School District 6 provides a quality education for every learner within a system of high expectations and rigorous, focused instruction.

Students and Parents,

Welcome to the Greeley-Evans Weld County School District 6 Registration

Handbook. In this document you will find all you will need regarding registration for

classes for the upcoming school year. As you proceed through this manual you will see

that it is broken into two parts.

The first part consists of general information pertenant to all students which

includes online registration instructions, credit check sheets, NCAA guidelines, and

other pieces of information. Please make sure that you carefully review all of this

material to determine the best choices and selections to make during the course

registration process.

The second part of this manual includes an in-depth look at all 22 clusters that

are represented in District 6. Each cluster overview offers a detailed look at both in-

school and out of school opportunities, as well as post-secondary options for students to

consider. Students will always have the option to change their clusters as they see fit. It

is vital that all District 6 students have a clearly organized structure when considering

the classes that will benefit them the most.

A separate Course Description book is available on the District 6 website and in

your school counselor’s office. Please feel free to contact your teachers, counselors, and

building adminstrators should you have any questions regarding the registration

process. Thank you.

Greeley Central High School

Performing and Visual Arts Magnet Program

The Greeley Central High School AMP (Arts Magnet Program) is founded on the belief that students of the arts are well-rounded, intelligent, motivated, and creative achievers who are involved in and concerned about their school, neighborhood, city, and their world. All incoming freshmen take the Arts and Culture class, a one semester course in which they are exposed to six weeks of instruction in each of the three major strands of the magnet: theatre/dance, music, and visual art. Magnet students are highly encouraged to take courses from all three strands. As part of their immersion in the arts, and to support each other, all Magnet students are required to take a minimum of one course in their chosen area per semester.

Music Strand The MUSIC STRAND students develop and refine their ability to read, play, and compose music. Immersed in all aspects of music, they transcribe songs, sight-read accurately and expressively, and analyze music as to musical elements, expressive devices, compositional devices and techniques, and use of form. Numerous large and small group, and solo concerts and recitals are held throughout the year.

Theatre/Dance Strand The THEATRE/DANCE STRAND offers an exciting, comprehensive variety of opportunities for beginning through advanced levels of study and experience. Courses include work in dance and acting techniques, as well as performance skills, directing and stagecraft. Acting and dance classes provide students with performance opportunities in and out of class. Drama and dance students also explore other areas of the theatre/dance such as history, play analysis, choreography, technical theatre design and production.

Visual Arts Strand The VISUAL ARTS STRAND deepen and broadens students’ investigation of the subject while improving their techniques and developing a style. Building on their previous work with the elements of art and principles of design, they now discuss, analyze, and synthesize the use of those elements and principles and apply them to create their own work. Many opportunities are given to individual and group exhibitions, both at school and in the community.

Greeley West High School

International Baccalaureate Program

The IB Diploma Program The Greeley District 6 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, housed at Greeley West High School, is one example of the district providing opportunities for students to challenge themselves academically. This program, taught in over 2600 schools in 134 different countries, features high academic standards, an international curriculum, critical thinking skills, and responsible citizenship in the school and community. Unlike other programs where students may select a few accelerated classes, IB develops simultaneous learning in six accelerated subjects in both the junior and the senior year of high school. In addition, students write a college-style research paper, spend 150 hours in creative/community service activities, and participate in a thinking skills class called “Theory of Knowledge.” Advantages of the IB Diploma program include increased academic challenges for academically gifted students, development of study skills necessary for a successful college experience, and university credits awarded for IB course work throughout the United States and the rest of the world. In order to help students get prepared for this rigorous and challenging style of education; the IB Middle Years Program is open to freshmen and sophomores and directly feeds into the IB Diploma classes in the junior year. Introduction The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is a non-profit educational foundation based in Cardiff, Wales, that offers a Primary Years Program for elementary students, a Middle Years Program for grades 6-10, and a Diploma Program for students in their final two years of secondary school. Through comprehensive and balanced curricula coupled with challenging assessments, the IBO aims to assist Greeley/Evans School District 6 in our endeavor to develop the individual talents of our young people as we teach them to relate the experiences of the classroom to the realities of the world outside. Beyond intellectual rigor and high academic standards, IB places strong emphasis on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship. Our end is that IB students become critical thinkers, lifelong learners and informed participants in local and world affairs, conscious of all peoples’ shared humanity respectful of all cultures. IB Diploma Program Curriculum High academic standards, international understanding, critical thinking, and responsible citizenship are all stressed in IB. IB Diploma Program curriculum is based on concurrent learning and IB students study six areas in the same year. However, there is a provision for juniors to test two Standard Level (SL) exams at the end of the junior year. The remainder of the IB subjects is tested in their senior year including a minimum of 3 Higher Level (HL) exams. Nevertheless, the IB curriculum is equivalent to students taking at least nine AP classes in their high school career.

