PRESIDENT’S REPORT 14

th CDANZ AGM, Wellington, 14 November 2011

It is my pleasure to provide the President’s report for 2010-2011.

2011 has given thrown up some real challenges. After an earthquake last year, those living in Canterbury have had to manage their daily lives around continuous aftershocks that have delivered more destruction and disruption than could have ever been anticipated. Workplaces and homes are still disrupted which has a tremendous impact on the day-to-day lives of residents. I am full of admiration for Koa (CDANZ Administrator) and our members, who continue to meet deadlines, maintain contact and remain optimistic, all while helping others to do the same. At times like these the need for career development services is heightened rather than decreased. Here’s hoping the earth settles and recovery can gain some momentum.

The National Executive team for 2010-2011:

Megan Smith President, Treasurer Liaison, Membership

Ivan Hodgetts has been Vice-President and managing the portfolio of Strategy and Policy.

Claire Pearce has continued in the role of Secretary.

Ruth Missen has continued with responsibility for Branch Liaison and Professional Development and also taken on ACC Liaison.

Pat Cody continued to manage Communication and the E-zine.

Vicki Summerfield was responsible for Membership until February 2011.

Other key contributors to the Association include:

The role of Finance Officer is maintained by Margaret Hadfield

Through earthquakes and aftershocks Koa Saxby has continued to fulfil the vital role of CDANZ Administrator.

Our Branch Chairs and sub-committee’s – they put in many hours to sourcing, organising and running professional development in the regions. I give a heartfelt thanks to all of these members for the time they give to enhance the professionalism, skills and knowledge of all CDANZ members.

Northland – Jennifer Ross, Shirley Harvey, Pat Nepia Auckland – Dee Ann Freeman, Caroline Sandford, Jan Hayhow Waikato – Jillena Paekau, Mariella Trynes, Catherine White Bay of Plenty – Ruth Missen, Nick Ball Taranaki - Michelle Coronno, Jennie Miller, Mary Pollard Hawkes Bay / Gisborne – Eddie Carson, Richard Sevicke-Jones, Russell Booth Manawatu - Jane Stella, Amanda Crossan, Liz Chandler Wellington – Jenny Miller, Claire Pearce, Liz Gray, Lindsey Gott Nelson / Marlborough - Eunice Creswell, Michelle Devries, Jude Van Wichen Miller Canterbury / Westland – Chris Bridgman, Marilyn Frew Otago / Southland – Glenys Ker, Jane Field, Shane Heasley

Focus for 2010-2011 It has been a very busy year for a small Executive Committee, and while there is often a feel of one step forward and two back, a number of activities aligned to our Constitution and Strategic Direction have been undertaken. 1. Recognising and valuing members - In the past year we have made it possible to claim

Professional Development hours for contributing to CDANZ through delivering PD, making Ezine contributions and taking on roles at Branch or National level, this goes some way to recognising the significant contribution made by these people to the wider Association. Externally we have worked hard to promote the work of our members through the Careers Summit and in our meetings with ACC, Business NZ and others.

2. National voice for professional career development practice –

a. Publication of our Strategic Direction. This document has proven very valuable in articulating what CDANZ is all about to external parties, as well as providing a clear reference point for the Association when considering where to devote resources.

b. In addition to continued representation on the Vocational Services Review working party, several meetings have taken place directly with ACC management outlining the value CDANZ professional members offer in the delivery of vocational rehabilitation services. In particular, the idea of a special interest group as a mechanism for support, information and the promotion of standards is seen as having potential for the purposes of both CDANZ and ACC.

c. CDANZ attended the first New Zealand Careers Summit on July 7, 2011. Hosted by Careers NZ, this summit brought together senior leaders from the public and private sector for a focused discussion on how to ‘join the dots’ to ensure the career system works for both employers and individuals, and contributes to economic growth in New Zealand. The Career Summit goal, themes, and key issues have been given feedback and we await the finalised version.

