Chardin was born in 1699 and died in 1779. He seemed to praise the simple goodness of ordinary people, especially mothers and young children. He spent most of his career painting stills of people who lived far from the corrupt society. Chardin was the poet of the commonplace and the master of its nuances. In the painting, Grace at the Table, Chardin uses hushed lighting and mellow color.

He uses tenebrism in the foreground to highlight the narrative that is being depicted.
