Jon LewisMNU Pioneers32-5NAIA Division 1 National Champions

Jon Lewis, who’s 141-28 (.834) career record is best all time at MNU, capped his 5th season with the program’s first National Champion-ship. The 2-time conference Coach of the Year was named NAIA National Coach of the Year after the run to the title.

Jon Lewis became the head coach at MNU pri-or to the 2011-12 season and has transformed the Pioneers into a nationally ranked power-house.

Prior to being named head coach, Lewis spent the previous 5 seasons at MNU as the lead assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Bill Olin and Karen Lange. Under their tutelage, Jon proved to be a dynamic recruiter and student of the game. In addition to working with the Pioneers, Lewis has been instrumental in developing many NCAA DI, DII, and NAIA stu-dent-athletics while co-founding the KC Hoops Factory program and most recently helping build one of the Kansas City’s top girls club basketball programs, Eclipse, an elite non-for-profit AAU program with over 25 teams. While traveling across the country coaching summer teams, Lewis has been able to evaluate and recruit some of the nation’s best prospects. During his playing years with the MNU men’s basketball team, Jon was a part of multiple conference championships and four national tournament teams. The knowledge gained from working with MNU men’s basketball coach, Rocky Lamar, has been invaluable to Jon’s coach-ing experience. As part of the MNU coaching staff, the Pioneers have had the best seasons in women’s basketball history.

Jon has coached in 7 national tournaments, winning the National Championship in 2016. He has helped recruit and coach 2 Conference Freshmen of the Year, 4 Conference Players of the Year, 14 All-Conference selections, 8 NAIA All-America performers and numerous NAIA-Dak-tronics Scholar-Athletes.

Jon and his wife, Brandi, have two children and live in Olathe.

KBCA Women’s Four Year College Coach of the Year

Kansas Basketball Coaches Association30

In 2006, after an assistant coaching career that took him to Union College (Kent.) and East Central University (Okla.), Micah Ratzlaff returned to his alma mater at Tabor College as an assistant men’s basketball coach. One year later, he took over as the Bluejay head coach.

In his nine seasons at the helm, Tabor has the best record in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference over that time at 107-57. In the past three years the Bluejays have won two regular season KCAC and two conference tournament titles going 45-11 in league play.

The 2015-2016 season proved to be historic for Tabor as the Bluejays went 20-0 in conference play, won the KCAC tournament, and earned their third consecutive berth to the NAIA national tournament. Tabor won a school record 30 games as Ratzlaff was named KCAC Coach of the Year for the second straight year.

Ratzlaff received a B.A. from Tabor in physical education in 2003 after transferring from Oral Roberts University where he played for two years. At Tabor he was a 1st team All-Conference player as well as an All-American honorable mention award winner in both 2001 and 2003. He earned his Master’s degree in physical education from Union College in Kentucky in 2005.

He is married to Amanda and they are the parents of two sons, Brekyn and Zavior, and two daughters, Kingzley and Jetta.

KBCA MEDIA AWARD—2016

Council Grove Republican

Bob Collins Craig McNeal When the Council Grove Republican published its first edition on Aug. 24, 1872, the early day sports reporting involved the results of horse racing on the two and one-half mile oval track in the city's Fairgrounds Park. Then came football when Council Grove High School fielded its first team in the fall of 1896. Through the years there has been coverage of the Council Grove Indians, a semi-pro baseball team, and its success in state and national tournaments; and more recently state appearances by the Council Grove High School softball and baseball teams, including state appearances in both sports this spring. But the most success by area schools in the newspaper's coverage area always has been basketball. There were Class BB state tournament championships for Wilsey High School and back-to-back titles by Dwight High School, all in Dodge City. In more recent seasons, Craig McNeal, owner/editor, and Bob Collins, photographer, have made multiple state tournament trips to Hays to cover White City High School and Hutchinson when Council Grove High School girls and boys teams made it to state. Craig McNeal -- During his more than 50 years at the Council Grove Republican, first as a general reporter and sports editor, and the past 30 plus years as owner/editor, he has written more than 10,000 stories on Council Grove and area high school and junior high basketball, football, volleyball, wrestling, baseball, soft-ball, cross country, track and golf teams. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and did graduate work in journalism, both at Kansas State University. Bob Collins -- He was a teacher and coach for 11 years at Council Grove High School, and the past 36 years has been a financial advisor for Waddell & Reed Financial Services. He received a bachelor of science de-gree in American history with a minor in business at Sterling College, and a master of science degree in American history at Emporia State University. His interest in photography has allowed him to shoot the vari-ous sports at Council Grove and area high schools, in addition to general news 'photographs for the Council Grove Republican. Dave Henry Jackson Heights High School