Summit Objectives: We aim to

give participants the opportunity to share their views on how an ideal careers system should work

identify steps and actions Careers New Zealand will lead to achieve these improvements establish a continuing dialogue between Careers New Zealand and others in the sector

d. Continued involvement in the NZ Country Team (consisting of representatives from CDANZ,

Careers NZ, NZCER, Ministry of Education, Department of Labour and Ministry of Social Development) for the International Symposium on Career Development and Public Policy. The aims of the Symposium are to build closer dialogues and linkages between career guidance policy makers in the fields of education, employment, economic development and social inclusion, and with strategic professional leaders and researchers. The four representatives (including CDANZ) of the NZ Team will be attending the Sixth International Symposia (IS2011) in Hungary December 2011, which has the following sub-themes:

Political, economic and social changes and the changing role of career guidance and career guidance policies.

Lifelong guidance policy as a part of integrated human resource development policies – challenges and opportunities.

The changing world and the changing role of career guidance – skills and competencies for lifelong guidance practitioners.

Evidence-based practice; evidence-based policies.

The value in CDANZ involvement on the NZ Symposium Team is realised at both a national and international level. The Symposium offers the best chance currently available to work directly

on career development policy and representation with relevant government and research organisations within New Zealand. CDANZ’s profile is enhanced significantly through this activity. In addition, it offers a considerable opportunity to build our relationships with other national career development associations and researchers. An example of what comes from these types of relationships includes being sought to contribute comment and information for a UK career development report to government.

e. Further development of our relationship with Business NZ. Like CDANZ, Business NZ has had representation on the ACC Vocational Services Review working party and at the Careers Summit. We have initiated opportunities to increase dialogue and understanding of who we each represent through Ezine contribution, face-to-face meeting and email conversation.

f. Attendance at the CDAA (Career Development Association of Australia) conference, including meetings with their Executive and representatives from IAEVG, CATE and NCDA regarding collaboration opportunities.

g. Expanding and enhancing our external relationships with organisations or groups such as, CATE and the Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs.

h. Continued contribution to a Learning State (state sector ITO) career practice working party for the development of Assessor Guides for the career development unit standards.

3. Enhancing CDANZ’s role as an inclusive professional association that welcomes all individuals working in the various fields of career development practice - A joint application by ASENZ (Association for Supported Employment in NZ) and CDANZ, to the Working Together More Fund – He Pūtea Mahi Tahi, resulted in $4,000 to fund a working party to establish a clear pathway for members between the associations. The working party currently consists of two representatives from each association, Megan Smith and Ruth Missen (CDANZ), and Ian Harper (ASENZ) and Emma Carreon (ASENZ / CDANZ). The first meeting established the terms of the working party and initiated a review of the level 6 Diploma in Supported Employment against CDANZ competencies. This review will also provide CDANZ with a valuable opportunity to consider how qualifications contribute to the development of relevant competencies in individuals.

4. Honour the spirit of partnership as expressed in the Treaty of Waitangi – Co-hosting the Career Research Symposium with AUT this year allowed us to continue to promote relevant research with the career development sector. It also afforded us an opportunity to reflect on our ability to respond appropriately at a traditional powhiri while enhancing our sense of being part of a unified group. A project to develop a CDANZ waiata rose from this reflection. We feel that having our own waiata allows us to be better prepared, to sing something of meaning to us as an Association, and it will allow for all attending members to join in with something they know. As the Career Research Symposium made a profit this year, and has not required renewed financial input from the Association, the creation of a CDANZ waiata will be covered from that unused budget.

Focus for 2012

Continued progress in refining our representation to projects and organisations for the benefit the Association. This will be enhanced through the continuation of the CDANZ Executive Committee meeting in Wellington, where the allocation of a half day for external meetings is proving very beneficial for profile raising and the development of mutually beneficial relationships.

Continued development of our tools of communication with members and other interested parties. Expansion of Interest Groups on LinkedIn – possibly to include individual pages on CDANZ website. To add a formal regular communication with external parties interested in our activities.

The Career Research Symposium continues to mature as an event and 2012 will be a fantastic opportunity to develop it further.

An online Professional Development database for members to record and report on their annual professional development hours.

And many more projects which will develop as the year progresses and new Executive Committee members bring their particular interests and energy to the Committee.

As always, I would like to thank the members of CDANZ. It is impossible to demonstrate credibility and professionalism as an Association without it these being established at grassroots by CDANZ members. It is an honour to lead the Association, and along with all members, contribute to our growing mana within the national and international career development sector.

