February is a busy month here in the world of Career and

Technology Education. We have many exciting things going on so

be sure to read through and check out all the events you can

participate in.

You don’t want to miss the 2012-13 Tech & Art Festival on

February 23rd

It will be held at SLHS from 10AM – 3PM.

This year marks the 19th Annual Technology Fair, and the 13th Annual Art Fair

CTE will be showcasing many of our fabulous programs with

items such as:

Student works, Presentation Boards, Slide Shows, Computer

Babies, Bio Medical Display, a live presentation from our

Robotics Teams and many more.

Get your ‘Passport’ at the entrance for an opportunity to win a

How did CTE get started?

Middle Ages - The roots of vocational training can be traced all the way back to the days of apprenticeships in the Middle Ages.

In 1563 the system became more prescribed and regulated: the Elizabethan Statute of Artificers set out terms and conditions for training (including duration of seven years and for the master–apprentice relationship) and was primarily in the area of builders and stonemasons.

We have come a long way since then.

Career and Technology Education (CTE) as we know it has developed over the last 100 years.

1917 - When President Woodrow Wilson signed the Smith- Hughes Vocational Education Act into law, it was the beginning of federal funding for vocational education in the United States. 1926 - American Vocational Association (AVA) was formed when the National Society for Vocational Education and the Vocational Education Association of the Middle West came together. 1929 – Areas of training were in agriculture and home economics. 1937 – Areas of training now included trades and industries. 1940 – Distributive Education and Aircraft Trades have been established in Vocation Schools. 1963 - When the Vocational Education Act of 1963 (The Perkins Act) was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson, it became the most comprehensive vocational education measure that had ever become law in the history of our nation. It authorized a new permanent program of federal assistance for vocational education 1998 - The name of American Vocational Association’ was changed to the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) in 1998. 2013 – CTE today, includes courses in the areas of: Arts Technology, Communications, Business & Marketing, Computer Technology, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), JROTC, Health Services and Science & Natural Resources. https://www.acteonline.org/content.aspx?id=18087 http://cte.unt.edu/about/history-of-legislation

In 2009 approximately 35.5% of all students in the U.S. were enrolled in a CTE course http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/ctes/tables/h127.asp

In 2011-12, Bethel students took advantage of 6300 course opportunities in Career and Technical Education

How will Bethel show their CTE Spirit?

Staff and students in the Career & Technical Education Department here in Bethel will be busy this February with many activities to promote CTE Month. Here are just a few things going on:

GKHS - Student leaders will visit Frontier Middle School to showcase CTE art, while Advanced Photo students will visit the Seattle Center.

SLHS – host a curriculum night (date TBD) and send materials to Spanaway & Cedarcrest Middle Schools promoting CTE

BHS – Robin Hodges, Career Center Clerk, will host a Financial Aid Night to assist students and parents in filling out their FAFSA. AFJROTC will continue their monthly Buddy Reading program with elementary students and will be participating in a School Beautification program.

SMS – Lois Noble will host a session “Why your student needs to take a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Class!” at the PTSA sponsored Parent Info night on Feb 12

th.

SMS will also be holding their second STEM TEA (Technology, Engineering, and Aptitude) event February 13

th and will open registrations to 5

th & 6

th graders at Naches Trail, Spanaway and Thompson.

Throughout CTE Month in February and especially on Feb. 23, CTE Social Media Advocacy Day, ACTE will be turning to current and former CTE students, teachers, administrators, CTSO leaders, business owners and anyone who cares about education that prepares our youth and adults for the future workforce to share their experiences with CTE on the Internet. There are several ways to communicate your story:

Twitter: Share your story in 140 characters or less, and be sure to include hashtag #careerteched. Direct to your legislator by adding @ and your legislator's handle before your message; for example, "@Barack_Obama Perkins funding critical to workforce, edu & preparing students to be college & career ready. Restore funding! #careerteched"

Facebook: Write your story on your legislator's Facebook wall. You can also post it on the ACTE Facebook wall or post on your own wall/status.

Blog: Share your experiences on your blog and send us the link.

Video: Post a video to SchoolTube and send us the link.

Get sample tweets, sample Facebook messages and blog ideas to spark your creativity on February 23 and all month!

ACTE will share your contributions on the Web, through social networks and with legislators to make the case for CTE.

Spanaway Middle School

PLTW Presentation at Seattle University

Students from Lois Nobel's GTT (Gateway To Technology) class presented before teachers, counselors, and administrators at the Project Lead The Way Counselors Conference on December 4, 2012 at Seattle University. Students shared how GTT, a hands-on STEM course made what they were learning relevant and fun! The PLTW Gateway To Technology (GTT) program features a project-based curriculum designed to challenge and engage the natural curiosity and imagination of middle school students. They envision, design and test their ideas with the same advanced modeling software used by companies like Lockheed Martin, Intel and Sprint. They study mechanical and computer control systems; think robotics and animation. Students also explore the importance of energy, including innovative ways to reduce, conserve and produce it using solar, thermal and wind power. The knowledge that student’s gain and the skills they build from GTT create a strong foundation for further STEM learning in high school and beyond.

Graham-Kapowsin High School Army JROTC is hosting a

Dodge Ball Tournament on 23 Feb 2013 at approx. 9:00 am.

Come bring your strongest 6-10 person team and test your

ability against teams throughout the community. There

will be three divisions: Middle School, High School and

Masters. You must meet the requirements listed below to

play. After signing up, you will be placed in a bracket and

qualified to participate and possibly win our 2013 Dodge

Ball tournament.

Requirements:

-ages 12+

-must have a team of 6-10 people

-every individual must complete the waiver online

-admission fee of $20 per team

-Read and Understand the rules given online

SHOUT OUT!

A ‘Shout out’ goes to Curtis Olson and his DECA Club for

reactivated the DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America)

Program this year at BHS.

The club has 48 registered members and has already reached

the ‘Achievement Level’ in this year’s Chapter and Membership

Campaign. They will receive a certificate and a plaque at the

state competition in March. Way to go team!

Scholarship Opportunity for seniors

I have been asked to share and promote the 2013 ACPE

Scholarship. This is a scholarship opportunity for seniors

(in Washington and Oregon) who have been actively

involved in the use of technology during their high school

careers and are planning to pursue studies in a technology

related field.

Last year ACPE awarded four $2,500 scholarships to four

deserving students. In addition, a few years ago, one of the

winners was from Spanaway Lake High School.

Deadline for scholarship applications is March 1, 2013.
