Dear Friends, If your home is anything like ours, the Christmas wish lists have already started coming in and seem to be growing longer each day. “Dear Santa, I want…i-pad, i-touch, i-phone!” However, as a mother and grandmother, what I really want is for my children to somehow feel the joy and satisfaction that comes from giving. I want them to have a moment where they forget about their own wants and focus on someone else’s needs. So as this holiday season draws near, I invite you to consider this question: What do you want to have happen this Christmas season in your home and family? Education

Hope and change describe a new outlook for many in the village of Vila Mas-sane. One illustration is 42-year-old Mariana Nazare, the mother of six children, whose ages range broadly from three to twenty-five years old. This illiterate mother was unable to write her own name.

Care for Life helped Mariana to set a goal and attend an adult literacy class. She worked diligently and earned the equivalent of a third grade education and is thrilled to demonstrate her ability to write her own name. Undoubtedly, Care for Life changed her life completely. Mariana is now able to sign documents for her children to attend school and is able to read perscriptions for her sick children - something she was unable to do before.

Health & HygieneJacinto Pedro Manuel and his wife, Fania Andreson, remember the conditions before Care for Life was introduced in Nhamatanda. The village was filthy and hygiene was incredibly poor. Garbage and human excrement invited flies; contaminated water was a haven to mosquitoes and a birthplace for parasites. This water was still used to bathe, wash clothes or dishes, and even to drink. Consequently, the people suffered tremendously with illnesses and many died from malaria and dehydration caused by cholera. Jacinto remembers many times when he was deeply concerned for the life of his six children as they took weekly trips to the hospital because one was always sick.

Jacinto reports that in the first three months after the arrival of Care for Life, there was an obvious decrease in the number of illnesses.

He states: “Care for Life could have come in and just given people bricks for latrines, or food to eat, but what they brought was much more valuable—they gave us ideas.”

He started to burn his own bricks — enough to build a latrine and an attached washroom.

Food Security & Nutrition

Siblings Celeste (13) and Augusto (16), have strong incen-tives to stop the HIV/AIDS cycle in their family. Their father and two of their half-brothers died from AIDS.

Care for Life has made their life better by teaching them about prevention and how to live a better and healthier life, as good nutrition is vital in combating AIDS. Their first goal was to improve their food

source and so their most notable achievement is their family garden. Last year year they produced tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and kale.

Psycho-Social Well-Being

Care for Life also teaches the importance of family relations.

Zeria Fernando in the community of Mungassa shares:

Care for Life taught us that a married man should not hit his wife, but rather respect her as she respects him. And this was important for my husband to hear because up until now the situation in our home was really bad. My husband Carlito drank a lot and as a consequence was violent. But then Care for Life came and asked him whether he was smoking and/or drinking. I could not believe he admitted to doing both. And so Care for Life started to teach and work with him personally to overcome his vices. After a few month Carlito was able to give up both smoking and drinking. We are very happy now in our home. VERY happy.

Sanitation

Zinha Adjuita and Diolinda Elias, two mothers, understand the overwhelming dif-ficulty of keeping a large family clean and healthy without ready access to water. Water not just for drinking, but for cooking, bathing, washing the family’s clothes and dishes, and watering the family garden.

Hauling their large yellow plastic containers to a well, they made many trips each day carrying the 42 lbs of water on their heads. This process of getting water to their homes required two hours a day.

They recognized the need for their own wells and tried to make them, but they lacked the knowledge to succeed. When the rainy season came, their wells al-ways collapsed and quickly became a symbol of hopelessness for the villagers.

Care for Life came and taught them how to build strong, lasting wells. Zinha and Diolinda, as well as many other village members, immediately started to build their own wells. Now Diolinda and Zinha can walk to their well in less than a minute, and their water is free.

Income GenerationCare for Life helped Parmanteiro Alfinete realize that the greatest part of creating and enjoying personal prosperity is the ability to share it with others. As the leader of the Credit Savings Association in the community of Bispo 1, Parman-teiro actively teaches others in his village to help and serve each other.

Together, members of the association walked over an hour to collect grass and stakes to create the walls and roof of a new home for a widow and her four young children. In another instance, they filled 32 plastic bags to capacity with kale, peppers, and other produce to distribute to those in the greatest need.

The Credit Savings Association was formed to create collective savings and to make microcredit loans to group members. Through Parmenteiro’s leadership, members are not only increasing their standards of living, but also their aware-ness and sensitivity to the needs of those around them. For the first time, they feel they have the knowledge and resources to not only care for themselves, but to make a difference in the lives of others.

Home Improvement

Few years ago 31 year-old Gil Nherere lived in a dilapidated hut, which he worked to improve. Unfortunately, when the heavy raining season started, his hut and all his hopes and motivation washed away.

The materials to rebuild his home didn’t exist in his surrounding area, so he walked all day to find enough grass, wood, and bamboo to build a suitable shelter. He dreamt that someday he would have enough money and resources to build a stronger house.

With the arrival of Care for Life Gil says he didn’t have to wait for someday. He could now set goals, plan and take action to improve his home with the rewards earned from setting goals. As a result of the principles that he learned, he imme-diately set out to put in motion his dream of having a home he could be proud of.

Gil is mudding the walls of his new home on the inside while he has already added a porch. He created a sitting area with benches and constructed a fence that finishes the feeling of a well-cared for property and home.

Community Participation

Joana Cachote understands the big picture and purpose of what Care for Life teaches – that we are in fact, our brother’s keeper and we have a responsibility to know the needs of our neighbors. This truth and Joana’s desire to magnify her role as a community leader literally saved the life of Mr. Mario Cubuanda. One day Joana found the 49 year old man alone, filthy, lying on his floor mat, under-weight and with his hands and feet almost entirely consumed by “mataquenha” worms.

Under normal circumstances Mr. Cubuanda would have died, but because Care for Life teaches community members to look after each other Joanna recog-nized the urgency of his situation. She immediately set in motion the necessary events to get Mr. Cubuanda the medical attention he needed.

Mr. Cubuanda now feels a responsibility to serve and look out for his neighbors and is grateful for neighbors like Joana that looked out for him.
