Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth…
Psalms 66:1
I am fairly certain that somewhere in my family
tree there lurks a thespian, or perhaps even an actor. This, some would say, overly dramatic persona is certain to come out when I encounter our granddaughters. The stage for our drama is set when, what with me being
me, I commence to harass and harangue them without mercy—as I should. One would think what with my advanced age I would know better, but well, I guess I don’t for surely once harassment has commenced, they respond with a disproportionate show of force. Not to be
outdone I am compelled to break out the dramatic that lurks within and bellow in
my best Daffy Duck, “WHY YOU AARDARK RADNIKS! YOU SHAN’T GET AWAY WITH THIS!! NO, YOU SHAN’T!!”
Sadly, for me they do get away with it by combining their evil genius at my expense. I am shocked, shocked I tell you, they should treat me, the pillar of truth, justice, and the grandfatherly way of life in such a low manner. How this came to pass I do
not understand, yet there it is. As I beat my hasty retreat, I announce for all to hear, “I shake my fist at you! I’ll be back and then you’ll pay! Oh, my yes, you certainly shall!” You can only imagine my dismay when these blonds ne’er do wells laugh with great enthusiasm at my expense. Sadly, if I protest too much, I run the risk of at least two granddaughters jumping all over me and taking fiendish delight in doing so. I don’t know, somehow it wasn’t supposed to be like this, but there you have it. I
am repeatedly done in four and six-year olds. To quote: The Wicked Witch of the
West, “What a world, what a world, what a world.”
Upon occasion I have tried to enlist my beloved to my cause and make a fine case for a mutual defense pact. Sadly, it is to no avail as she sides with them. It pains me to report my beloved through either some secret medical procedure or foul genetics has unreasonably sharp elbows and enjoys employing them to the absolute delight of my
adversaries. Such is my life. And thus, I am ultimately forced to beat a hasty retreat. Woe is upon me.

The truth of the matter is that I live for these moments when my granddaughters best their grandfather. In the midst of the hoots, hollers and declaratives memories are made. I would submit that child and grownup alike are living Psalm 66 which wonderfully begins, “Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth.” I would like to believe
as my hapless self-lays under the wiggling mass of contrarian laughter there is a joyful noise being made that surely reaches God’s ears. One wonders how it could be any other way.
I wish there were some way we could bottle the enthusiasm children have for life and give small doses to the countless grownups who imbibe all too much in seriousness. There are times I can’t help but wonder, is any place appropriate for making a joyful
noise anymore? Surely there has to be.
There is more than enough sadness in life to wrap around the world a hundred million times over. Yet there are also moments of pure ecstasy waiting in the twinkle of a four-year old’s eyes who is plotting as only
four-year olds can plot. Although perhaps hidden from plain view those moments do await in a multitude of forms.
For example, Nancy and I have some lilac brushes that grow alongside our house. They and the lace curtain in my little sanctuary help to create a unique view. Between the bushes and the curtains, I have been blessed to watch a micro ecosystem outside my window as birds aplenty come to feast in the feeders that
Nancy has put up for their benefit. When I look out the window, I see the lilacs and birds singing –natures joyful harmony.
I would submit there is an overlooked assignment awaiting us, especially these days, which is to look and listen for the joyful noise that is being made all about us. I know for myself the next time our granddaughters come to the house I will make a joyful noise with them, oh yes, I will, and then they will surely pay.
God bless all of you,
Pastor Mike

Sunnyslope Church - May
Welcome, Pastor Russ!
We are delighted that our new part-
time settled pastor, Russell (Russ)
Clark joined us for Zoom worship on
May 17.
He shared the Call to Worship and
participated in the service. We are so
pleased that he and his family have
arrived in the northwest!
While settling into a new home, Pastor
Russ has been “meeting” various
church members through Zoom and
phone chats, chatting with Pastor Mike
and becoming acquainted with our
office assistant, Janeal Himes-
Jacobson.
Pastor Russ will begin sharing fully in
worship in June, when we will begin
meeting (probably via Zoom) every
Sunday.
WELCOME! WELCOME! WELCOME!

Caring for Each Other
Galen Miller loves “visitors” during
this time of total stay-at-home orders.
Here is how it works: You can see each other and talk via phone from a distance.
Galen lives in Colonial Vista, just across
from Wenatchee Brethren Baptist Church (entryway is on Okanogan).
Call his landline at 663-2899.
Be patient for him to answer as he
moves slowly and takes out his hearing aid.
Speak slowly and clearly and reasonably
loudly, asking him to go onto his balcony for a “chat” (keep your phone on).
Galen's balcony is on the third floor around to the right of the Colonial Vista front door.

Fundraiser
Helping Our Wenatchee Immigrant Community
As of Monday, 5/18
Thanks to the generosity of people from different parts of the country, all walks of life,
and different financial situations, we have collected over $24,000 through GoFundMe and
checks written to Sunnyslope Church. One hundred percent (100%) of the money we
receive goes to helping our immigrant community members who are struggling during
this time of crisis. So far, we have provided assistance to 124 individuals and families in
need, and more referrals keep coming in.
Thank you so much to all who have joined in our efforts to provide some relief.
Each and every one of you has made a difference, and we would ask you to
encourage your friends, family members, and neighbors to join in our efforts - no
contribution is too big or too small.
And thanks to for serving as the fiscal agent for
Wenatchee for Immigrant Justice. Without this service the work could not be done.
I am proud to be a part of this great congregation that walks our talk.