Megan Smith National President

STRATEGY AND POLICY REPORT 14

th CDANZ AGM, Wellington, 14 November 2011

This has been managed by Ivan Hodgetts for 2010-2011. Activities For The Year: The strategy and policy focus for this year has been to consider submissions to government or other agencies as required, and most importantly, to look broadly across the direction of the organisation and establish a platform for ensuring a coherent representation of who we are and our purpose. This scoping exercise has resulted in the development of a statement of Strategic Vision for the Association. This one page statement provides a clear sense of the organisation’s purpose and role. It has proven invaluable in recent meetings with organisations such as ACC and other government and non-government stakeholders. This document helps to steer Executive deliberations and focus our organisational energy. We can ask of our actions as an Exec: does this align with our strategic direction? How will this activity further our intent? What are the benefits? We are also able to be reflective and ask over time if the issues arising for the organisation suggest that we need to shift our strategy to better fit with the contemporary landscape. Members providing vocational rehabilitation services will be aware that ACC has undergone significant review of its service models. The Exec has been active in discussion with ACC to ensure a continued and robust role for CDANZ members. We recently submitted a document to ACC titled ‘Proposal for Special Interest Group and Competency Review in Response to Accident Compensation Corporation Review of Vocational Services’ (see CDANZ website). Further meetings will be held to progress this dialogue. A review of our practitioner competencies has also been undertaken. It is the opinion of the Executive that the competencies are ‘fit for purpose’ at present. However, we have taken the opportunity to align a foreword to those competencies with our current statement of strategic direction. The Year Ahead: The coming year will see further work to progress the strategic direction - most obviously working to establish special interests groups in areas such as vocational rehabilitation, but also in enhancing the Association’s role in Career Development for New Zealanders. The discussions with ACC will progress into 2012 and are likely to result in enhancements to our competency statements. It is likely that input from interested members will be sought as we firm up a potentially revised relationship between CDANZ and organisations such as ACC.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT 14

th CDANZ AGM, Wellington, 14 November 2011

Key Activities

The membership committee is currently based in Hamilton. Megan Smith is the Executive member responsible for membership, and the other committee members are Jill Bergin, Mariella Trynes, Tim and Juliana Smithells. In February, they took over from the previous Christchurch-based committee of Vicki Summerfield, Karen Erkklia, Kathy Jones, Derek McCullum and Jacquie Walker. A sincere thank you goes to all the committee members (past and present) for both the time they dedicate to the role and their genuine commitment to ensuring CDANZ applies its policies and criteria in a fair and consistent manner. The committee meets regularly throughout the year in order to manage the membership applications and renewals in accordance to the criteria set out in the Constitution and supporting documents. Key Tasks: 1. To process applications for Associate and Professional membership and applications to up- grade

from Associate to Professional Membership.

2. To process applications for renewal of membership by auditing and approving a member’s annual professional development record.

3. To receive, process and document existing professional members’ proof of eligibility under the 2008 criteria.

Numbers: There have been 13 membership committee meetings in the period 1 Apr 10 – 31 Mar 11. In this period the association had new members join: Professional 4, Associate 5, and Subscriber 23. As at the 31 March 2011 the association had 486 members, 324 Professional, 67 Associate, 95 Subscriber, 1 Life, and 1 Honorary. The global financial crisis has had a negative impact on many organisations including CDANZ. For our Association, the impact has been on the reduced number of people joining or renewing their membership. We know, for example, some employers of CDANZ members are not replacing individuals who leave, or have been actively reducing their staffing numbers. Along with events like the Canterbury earthquakes this has contributed to an overall loss of 25 members over the past financial year. Proof of Eligibility: The process of Proof of Eligibility was established to ensure all existing Professional Members at the time the membership criteria changed in 2008 could demonstrate that they met the new criteria. As at September 2011, 122 members have had their proof of eligibility under the new criteria approved. Existing Professional Members are reminded of the requirement to have their eligibility approved by Jan 1 2013 – documentation for this can be found under the Official Document page in the member’s area of the website.

Professional Development: The range of professional development undertaken by the vast majority of members is huge and indicates a thoughtful approach to ensure the activities undertaken meet the following markers

Relevant to work context

Varied

Cost effective The Guidelines for Completion of Professional Development form (website – Official Documents page or Join CDANZ page) give examples of suitable activities as well as information on the hours members can claim for some roles taken on within CDANZ. Discussions about professional development have also taken place on LinkedIn and these have been a great source of information and ideas.