SL courses = a minimum of 150 hours HL courses = a minimum of 240 hours The six subject areas of IB are comprised of the following offerings: 1. Language A is the language of instruction at the school. It is the literature and writing

component of IB. At Greeley West, Language A is the required English/Language Arts program. Students are tested in Language A at HL.

2. Language B is the acquisition of a foreign language. At GWHS, Language B is one of two offerings; Spanish and French. This is normally tested at SL although we have had a few students with adequate knowledge to test this at HL.

3. Individuals and Societies - At GWHS, this course is the required History of the Americas. It is tested at HL.

4. Experimental Sciences - At GWHS, there are three options for science. They are Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Biology is offered at HL and Physics and Chemistry are tested SL.

5. Mathematics - At GWHS, math is offered as Math SL, Math Studies SL, or Math HL. Some have even taken Further Mathematics for their sixth subject.

43

Greeley West High School

International Baccalaureate Program

6. The Arts and Electives - At GWHS, students may take Visual Arts, Theatre Arts, Music or an additional subject from groups 1-5. The above arts classes are offered at both HL and SL.

The IB Diploma Program has three very unique characteristics in addition to the strengths of its traditional liberal arts curriculum. They are:

Theory of Knowledge - TOK TOK is a required interdisciplinary 100 hour course that is intended to give the students a chance to critically reflect on the knowledge gained inside and outside of the classroom. It challenges them to question the basis of knowledge. Creativity/Action/Service - CAS The CAS requirement is key to keeping students balanced between academic work and the life outside of the classroom. Participation in theatre, sports and community service activities encourage students to share their energy and special talents. All IB Diploma students are required to clock over 150 hours in the junior and senior years. No credit or pay may be received for CAS activities. Volunteering is an important way to make your world better. Extended Essay IB Students are also required to write a 4000 word extended essay. The students research and complete this essay in a topic of their choosing that reflects their own special interest or area of passion. A supervisor is chosen from the staff at GWHS to help them perfect this paper.

Exams and the Awarding of the Diploma In the spring of their senior year, students will take the remainder of the exams not taken in their junior year. The exams are sent off to examiners around the world and the scores are combined with the other required IB assignments in that subject. Subject scores range from 1-7. A diploma is then awarded to those students that have met the required conditions and core requirements and earn the required number of points (24). Colleges may grant credit for each course individually or in some cases grant “sophomore-standing” if the student’s scores are high enough on the Diploma. State of Colorado colleges are now mandated by law to grant a minimum of 24 credit hours to IB Diploma holders. Even if students fall short of the diploma points needed, they can still earn credits for individual subjects. This credit is not the main reason to participate in IB, but it is a wonderful benefit to IB graduates. The IB Middle Years Program Requirements The IB Middle Years Program (MYP) prepares students for the rigor of the college-level Diploma courses offered beginning junior year. Although school-wide Greeley West is considered an IB World School and all Spartans are encouraged to develop the characteristics of the IB Learner, our MYP classes are specifically focused on accelerating the academic rigor of the 9th and 10th grade curriculums so that all MYP students will be prepared for the requirements of the Diploma Program and its assessments. In addition to the six areas addressed in the Diploma Program that were listed earlier, MYP has the additional required components of Technology and Physical Education, bring the total number of curricular components to eight. All of the subject areas are assessed using the MYP criteria for that subject, and there are required assessments that are internally scored and externally monitored/moderated to ensure that we are adhering to all specifications and goals of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. These assessments and the MYP Personal Project are started during the freshmen year, but the actual completion and moderation phase occurs during the sophomore year.

STEM Magnet Program

The mission of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Magnet Program at Northridge High School is to provide a relevant and authentic STEM learning experience to create problem-solvers and life-long learners who possess the knowledge and tools to succeed. The Northridge High School Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program began in 2006 with the belief that all students, regardless of their lifelong goals, would benefit from the critical thinking skills inherent to a STEM program. It is a goal of Northridge High school that through this magnet program all of its graduates will have a plan for their future by preparing themselves to become productive members of society. Some students may choose a certificate program; some may want to work towards an associate degree, whereas others will want to pursue a four year degree at a university. Regardless of the path chosen by our students, they will have benefitted by the increased opportunities afforded by the Northridge STEM magnet program. STEM Magnet Endorsement Program The STEM Program at Northridge High School is designed to attract students who have a strong aptitude for science, math, and technology. The program offers an accelerated and advanced integrated curriculum in science, math, and technology. Students will also be able to take full advantage of Northridge’s wide variety of traditional high school offerings, advanced placement, and honors courses, as well as extra-curricular activities such as athletics, student clubs, the school's bands, and theater. Electives offered by other departments are encouraged. In addition, the students will complete a capstone project before graduation integrating their math, science, and technology skills

