Nicky Morgan: Mr Speaker, I am pleased to be able to tell the House that Christine Hodgson, Chair of Capgemini UK and someone with a strong track record of developing young talent, will chair a new careers and enterprise company for schools.

Conservative

No clear policies announced so far. But…• They have largely kept faith with the National Careers

Service• Recently U-turned on school career guidance and

launched the new careers company.


Labour

• Have made political capital out of the Conservative’s policy failures on careers.

• Tristram Hunt has said some positive (but non-specific) things about career education and guidance.

• Rumours that an announcement is imminent. Possibly something about local clusters of schools, possibly something about accountability to the proposed Directors of School Standards.


Liberal Democrats

Nick Clegg gave a speech on the 27th February 2014 on career guidance. • “we’re going to make sure that every young person gets

good careers advice and guidance at school”• UCAS style system for all 16 year olds• Support for NEETs through Jobcentre Plus.

Is this the government or the LibDems?


UKIP

• Don’t seem to have said anything on career guidance that I can find.


Green

• No policy currently announced. • Caroline Lucas was a strong advocate of career guidance

during the cuts to Connexions.


Nationalists

• SNP has been a supporter of Skills Development Scotland.

• Plaid Cymru seem to have little to say on the issue.

In a hung parliament

• Careers is unlikely to get much attention. • Although it is an issue that it is possible to build cross-

party support on. • The critical role that the SNP are likely to play could see

the devolution of Jobcentre Plus.

• Most likely outcome: The current policy limps on for at least a year after the election.


In conclusion

• At present the political parties have yet to declare their hands.

• None have done any serious thinking about career education and guidance.

• The election is unlikely to result in the emergence of a decisive new careers policy.

…. but, a week is a long time in politics.
