A person’s career perspective is how he or she views their long-term career goals.

The perspective includes concepts such as which type of job is most suitable for a person…

…the path he or she should take in order to excel and how long they should expect to keep the job.

The following are some ideas that should be embraced when setting out on your career search in 2016.

ACCEPT THAT EMPLOYMENT

MAY CHANGE

There used to be a time when people could select a career and expect to stay on that same job for the duration of their lives.

Economic factors and changes in lifestyle and company culture make that objective almost impossible nowadays.

The modern employee or career holder should expect to change occupations at least once during the course of his or her life.

Such may occur more than two times in a location where turnover is high and the overall age and maturity level of executives is low.

Workers should not be discouraged, however, because long-lasting careers are still out there to be found.

SEEK JOBS THAT MATCH YOUR PERSONALITY

A person who seeks to spend a lifetime on a career will have to select jobs that match his or her personality.

Mismatched choices will almost definitely reduce a person’s length of stay in a particular job.

Speaking to a career counselor and taking advantage of career assessments can help to pinpoint areas of interest which better suit your personality.

BE REALISTIC ABOUT THE COMPETITION

One way that modern-day job applicants mess up is by being unrealistic. More than 5 percent of people in the United States alone are out of work.

That means that many people are often competing for the same job positions.

In fact, some employers have changed their hiring process to allow a large number of applicants, sometimes as many as 100, to come in for group interviews.

It is important for modern-day job seekers to be realistic about the number of people competing for jobs these days and the effort that it takes to stand out and be selected over other applicants.

The days of walking into a place of employment and walking out with a job are almost gone now.

REALIZE THAT CREDENTIALS AND EXPERIENCEDON’T ALWAYS EQUAL PROMOTIONS

Another area that people need to adjust with their career perspective is the area of promotions.