Moving Forward – What’s Coming Remit 18: In auditing professional development diaries it is clear that a huge variation exists in the detail included and, despite the template available, in the way they are presented. This adds to the amount of time it takes to audit the dairies and to the confusion that exists around requirements. To simplify this, remit 18 of this AGM proposes a move to audit no less than 10% of diaries in each member category. Electronic Diaries: An electronic professional development database - which will include features such as automated electronic renewal notification and the ability of attendees to select from pre-populated activities - will be integrated into the website. The purpose of this is to enable greater consistency of information captured, improved reporting capabilities, a less labour intensive renewal process, and clarity and ease of use for members. This is budgeted for the 2011/12 financial year and will be funded in part from the administration savings generated from the more automated system.

BRANCH LIAISON REPORT 14

th CDANZ AGM, Wellington, 14 November 2011

The role this year has been managed by Ruth Missen. The Branch Liaison role has continued to develop over the year with the primary function allowing an easy communication pathway between our CDANZ Branches and National Executive. Contact from branches has mostly been positive and the demand faced by many branches last year to encourage people to take up local committee roles such as Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer has not been so daunting. There has been a willingness from many to step into these roles and there has been a continuity of office holders over the branches throughout the year. It has been heartening to be in contact with branches and witness the drive and energy that people have put into branch meetings and professional development. I have felt privileged to be involved with assisting in the organisation of professional development in individual branches and helping smooth the financial and organisational process. Again it has been a tough year economically for many of our members, and significantly they have looked to their branches for the provision of variety professional development opportunities as attending training and courses away from their home areas has become expensive. Meeting these needs can be difficult and many of our branches have managed tremendously. We continue to encourage branches to use the E-zine to promote their activities and keep us all informed of what they are doing. Next year the Executive hopes to be able to get out and meet more members through their branch meetings. This year has been a full and busy one for us and operating with reduced numbers has presented challenges for us all. With our increase in CDANZ Executive numbers, next year looks very promising! The symposium in Auckland in July this year provided us with an opportunity to put names to faces, as will today’s AGM. We look forward to a productive year with you all.

COMMUNICATION AND E-ZINE REPORT 14

th CDANZ AGM, Wellington, 14 November 2011

The role this year has been managed by Pat Cody. The communication role has primarily focussed on producing the E-zine. The E-zine is released quarterly with a range of themes. Feedback from some CDANZ membership has been generally positive around the E-zine presentation and content. Members have also voiced what they would like to see and in what format. Changes in the format have been made as a result of this feedback. There have also been members who have contributed to the publication which has been very positive and I would fully encourage this for the future. Readership of the Ezine has also steadily increased. This has been measured through google analytics. When the Ezine has been published there have been noticeable spikes of people accessing the publication from the website. This has been very affirming and motivating for myself and co-editor Jean Ottley. The Ezine has focussed on three themes with the publication:

Presentation: I have had the good fortune of working with Jean Ottley in the publication of the E-zine. Jean has brought a real professional touch with the Ezine ensuring that formatting, layout and presenting is consistent. Her eye for detail has been really valued. The outcome is a publication that is polished and presentable for CDANZ membership but also external readers.

Coverage: The E-zine has been directed at key career issues and we have sought external input. This had lead to the development or the regular input of key agencies such as the Department of Labour, Careers New Zealand, Education and Business community. The benefit of this, I hope, is that this has increased profile of the career industry in the external environment and further developed and deepened relationships.

Linkage: The E-zine is now linked to the CDANZ LinkedIn profile. This has been seen as a way of generating conversation around issues and articles. I believe there is more potential in doing this.

Future Of The E-zine Although I am coming off the National Executive – I have made a commitment to continue with the E-zine until the end of 2012. The National Exec will give me direction regarding relevant content for the publication. My and Jean’s focus is to continue producing a relevant Ezine that members value, seeking input by members into the publication, produce a publication that drills down on important issues and continues to link into other social media. Always keen to work with other members who have other ideas.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REPORT 14

