What is Career Life Connections (CLC 12)?

A 2-credit Career Education course required for graduation

Career Life Connections (CLC):

• CLC replaces the content of the old Grad Transitions

Course and focuses on three major themes to prepare

you for life after high school:

• Personal Development (preparation for post graduation)

• Connections to Community (perspectives and transferable skills)

• Career life plan (career, finances, education, health & well being)

• Minimum of 30 hours career exploration and/or volunteer opportunities

Delivery of CLC at DSS for 2019-2020:

• Students will have a CLC 12 course on their timetable

(Blocks A – H or Block J if they already have 8 courses)

• Students will report to the library to work with their CLC

Coordinator and administrator

• Course will be offered through either Google Classroom or

MyBlueprint (to be determined by the coordinator)

Delivery of CLC at DSS for 2019-2020:

• Students will complete the curricular competencies

(activities, assignments, etc.) online with the goal of

completing the course by December 1st

• Plan: September – Admin & Coordinator in the library to support

you with starting the course

• October – November: Tuesday & Thursday check in’s for course

and Capstone Project

• Once course is complete, it will become a study block for you

Assessment of CLC at DSS in 2019 – 2020:

• You will receive a numeric mark (%) on your transcripts

(mark will be posted as a final mark in June)

• Looking at combination of rubrics, self-assessment and

personal conferences with your Career Coordinator

• Assignments will be submitted to Google classroom or

MyBlueprint (tbd)

• Students will create a portfolio on MyBlueprint to document

evidence of learning as well as for their capstone project

CAPSTONE IS A PASSION PROJECT

• A Capstone Project allows you to demonstrate your

interest in learning about a particular topic.

• Ideally, your focus would be in an area you are passionate

about and anticipate you will be pursuing after graduation.

• Your Capstone Project should be a topic that you are

passionate (interested) in learning more about.

• You will present your Capstone in early February

Delivery of Capstone Project at DSS:

• Capstone Project & CLC run concurrently (at the same

time).• During your CLC block you can utilize that time to work on the course content

(CLC) or your Capstone (Project & Presentation)

• Capstone Presentations are tentatively scheduled to take place in

the first week of February 2020 (more details later)

• MyBlueprint will be required for your digital portfolio and Capstone

Project.

• You may begin thinking about and beginning your planning for the

capstone now (requirements to follow)

PROPOSAL

• Description of your capstone, why you are interested in it,

how will your mentor help?

• Your proposal must be approved by your career

coordinator

MENTOR

• You are required to have a mentor for your capstone

project.

• An experienced person in the field who will provide you with

knowledge along the way.

• In addition to your career coordinator, your mentor will support,

coach, assess and even evaluate you, so be sure to have a good

relationship!

Beginning Your Proposal:

1. Generalize: Determine the general area of interest.

• Example: Business, Arts, Science, etc.

2. Narrow down the subject: Determine a specific area of

interest. Why are you doing this?

2. Choose a capstone area: What is the best way to

showcase your capstone?

OPTION 1: INQUIRY/RESEARCH CAPSTONE

• Develop new arguments or insights about your topic.

• For students who want to further explore, research or gain

knowledge

• Example: Researching questions such as does social media play

an integral role in a marketing campaign?

• Example: Is the use of plastics in everyday life having a

profound effect on the sustainability of our environment?

OPTION 2: EVENT/SERVICE CAPSTONE

• Research, create and host your own event

• For students with an interest in making a positive contribution

to their community or in an area they are passionate about

• Examples: organizing a sporting event, coaching a team, special

awareness week, fundraising event, etc.

• Example: Organize and run a clothing drive for a homeless shelter.

OPTION 3: PROJECT BASED CAPSTONE

• Construct a tangible object (you can see, touch, smell,

listen, look at)

• For students who wish to express their passion and

interest through a physical project

• Examples: Create a video game or application, design build a

guitar, construct a 3D model of a building, compose an original

piece of music or art, etc.

OPTION 4: CAREER/ENTREPRENEUR CAPSTONE

• Start a new business.

• For students with an entrepreneurial interest who are

looking into a personal business after graduation• Examples: Personalized computer services for seniors, developing a

tutoring program for students, etc.

PORTFOLIO (Evidence of the Process)

• Using MyBlueprint, you will create a Capstone Portfolio to

inlucde:

• Journal of your progress

• Personal reflections of the “process” highlighting successes,

challenges, growth in areas like core competencies, skills and

knowledge

• Evidence of your work.

• Any documentation (blue prints, drafts, correspondence, etc.)

PRESENTATION (Early February 2020)

• Capstone Presentation is an opportunity to show your work

and professionalism• 7-10 minute presentation with a 3 minute question period from your interviewer

(similar to Grad Transitions Process)

• Your capstone project

• Evidence of Growth in Core Competencies as a result of this process

• Options for you moving forward?

• Reflection: What did you learn? How did it go? Where to next?

Final Words• Your Capstone Project has the ability to have huge

relevance for you and can serve multiple purposes.

• Your Capstone can also supplement the following: • To support you with post secondary entrance requirements,

• To support you with post secondary or district scholarships,

• To support your future career employment or a culminating demonstration of

your personal growth, development and achievement.
