Georgia’s Career PathwayGeorgia’s Career Pathway
• Is a coherent, articulated sequence of rigorous academic and career/technical courses, usually beginning in the 9th grade and leading to a diploma, associate degree, or baccalaureate degree and beyond.
BRIDGE Implications for LEAs:• Mandates 6-12 system of student advisement for
ALL students through a systematic, comprehensive and developmental advisement process
• Mandates 6-8 educational and career planning to result in an individual graduation plan synonymous with the Pathway Program of Study prior to the end of the second semester of the 8th grade
• Mandates continued advisement in grades 9-12 and sign-offs by student, advisor, and parent
House Bill 186• Signed into law during 2011 Legislative Session• Involves work between Georgia Department of
Education, Technical College System of Georgia, University System of Georgia
• 3 agencies mentioned together at least 7 times• Legislature calls for entities to “coordinate, work
together, jointly establish, consult” with each other• Create a smooth transition of students from
secondary to postsecondary programs
House Bill 186 Activities1. Establish college and career readiness standards in
reading, writing, and mathematics that align with core curriculum and level of performance necessary to meet college readiness standards
2. Adopt and develop 16 national career clusters3. Adopt policies to establish guidelines for awarding
high school credit to student demonstration of subject area competency (instead of or in combination with classroom instruction)

method by which students can demonstrate readiness in reading, writing, and mathematics for postsecondary coursework
5. Define college-readiness standards in reading, writing, and mathematics needed for success in advanced training, certificate programs, and associate’s/bachelor’s programs

determine postsecondary readiness in reading, writing, and mathematics and inform students of their performance no later than the end of 10th grade
7. Develop transitional courses in reading, writing, math for 11th and 12th grade students who fail to meet readiness standards
8. Ensure dual credit courses reflect postsecondary coursework
House Bill 186 Activities9. Collaborate so that appropriate credits are
awarded at high school and postsecondary level for “embedded courses”
10.Adopt policies addressing demonstration of “subject area competency”
11.Establish conditions under which a student may earn dual credit for high school courses

credit courses and make them available to LEAs and eligible institutions
13.Create guidelines for students in the Georgia Youth Apprenticeship Program to earn credit upon completing a planned training experience
