same time, many local businesses have expressed concern that the restrictions necessary to safeguard our collective health make it difficult for them to generate enough profit to support themselves and their employees. As COVID-19 restrictions begin to lift, residents are slowly being reintroduced into the workforce, but speculation over whether a damaged economy can support the jobs it once did abounds.

This has been a year of dramatic upheaval and uncertainty, and — for many New Jersey residents and small business owners — a year marred by job loss and ever-increasing economic insecurity. With strong roots as a community college, Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ) has a responsibility to the communities it serves. Through the newly established Career and Technical Education division, our institution rises to meet this responsibility.

RCSJ’s Division of Career & Technical Education (CTE) prepares individuals for high-wage, skill-specific careers that are in demand by providing core academics, employability coaching, technical training and adult education opportunities. Offering a combination of academic degree and certificate programs, career-oriented pathways and personal enrichment courses, both online and on campus in compliance with active New Jersey Governor Executive Orders, CTE is poised to provide individuals with diverse and customizable programs that meet the needs of traditional and nontraditional students alike.

CTE also works to grow New Jersey’s economy by investing in its workforce. The division provides local businesses with resources, facilities and guidance to assist in training new and existing workforce members. Offering corporate trainings and industry-recognized certification pathways, CTE provides accessible and relevant programs of study based on the regional needs of employers through program alignment with local school districts and RCSJ’s premier partner, Rowan University.

If you are an individual seeking to reenter the workforce, or are looking to either establish a new career with options to earn a credential or seek advancement within your current organization — or are a business owner struggling to prepare yourself and your workforce for the demands of the new post-pandemic reality — RCSJ’s Division of Career and Technical Education stands ready to equip you for your journey forward to a career that is not only relevant for today’s world, but also rewarding.

Frederick Keating, Ed.D.President

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING

CareerAdvance USA Apprenticeships in Advanced ManufacturingRowan College of South Jersey is one of the partners of a $4 million CareerAdvance USA Grant, which was awarded County College of Morris (CCM). Through this grant, we will be offering training and apprenticeship programs for those looking to build rewarding and well-paying careers in the high-demand field of advanced manufacturing.

As an RCSJ CareerAdvance apprentice, you will gain skills in a condensed timeframe, while being paid, to obtain a job in advanced manufacturing. You also will have the opportunity to gain college credit during your participation if you would like to continue and pursue a certificate or college degree.

Apprenticeships are available to those with little to no knowledge of advanced manufacturing, along with those with a basic knowledge of the filed. Interested participants can take part in one or both of the following:

Pre-Apprenticeship Boot Camps: These are four to six weeks long, totaling about 24 hours a week. The boot camps are for those who need to be trained in the basics of machine learning. There is a small fee to take part in the Boot Camps.

Registered Apprenticeship Programs: Apprentices are hired by a company to take part in on-the-job training, while receiving related technical instruction, for about one year. During an apprenticeship, participants are trained at the company. This allows companies to hire suitable apprentices permanently after the apprenticeship is over.

Apprenticeships are also available to companies that want to provide current employees with additional training and an opportunity for advancement.

To learn more about apprenticeships in advanced manufacturing, visit Apprenticeship.govFor more information on RCSJ CareerAdvance Apprenticeships in Advanced Manufacturing, email [email protected]