th CDANZ AGM, Wellington, 14 November 2011

The role this year has been managed by Ruth Missen. Primarily this year our focus was to provide the opportunity to present a range of professional development opportunities for our CDANZ members at a national and branch level. At branch level this was supported by contacting branches and acting on the specific requests presented. Branches have continued to offer quality PD around the country. The PD presented has come from a broad variety of areas which has been heartening to see. Topics have included social media, web counselling, book reviews, labour market trends, business alliances, professional supervision, The Role and Options of Psychological Tests in Career Development, Career Development and Mental Health and Creative and Critical Thinking Skills. Avery big thank-you is also extended to Tui Needham who organised Gray Poehnell’s visit to New Zealand and subsequent workshops (Hope Filled Engagement and Career Integrity and Career Crossroads) that were held around the country. Sincere thanks also go to the teams of people and individuals constantly seeking quality PD within our branches that have made this all possible. At an Executive level, we responded to a very favourable response from our membership in regard to offering the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® training programme at a reduced rate through CPP Asia Pacific. Unfortunately the programme was unable to go ahead despite the interest and the vastly reduced rate provided by CPP. The general feedback from those interested was mostly a change in their economic situation. At a wider level of good relationships were forged with CPP and we may be able to look at a similar offer in the future. A key professional development opportunity this year included the 4th National Careers Research Symposium co-sponsored by Auckland University of Technology and CDANZ. Dale Furbish and his team not only did a fabulous job in organising this event, but also volunteered to take over the symposium from Canterbury University who were so terribly affected by the devastating earthquakes to hit Christchurch. The day however included inspiring presentations of the challenges Cantabrian’s are facing in regard to career development in a vastly changed landscape. At this point we hope that Canterbury University will host the 2012 Career Research Symposium. Professional members are continuing to meet their required 50 hours of professional development. However as reported last year, our members have continued huge concerns in regard to the recession, their work stability and the actual value of 50 hours professional development. The challenge of where our members allocate their time and money has continued to be an issue, and the Executive are addressing this today with a remit offering change to professional development hours. We have utilised the AGM day as a time to provide professional development for our members and this year is no exception. We are delighted to bring Sir Robert Jones and Ray and Dai Henwood to our AGM and expect robust and enhanced learning to take place. 2012 is seeing us focus on the CDANZ Code of Ethics and Code of Practice and assessing whether they still meet the current needs of our members and clients. We hope to engage Sue Mortlock with the assistance of Fran Parkin to run workshops for our branches exploring this. We also anticipate bringing an international speaker to New Zealand again. Funding Funding in terms of branch capitation grants has continued and one branch accessed extra funding to run a branch event. We also assisted in flights for Gray Poehnell. We continue to offer funding towards research with the Research Dissemination Fund and the Research Recognition Fund. This money was

not accessed this year and as we are heading towards a Research Symposium later in 2012 we encourage our members to utilise this financial opportunity. My special thanks go to all of those who have contributed to the professional development of our organisation, and their ongoing commitment to the value and ethics of CDANZ.

FINANCE REPORT 14

th CDANZ AGM, Wellington, 14 November 2011

Financial Report for the year ended 31 March 2011 I have pleasure in presenting the annual financial report for the year ended 31 March 2011 During this financial year there was a decrease in Income from Subscriptions of over $10,000. This resulted from a combination of dropping membership and a change in the mix of types of membership i.e. there are proportionately more members paying lower subscriptions. The expenses have also decreased for this year so this has enabled the Association to maintain a surplus after tax of over $5,000. Most expenses have been consistent with the previous year the major changes being:

A decrease in professional development expenses. During the previous year an additional one-off PD payment was made to each of the branches. Also, one of the major PD events for this year was held at the AGM and included in the AGM expense.

An increase in AGM expenses. This was partly because of the PD as explained above, but also the AGM costs were exceptionally low in 2010 as the event was held at the National Conference.

Financial Officer Expenses increased as this is the first time a full years expenses have been incurred.

Our Incorporated Society status provides us with a tax exemption on up to $1,000 of interest income so we only pay tax on interest in excess of this amount and a provision has been made for this in the accounts. We do not pay income tax on subscriptions received. The surplus has meant an increase in the total for General Funds and Reserves (or Net Worth) of the Association. There has been a resultant increase in total cash in Bank Accounts of over $7,000. All GST returns, Tax Returns and Incorporated Society returns are up to date. A Compilation Report has been prepared for these accounts by Chartered Accountants. A scanned copy of the competed audited accounts are attached to this report. Margaret Hadfield Financial Officer