Dave Henry was raised on a farm near Seneca, KS. After graduating from St. Peter and Paul High School in Seneca, he attended St. Marys of the Plains College in Dodge City where he played football for 4 years and graduated in 1969 with his teaching degree. Dave's first teaching and coaching job took him back to his alma mater, St. Peter and Paul. After only one year there he left in 1970 to accepted a job at Jackson Heights as the P.E. teacher, head football, and head boys track coach. He remained the head football and boys track coach through 1994. Several of his football teams earned playoff bids and the Cobras finished 2nd in the State on two occasions; in 1971 and 1983. Dave's teams always played hard, they were always fundamentally sound and were always respected by opposing coaches. He signed on to be an assistant football coach from 1996 until 2006 and also served as the Athletic Director for Jackson Heights from 1997 until 2007. Dave also served as an assistant basketball coach off and on throughout his career at Jackson Heights, including when the Lady Cobras won the Class 1-A State Basketball Tournament and the Grand State Championship in 1976. These were not the only contributions Dave Henry made to Jackson Heights. After Dave retired from teaching in 2007, he took on a school bus route from 2007 until he finally retired in the fall of 2015. From 1994 through the fall of 2015, Dave took great pride in caring for the school grounds and football field, which is now named "Dave Henry Football Field." His passion for the school was evident in the beautiful field and how he cared for the flowers that he planted. His wife Mary and he will celebrate 50 years of marriage this year. They have three daughters (all married to one of Dave's former football players), 7 grandchildren, and one great grandchild, all of whom are his pride and joy. For the past six years, Dave has been battling cancer, but always has a positive attitude. The same attitude that he displayed as a coach, a teacher, and a mentor to everyone that crossed his path. Dave would tell you it is the Cobra Way of doing things!

Wichita Collegiate High School

As I look back on my life to this point, one significant event sticks out in my mind the most; my father’s difficult battle with colon cancer. My father was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2003 when I was starting kindergarten at Wichita Collegiate School. I had no idea, at that time, how much my father’s diagnosis would shape my life. His courage and perseverance showed me that one has to continue living life to the fullest, even when the odds are stacked against you. I started playing the game of basketball when I was five years old. My father, who played for Wichita State University, had a love for the game and passed that passion on to me. When my father was first diagnosed with cancer, I was only five, just starting to play basketball. At that time, as one can imagine, I was unaware of the significance of the battle my father was about to face for the next thirteen years. Following his diagnosis, he underwent a critical surgery to remove a tumor from his colon. The surgery went well; however, he still had to receive chemotherapy treatment for the next eight months in hopes there would not be a reoccurrence of his cancer. At the end of his treatments, he appeared to be cancer free. Even during the stress of his chemotherapy, my father still became my first basketball coach and started to instill the love of basketball in me. Over the next couple of years, life continued to go on as normal for our family. Along with being busy with work and family, my father found time to continue coaching me and my friends in both basketball and baseball. I knew, even at that young age, I was fortunate to still have my father and his support in my life. Two years later in December of 2005, our family’s life once again was confronted with the struggle of cancer. My father started having headaches, and it was soon determined that he was not cancer free. In fact, his colon cancer had spread to his lungs and a portion of his brain. However, once again my dad refused to let cancer run his life. His surgeon wanted him to immediately undergo brain surgery, but my father was more worried about putting me first by making sure I would be able to