Eligibility In order to apply, students must be eligible to attend Northridge High School and have completed or be in the process of completing Geometry prior to admittance into the program. In order to increase the number of students who are able to access and complete the endorsement program, Northridge offers a special summer school Geometry class for incoming 9th graders or NHS students prior to their freshmen year. Magnet Endorsement Requirements Classes will be chosen from the following list:

Math Science Technology Geometry Cellular/Organismal Biology Computer Programming I & II (1 sem) Algebra II Chemistry of Matter/Reaction Video Game Design (1 sem) College Alg. Early College Programs

The State of Colorado provides several options for high school students who meet high school standards to begin college early. The purpose of these options include promoting content standards, providing academic challenges, and providing access to academic courses that may not be available at the high school to meet high school graduation requirements.

Concurrent Enrollment Program

Concurrent Enrollment offers juniors and seniors the opportunity to take up to six (6) credit hours per semester at Colorado public institutions of higher education. Students under 21 years of age, who demonstrate academic preparedness, are eligible for concurrent enrollment programs. Students enrolled in 12th grade at a school district may enroll in remedial courses, if approved by the school district. If a high school student is retained for instructional purposes in 12th grade, they may not enroll in more than 9 credits concurrently during the repeat year. To enroll at an eligible post-secondary institution a student must have completed the minimum course prerequisites and all required assessments. Students can apply to take courses not offered at the high school they are currently attending. College courses that have an equivalent at the high school do not qualify for Concurrent Enrollment. For more information on Concurrent Enrollment contact your high school counselor.

ASCENT Program

Persons under twenty-one years of age, who have met all district’s graduation requirements, have competed 12 college credit hours and do not need remediation are eligible for this program. To enroll at an eligible post-secondary institution a student must have completed the minimum course prerequisites and all required assessments. For more information on the ASCENT Program, contact your high school counselor

NCAA Eligibility

NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse Many college athletic programs are regulated by the National College Athletic Association (NCAA), an organization founded in 1906 that has established rules on eligibility, recruiting, and financial aid. The NCAA has three membership divisions; Division I, Division II and Division III. If you are planning to enroll in college as a freshman and you wish to participate in Division I or Division II athletics, you must be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse.

To be certified by the clearinghouse, you must: 1. Graduate from high school

You should apply for certification before graduation if you are sure you wish to participate in athletics as a freshman at the college to which you will be admitted. The Clearinghouse will issue a preliminary certification report when you have had all your material submitted. After you graduate, if your eligibility information is requested by a member institution, the Clearinghouse will review your final transcript to make a final certification decision according to NCCA standards.

2. Earn a grade-point average of at least 2.00 (on a 4.00 scale) In a core curriculum of at least 16 academic courses which were successfully completed during grades 9-12. Only courses that satisfy the NCAA definition of a core course can be used to calculate your NCAA GPA. Although District 6 graduation requirements are the minimum, students who wish to participate as a Division athlete may need to adhere to the following requirements:

Core Units Required for NCAA Certification

Content Area Division I Division II English Core 4 years 3 years

Math Core (Algebra I or higher) 3 years 2 years

Science Core (Natural/Physical) 2 years 2 years

Social Science Core 2 years 2 years

Additional English, Math, or Natural/Physical Science 1 year 3 years

Additional Courses (from any area above, foreign language, or comparative religion/philosophy).

4 years 4 years

Total Core Units Required 16 16

3. Earn a sum of scores of at least 68 on the ACT or a combined score of at least 820 on the re-entered SAT (or 700 on the non re-entered SAT) on a national test date. For Division I: The minimum grade-point average in the 13 core courses and required ACT or SAT score vary according to the Initial-Eligibility Index below:

Pre-collegiate Requirements

Higher Education Admission Requirements

In 2003, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education adopted the Higher Education Admission Requirements. HEAR are entry requirements for students planning to attend any of Colorado’s public four-year colleges or universities. Private colleges and universities set their own admission standards, so students should contact those institutions directly for information regarding their enrollment policies. Additionally, public two-year colleges have open enrollment policies, meaning that students applying to these schools do not need to meet the following admissions requirements. Students planning to attend a four-year college or university in Colorado will need to complete the following classes in order to fulfill the Higher Education Admission Requirements. In addition to the Higher Education Admission Requirements, students must also meet the Admission Eligibility Index. Meeting the Higher Education Admissions Requirements does not guarantee admission to a four-year public institution. Colleges and universities may have additional requirements.
