It is often a fine line as to whether children are well enough to attend school. This will depend on the type of illness as well as how the child themselves is travelling. If students have a temperature, have been vomiting or have had diarrhoea, students should not return to school until at least 24 hours after the last expulsion or after their temperature drops back within the normal range. This is a very important timeline as it is very easy to pass these bugs onto others. Some diseases may also have exclusions from school such as measles, school sores, pertussis (whooping cough) and head lice amongst others and these have very specific exclusion periods from schools. Most coughs and colds can be managed in the classroom and parents can assist by teaching good hygiene in terms of sneezing and coughing away from others, washing hands after blowing noses etc. Although children that have coughs and colds should not always be kept home from school if they are present without a temperature, we also need to recognise that the child may not have their normal stamina and may need times of rest or a shortened day. If you have questions about absences due to illness please see your classroom teacher or contact the office. Even though our aim is zero absences sometimes it is best for the child and their peers for them to be at home. Tree Planting Today we had perfect weather for tree planting off the Old Eagle Point Road. Rooms 1, 2 & 6 did a wonderful job planting various native plants. Thank you to Tom Crook and Landcare for assisting. REMINDER: Rooms 3, 4, 5 & 7 will plant tomorrow. Please bring wet weather gear. Mother’s Day Stall On Friday 10th of May children will have the opportunity to purchase gifts for the important women in their lives. Gifts are $5 each thanks to the JSC. Absences If your child is unwell or unable to attend school, please remember parents need to contact the office before 9:00am on that day. We need to account for all children each day and notifying us when children are absent from school certainly makes our job easier. ‘Do It For Dolly’ Day On Friday 10th May our school will recognise ‘Do It For Dolly Day’ and join the Paint the Town Blue crew in recognising the importance of the message ‘Be Kind’. As our school already wears blue JSC have organised blue donuts for each of the children and a design a T-Shirt activity for display. The aim of the day is to spread the message to be kind to each other and accept difference as a wonderful thing. Although there will be no charge for the donuts on the day, if families would like to donate money to the cause we will be collecting and passing this onto Carly Knight from The Bairnsdale Horse Centre who has been a fantastic ambassador. NAPLAN Next week our Grade 3 and 5 students will have the opportunity to show us how well they are doing with their academic progress and will sit their NAPLAN assessments. NAPLAN is a standardised assessment which every child in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 participates in. We are always so proud of our students every year as they are so determined to do their very best. The results of NAPLAN are given both to parents and the school and we use this information in a variety of ways. The school analyses where our children do well and compare that to our teaching to check the effectiveness of our curriculum and teaching. We also look for areas that students did not answer confidently and plan to ensure we are exposing students to a wide variety of skills and content. We do not analyse individual results of performance but we do look at the growth shown by our Grade 5 students in comparison to their Grade 3 results. We are again checking the impact of our teaching over these 2 years. Thank you to all the Grade 3 and 5 students who will sit their NAPLAN next week, be proud of what you can achieve and strive to be the best you can be. ASPIRE Leadership Day All 14 of our school leaders were invited to attend the A.S.P.I.R.E leadership day on Wednesday the 8th of May. The program is aiming to increase children’s physical activity, through the exposure of a variety of sports alongside Olympic Athletes. We were fortunate enough to meet Steve Moneghetti,

(Four time Olympic marathon runner) Michelle Brogran (Bronze and silver medal basketballer), Monica Brennan (Olympic sprinter) just to name a few. Over 200 children attended from the region and I was extremely 10please how active, thoughtful and polite our leaders were on the day. A great example of why these children were chosen as our school leaders. Well done kids. Jane Langley
