Euroculture at the University of Groningen

The University of Groningen belongs to the global top 100 universities on the three most im-portant ranking lists (Shanghai, THE and QS World University Rankings).

The international faculty of Euroculture hold doctoral degrees in a variety of disciplines, such as history, cultural studies, political science, European law, Eu-ropean studies and international relations.

The academic and research focus in Groningen is on cultural and political identities in the the national and European context. Concepts such as “citizen-ship” are important elements in seminars and U.S. and East Asia relations feature prominently in Gro-ningen. However, the topics that are debated and researched are not limited to these geographical areas, nor to a particular perspective. Euroculture students have written and presented papers and MA theses on a wide variety of topics. Groningen stress-es the importance of acquiring practical skills that prepare for your future role in society: project work, debating, communication, etc.

Euroculture Groningen organises various excursions and activities in order to translate theory into prac-tice. A highlight of the programme in Groningen is the three-day excursion to Brussels. You will be able to learn both in and outside of the classroom by ex-periencing Master-level education within an interna-tional environment.

Euroculture: Society, Politics and Culture in a Global Context

The Erasmus Mundus Master Euroculture: Society, Politics and Culture in a Global Context is a unique interdisciplinary and multi-university programme focused on questions of cultural identities and so-cial values that play a vital role in today’s debates about Europe and its place in the world. The pro-gramme consists of 4 semesters (120 ECTS) and is offered by a Consortium of 8 European and 4 non-European partners.

Euroculture offers great opportunities if you are in-terested in understanding - and shaping - today’s Europe. Selected by the European Commission as an Erasmus Mundus Master of Excellence, Eurocul-ture is ideal for students who understand that Eu-rope’s future will be shaped not only by economics and politics, but also by struggles over identities, values, and heritage - in other words, students who are interested in the interplay between cul-ture and politics in society.

Why Groningen?

As the economic and cultural capital of the region, the city of Groningen enjoys a lively reputation, while retaining a close community feel.

What will probably strike you most when enter-ing Groningen is its youthful population. Rough-ly a quarter of the city’s 195.000 inhabitants are students. The university has a visible presence: the his- toric buildings in the inner-city tell the tale of a rich academic tradition, while the University Medical Center Groningen is an example of eye-catching contemporary architecture. Moreover, many of the cultural activities taking place in the city are organ-ised for or by students.

With the city’s many bars, restaurants, theatres, museums, parks and sports facilities, you will never be bored. There are countless activities offered for (international) students. But if you do feel like leav-ing the vibrant city life, the countryside is never far away either. You can clear your head while enjoying the flat landscape and limitless view in all directions when you get nearer to the “Wadden Sea”, for ex-ample.