From there, the family moved to Kansas City while his Father attended Medical School at the University of Kansas and then onto Winfield, Kansas where Chris was raised. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1972 and from the University of Kansas in 1976. Chris married Jane Liermann Kaufman in 1977. Together they had three children, John, Caroline, and Alexandria. Chris and Jane resided in Winfield where he owned Kaufman Sporting Goods with his brother David. After the brothers sold the store, Chris worked as a corrections counselor for the Winfield Correctional Facility for 30 years. Chris spent all his free time with his wife and children. John followed right behind his every step. They would hunt and fish together, referee games together, and they would work endlessly at our family ranch together. The girls, Caroline and Alex, had an obligation to be tom boys, as they too, followed right along with hunting and fishing, camping, hiking, all the things Chris had a passion for. He and Jane loved their dogs and walking at the ranch together. Chris and Jane spent countless weekends traveling with the kids to Lawrence for KU sporting events and traveling to the mountains for their annual summer vacations.Chris was an accomplished football, basketball, and baseball official for 40 years. In 2002 he was named the league commissioner for the South Central Border League and he served as the area supervisor for the State of Kansas in football, basketball, and baseball for many years. In his 40 years of officiating heworked 23 state championship games in football, 24 state championship games in basketball, and 32 state championship games in baseball. He will be remembered for many things including his passion for life and the love for his family, but especially for his dedication to the student athletes and to the officiating community. Chris had a presence on and off the court that permeated his positive attitude through thefans, the coaches, and the players. Chris refereed every game, no matter what level it was, with all hisheart. It was certainly important to Chris to display a level of professional and sportsman like conduct toeach individual he encountered during the event. Chris encouraged athletes, mentored coaches, and lenta hand to any school administrator that needed one. In the late 1970’s Chris’s parents bought their family ranch 15 miles East of Winfield. Chris spent many days and nights at the ranch hunting, fishing, doing chores with his brothers, and enjoying all the family time he could possibly could. Family was everything to Chris. Chris often reminded Jane, John, Caroline, and Alex to live every day to fullest, smile big, and be productive. Life is great he would say, even up untilhis last day. Chris never showed fear during his battle with brain cancer. Chris never pitied his situationor made others feel sorry for him. He was exceedingly appreciative for everyone’s love and dedication tohim during the last phase of his illness.Chris had a motto he lived by, family over everything. He will be deeply, deeply missed, but his legacy will never be forgotten.

JERRY GERBER

Garden Plain

Jerry Gerber started his coaching career at Garden Plain High School in 1966 as an assistant to Coach George Wendell. Two years later at Jerry and Elaine’s wedding, Coach Wendell announced that he had accepted the position as principal of Garden Plain High School and had offered Gerber the job as boys’ head basketball coach. After short consideration, Coach Gerber accepted his first head coaching position. For the next 16 years, Coach Gerber served as the boys’ head basketball coach for the Garden Plain Owls. In 1984, he spent 9 years at Southwestern Heights before returning to Garden Plain in 1993. There, he finished his successful career with the Varsity boys’ basketball team. His career stats totaled 606 wins and 260 losses which included 20 trips to the Kansas State Tournament resulting in 3 Championships, 2 Runner-Ups, 2 Third-Places, 1 Fourth-Place, and a strong 2nd Place finish in the Tournament of Champions at Dodge City in 1978. Coach Gerber had many great players, both on the court and in the classroom, with a supportive group of devoted parents. In 2007 after a short, two-year retirement, a former player from Southwestern Heights approached Coach Gerber and offered him an assistant coaching job at Northwest High School in Wichita for the girls’ basketball team. While teaching science at Northwest, Coach Gerber also helped coach at Maize High School until 2010 before moving to Cheney High School, where he served as a science teacher and assisted with girls’ basketball. Finally, in 2012, Coach Gerber determined that it was that time to give it all up and go Polka dancing with his beloved wife, Elaine. Jerry and Elaine have been married for nearly 48 years and are blessed with four children: Jan and Jaron, whom he was able to coach, and Jalayne and Janessa, whom he was fortunate to have watched play basketball, volleyball, and run track. They have six wonderful grandchildren with a seventh on the way, and still reside in Garden Plain, Kansas.
